Big Life Chapter 191-200

Chapter 191. The Bombing Starts (12)

— Your place? What’s wrong?

“Uh, I’ve got a few places to go to,” Park Do-Joon replied in a hurry.

Woo Tae-Bong kept silent, knowing what Park Do-Joon was referring to instinctively.

“Hyung? Are you listening?”

— Where do you actually want to go? ICU Entertainment? Then to MBS Broadcasting Station and Samseong-dong?

With every question Woo Tae-Bong threw, his tone grew more intense. Park Do-Joon was rendered speechless for a while and furrowed his brows.

— I think this is you being nosy, Park Do-Joon.

“But hyung, this is related to Jae-Gun. I can’t just stand by and do nothing, not when my friend experienced something like that.”

— Sure, I understand. But what are you planning to do? Is there even anything you can do to help?

“I’ll make her apologize, of course. And also acknowledge her wrongdoings publicly.”

Woo Tae-Bong’s ridiculous chuckle tickled Park Do-Joon’s ears.

— Do you think Bo-Ra would listen to you? And there’s no evidence at all, Do-Joon. It’s not something you can resolve by stepping up. She’s a venomous one, and I’ve told you many times not to provoke her.

“…!”

— Please, Do-Joon. Listen to me if you understand where I’m coming from.

Park Do-Joon rubbed his temples. Woo Tae-Bong had always been his suppressor. As always, Woo Tae-Bong was right about everything. Park Do-Joon couldn’t refute at all.

After a while of contemplation, Park Do-Joon said, “I’m sorry, hyung.”

— What does that mean? What are you sorry for?

“I’m sorry for getting ahead of myself. I’ll have a can of beer and sleep afterward.”

A long sigh of relief came from Woo Tae-Bong.

— Good. You’re feeling lonely, right? Let me buy you some snacks.

“Don’t. I’ve already opened a can of beer. I’ll be sleeping in thirty minutes.”

— All right. Let’s not create any trouble and look ahead. Keep going on a roll, got it?

“Yes, yes, I hear you. You should rest, hyung.”

Park Do-Joon hung up the call and then immediately changed into another set of clothes and stepped out of his house. He felt sorry for Woo Tae-Bong, but he couldn’t just ignore the news he had received today.

***

“I’ll leave it in your hands then, manager. Please add on a charge on fallacy and a maximum fine of ten million won.”

“Don’t worry, we specialize in such cases, after all. I’ll be taking my leave then.”

“Yes, please be safe on the way back.”

The manager from the lawyer’s office left.

Bo-Ra’s grimace disappeared, and she plopped down on the sofa. Her manager was busy on a call with the CEO of their agency while Yu-Na was cleaning up the broken pieces of the shattered plate in the kitchen.

“We’ve set a date for the press conference,” her manager said as he sat down across from Bo-Ra after ending the call.

“Come to the office in the evening to meet the CEO later. He instructed you to stay at home aside from the times when you have to work.”

“Why should I? I didn’t do anything wrong.” Bo-Ra shot back with a glare.

Her manager was rendered speechless but soon laughed self-mockingly.

“You still want to do this in front of me?”

“Oppa, are you hearing yourself? You’re also suspecting that I instructed her to do it, right?”

“Forget it, forget it… Anyway, this is a crucial period. Your career can go downhill in an instant.”

“…Hmpf.”

Bzzt! Bzzt! Bzzt!

Bo-Ra picked up her phone. If it were before, she would have answered the call from Park Do-Joon cheerfully. However, the situation was entirely different now. There was no way she couldn’t tell why he had called at this time unless she were a fool.

“Who is it? Why aren’t you answering?”

“Don’t be nosy.”

The vibration stopped but soon resumed ringing again. Bo-Ra hesitated for a while before walking to the terrace to answer the call. She did not say anything after answering, and Park Do-Joon’s harsh voice was soon heard.

— Where are you now?

“I’m at home.”

— That’s great. I’m in the area. There’s a cafe on the third floor of the building that you’re living in. Come and have a cup of coffee with me.

“Why out of the blue? You haven’t been answering when I called you these days.”

— …Stop playing dumb and meet in person. I’m going to wait for ten minutes there. If you don’t come, I’m going to head up.

Park Do-Joon then ended the call.

Bo-Ra took out her fringe roller as she let out a sigh.

“Where are you going?”

“The convenience store downstairs. I’ll be back soon.”

Bo-Ra took the elevator and pressed the button to the third floor. As it went down, her phone rang again. Bo-Ra took out her phone and looked at it with an annoyed look.

However, she quickly organized what she wanted to say in her mind and answered the phone.

“Oh my, who is this? Isn’t this Writer Won Ji-Yeon?”

— I-I’m sorry, unni. It’s all my fault. I was so desperate that I lost my mind.

Bo-Ra suppressed her laughter that was threatening to burst and continued. “There’s no way. My lawyer must have already contacted you. You shouldn’t be saying this to me, Writer Won Ji-Yeon; it’s already too late.

“Are you still holding a grudge against me over that incident when I accidentally poured water on you? I apologized to you many times, but that was already water under the bridge. Were you still holding a grudge against me?”

Bo-Ra couldn’t speak her mind with the suspicions that Won Ji-Yeon might be recording their phone conversation. Just then, she arrived at the third floor, and the elevator doors opened.

— P-please forgive me this once. Unni, I don’t even have 100,000 won to my name now, and it’s too difficult for me to live. I might even do something drastic! Sob sob…!

Won Ji-Yeon’s sniffles resounded in Bo-Ra’s ears.

Bo-Ra was full of vigor as she walked down the corridor. In some ways, she thought of Won Ji-Yeon as someone in a worse state than herself.

“It’s none of my business. I’ll be hanging up since I’m busy; I have to prepare for the press conference, too. I wish you all the best.”

— U-unni! Bo-Ra un—

Beep!

Bo-Ra hung up dispassionately. She soon arrived at the cafe. Stepping in, she spotted Park Do-Joon sitting in a corner far from the window. A few customers around stared at Bo-Ra the moment she appeared.

“This is going to draw people’s attention,” Bo-Ra said.

“It’s better to meet in public locations if you don’t want rumors spreading around. Not the truth, but real rumors,” Park Do-Joon stressed.

Bo-Ra chuckled coldly and sat down opposite Park Do-Joon.

“I’m quite busy today, I don’t have time for coffee. Make it quick.”

“Apologize publicly.”

“Me? To whom?”

“Didn’t I say not to play dumb? Do I have to mention names here?”

Bo-Ra shrugged with her palms facing up.

Ahh, you’re talking about the rumors on the internet? So you’re here because of that.”

“I see that your acting has improved. Why can’t you act like this in front of the camera?” Park Do-Joon narrowed his eyes.

Bo-Ra’s face flushed in that instance, but she soon composed herself and smiled calmly. “Regardless, there’s nothing for me to apologize for. That assistant writer is probably trying to get back at me after I scolded her before. I scolded her for not doing her job well, and now she’s getting back at me for it. How shallow.”

Bo-Ra reached out and grabbed Park Do-Joon’s iced coffee. Taking a sip from the straw, she added softly, “And Oppa, I’ve got a question for you. Are you really free to the point that you’re willing to step up over something like this?”

“Chae Bo-Ra…!”

“Where did you go? Our agency and the broadcasting station? What did you find out there?”

Park Do-Joon was almost on the verge of banging his fist on the table. Before he could explode, Bo-Ra sent him a final wave.

“If you’re so free, why don’t you take care of your girl group girlfriend instead?”

“…?!” Park Do-Joon drew in an astonished breath.

Bo-Ra covered her mouth in amusement as she watched Park Do-Joon’s face change. “Did you think I wouldn’t know? Well, too many dating rumors wouldn’t do much harm to such a popular actor like you, and you’re not the type to be concerned over such things as well.

“Do you really think that it’ll be the same for a girl group member? I’m talking about that girl group A; aren’t they in a crucial period at the moment?”

“You… where did you hear that nonsense?”

“Oh, so it’s nonsense when the topic is you? Let’s stop this, alright?” Bo-Ra smiled, looking at ease.

Park Do-Joon couldn’t calm himself down as he seethed in anger.

“I can go back now, right? See you next time, Oppa.”

Park Do-Joon could only watch Bo-Ra as she left the cafe scot-free.

Park Do-Joon felt like he had gotten stabbed in the back.

Just then, a few customers approached Park Do-Joon and asked, “I’m your fan. Can you please sign…”

“That was Bo-Ra unni, right? She looks quite cheerful, I guess the news on the internet was just a rumor.”

Park Do-Joon couldn’t reply to any of their questions and took the pen from the customer. However, his hands were trembling like a person with seizures, rendering him unable to write even a single word.

***

“You’re leaving it all to me?”

“Yes, just let me check the script at the end for once,” Ha Jae-Gun said.

He was talking about the drama production for Summer in My 20s, which was assigned to Lee Eun-Ha.

“Can I really do that?”

“Your scenario was good. Plus you liking my work is the icing on top. I can feel relieved and leave it in your hands.”

They were currently at the restaurant in the arcade near the Bucheon office. There were only the two of them since they were discussing the drama.

“Let’s dig in now.”

Ha Jae-Gun took the ladle and handed a bowl of the stew to Lee Eun-Ha.

Lee Eun-Ha accepted the bowl, still in a daze.

“I never thought a day like that would come in my life…” Lee Eun-Ha mumbled as she looked down at the bowl.

“Everything is going well for me ever since I met you, Writer Ha. Do you know why my face is always red? I always pinch myself on the cheeks over a dozen times a day just to check if I was dreaming.”

“Stop it and have some food.”

The lady boss of the restaurant began changing channels on the TV hanging on the wall. As the scene of Bo-Ra’s press conference appeared on the news, she put down the remote control. Unlike the lady boss, who was watching the news with much interest, Lee Eun-Ha was feeling quite nervous.

“Writer Ha, why don’t we finish this quickly and ask Tae-Sung out to join us for some drinks somewhere else?”

“Director Yoon should be busy.”

“How busy can he be? He’ll definitely come out if I call him. Tonight will be on me in celebration of the drama.” Lee Eun-Ha raised her voice, conscious about the TV.

Ha Jae-Gun smiled wryly at Lee Eun-Ha, “Thank you for being so considerate, Director Lee.”

“…”

“But I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

“Al; right…”

The two of them finished their meal and paid the bill. Then, they walked on the streets at night. They each had an ice cream stick for dessert and shared small talk as they headed back to the office.

Just as they were about to arrive at the building, unexpected guests showed up at the entrance. There was a hoard of reporters from various broadcasting stations and magazines. They recognized Ha Jae-Gun and ran up to him.

“Mr. Ha Jae-Gun, have you seen the news? Please tell us what you feel about that.”

“Is that all true? Did the incident really happen?”

“Have you heard from Ms. Won Ji-Yeon?”

Ha Jae-Gun blocked Lee Eun-Ha from the gathering reporters and silently pushed through the crowd. It wasn’t that he didn’t have any comments, but he didn’t want to turn this into a dirty fight and make his family and friends worry about him.

On top of that, there were only speculations, and there wasn’t any actual evidence.

“I’m sorry, it’s all because of me.” Ha Jae-Gun apologized after they finally escaped from the hoard of reporters as they stepped into the building.

Lee Eun-Ha smiled bitterly and replied, “It’s fine. Thanks to you, I actually find it quite new and fun to get attention in this way.”

Both of them then took the elevator and headed up to the office.

As they arrived on the 17th floor, Ha Jae-Gun was able to see another group of people gathering outside their door. They were the writers from the office.

“Enough; please leave before Ha Jae-Gun hyung comes back. Why are you even asking for forgiveness now?” The reproachful voice came from Lee Yeon-Woo.

Ha Jae-Gun and Lee Eun-Ha hurried over. The other writers were flustered as they saw him return.

“J-Jae-Gun hyung…”

The writers took a step back, revealing a familiar-looking lady whose head was drooping and her hands gathered in front of her out of nervousness and fear.

Chapter 192. The Bombing Starts (13)

“…Everyone, please go back in.”

Ha Jae-Gun watched the writers go back into the office with an expressionless face.

Won Ji-Yeon cut a sorry figure as she stood there alone.

“Writers should be in the office writing novels. Please return.” Ha Jae-Gun entered the password and grabbed the door knob.

Just before Ha Jae-Gun crossed the door, Won Ji-Yeon went down on her knees behind him and exclaimed, “P-Please forgive me, Mr. Ha…!”

“Are all of you not going to come in? I’m going to close the door now.”

Ha Jae-Gun was treating Won Ji-Yeon as if she were invisible.

Won Ji-Yeon still continued begging Ha Jae-Gun, rubbing her palms together. “I was out of my mind; living has become too hard on me that I made a grave mistake. I’m sorry, I’m really sorry! It’s all my fault. Please, I beg of you, Mr. Ha…!”

Huge droplets of tears dropped from her eyes.

Jung So-Mi scrunched her nose as she stood amongst the other writers. Putting aside the crime Won Ji-Yeon had committed, Jung So-Mi felt pity for the woman who was kneeling there begging for forgiveness.

“I’ll do everything you ask. Please just forgive my foolishness for once. I’ll accept any punishment you give me. Sob…!” Won Ji-Yeon bowed, her forehead touching the ground while sobbing heavily.

Her sobs rang loudly through the corridor. A few neighbors who alighted from the elevator were curious about the sobbing and loitered around to watch.

“I’ve made it very clear that day,” Ha Jae-Gun mumbled as he took off his coat. He was slowly warming up. Thanks to his ability to keep his emotions in check, Ha Jae-Gun added, “I said I would wait until midnight that day, but you never contacted me.”

“I-I… I was too scared and horrified…! I spent the entire night thinking how I should best apologize…!” Won Ji-Yeon tried making up excuses that couldn’t even work on Ha Jae-Gun.

Ha Jae-Gun smiled coldly and cut her off, saying, “And I’m not the only one who can punish you, Ms. Won Ji-Yeon. You should already have made enemies everywhere, so I hope you will stay strong and get through this.”

Ha Jae-Gun finished his piece and walked into the office.

Won Ji-Yeon collapsed to the floor with a thud. There was no room for forgiveness.

Darkness filled her eyes in an instant.

“Let’s go in, too,” Kang Min-Ho said and urged the others back into the office.

Kang Min-Ho took one last look at Won Ji-Yeon before closing the door behind him.

“Miss, what’s wrong? Hmm?

“Why are you doing this here?”

Two middle-aged ladies approached Won Ji-Yeon and started asking her questions.

Won Ji-Yeon wiped off the tears on her face and stood up. She wobbled toward the elevator while the passers-by cast strange looks on her.

Where should I go…’ Won Ji-Yeon realized that she had nowhere to go as she pressed the button to the first floor.

Grabbing tightly onto her light wallet, she felt tears about to force out of her eyes.

This can’t do… I should try asking for advanced payment at least…

The money she had at the moment was not enough to pay for her meals, let alone the rent for her studio. After giving it much thought, Won Ji-Yeon took out her phone and dialed the number of a senior writer whom she knew with trembling fingers.

— Yeah, Ms. Won Ji-Yeon. I was about to give you a call, too.

Her senior said with vigor as soon as they answered the call.

Sounding suspicious, Won Ji-Yeon replied cautiously, “W-what is it?”

— Oh, you first. Why did you call?

“I uh… I’m quite tight these days, so I’m really sorry, but I was wondering if I could get advanced payment…?”

An unexpected laughter came through, then the senior writer said,

— Of course. Is 500,000 won enough?

“Y-Yes, I’d be extremely thankful if you could.” Won Ji-Yeon smiled warmly.

However, her smile immediately collapsed.

— I’ll transfer it to you in ten minutes. You don’t have to come to work tomorrow.

“…Pardon?”

— Don’t you understand Korean? I’m paying you more than enough, considering all the work you’ve done up until now. Since you’re in need of money, too, I should just take the chance too. Aren’t you thankful?

“S-senior, what are you s-saying…?” Won Ji-Yeon grabbed her phone tightly, trembling uncontrollably.

The elevator arrived on the ground floor and opened its doors. Notified of her dismissal, she had totally forgotten that she had to take the back door to avoid the group of reporters that had gathered out front.

— Do you know how much the producer and Writer Kim got reprimanded because of you? Wouldn’t it be unfair and wrong for Local Culture TV to lose Writer Ha Jae-Gun because of someone like you?

“S-senior…!”

— Fuck, don’t call me that!

Won Ji-Yeon’s leg buckled beneath her as she flinched in fear.

— Ah, seriously. I didn’t want to say such things to you since you’re a woman, but don’t live like that, okay? Even if you’ve become trash, at least be recyclable if you still think of yourself as a human. Don’t ever call me again!

Beep!

The call ended. Won Ji-Yeon stood dazed in the middle of the lobby, where countless people walked through. A few reporters snooping outside the entrance discovered her and pressed their camera shutters at her.

That fucker…!’ Park Do-Joon clenched his phone so tightly that it was at the point of breaking.

If he were at home and not at the pork rice soup restaurant, he would have thrown his phone at the wall. It had been almost ten years since he became an actor, but he was always learning the powers of media play.

“Madam, please give me another bottle of soju.”

He was currently in a shabby restaurant somewhere in Jongno. If it weren’t for Ha Jae-Gun’s recommendation, he wouldn’t have visited such a place in this life. It was cheap, and the food was delicious; the best part was that he didn’t need to be conscious of others while he was here.

“You punk, how can you be drinking in broad daylight even if you don’t have any work lined up?” Woo Tae-Bong sighed as he stepped into the restaurant and sat down across from Park Do-Joon.

Park Do-Joon didn’t even look at Woo Tae-Bong and filled his own glass with soju.

“Chae-Rin is very worried about you. You should at least give her a call.”

“I’ll be meeting her later in the evening anyway. Hyung, do you want some drinks?”

“Who’ll drive if I drink? Yimo, just give me a bottle of soda.” Tea-Bong filled his glass with soda and raised his glass.

Park Do-Joon clinked glasses with him and said casually before drinking, “Bo-Ra knows of my relationship with Chae-Rin.”

“…What?”

“I told her to apologize to Ha Jae-Gun, but she told me that instead. How did she know?” Park Do-Joon asked, then emptied his glass.

Woo Tae-Bong’s face turned serious, and the gears in his mind began running. After a while, he finally said, “Could it be Woo Jae-Hoon? You’ve been hanging out with him for so long before. He’s close to Cho Cheol-Won from See&Good, so he connected him with Bo-Ra from ICU Entertainment.”

“That’s quite possible.”

“Hey, Park Do-Joon, eat something while you drink.”

“I don’t have the appetite.” Park Do-Joon shook the empty bottle and ordered another bottle for himself.

Woo Tae-Bong took off his coat and loosened the tie around his neck. “I can’t stand this any longer. I’ll just call a substitute driver, then. Let me have a glass.”

“I’m sorry, hyung, for not listening to you.”

“Wow, the high and mighty Park Do-Joon knows to apologize as well? The world has changed indeed.”

With a bitter smile, Woo Tae-Bong continued. “I know how much you like Writer Ha, so it’s not strange that you’re angry. But you must know this—the most important person here isn’t him, but yourself.”

“I know.”

The TV hanging on the wall was showing news about Bo-Ra’s press conference. It showed Bo-Ra sniffling before the incessant camera flashes.

Park Do-Joon looked down with a disgusted look.

“That bitch is going to sweep away the best actress award this year.”

“Just forget about it, alright? That is how the world rolls.”

“I will. I just want to try one last thing.” Park Do-Joon raised his finger.

Woo Tae-Bong’s face turned white instantly. “One more thing? What kind of scary news is this?”

Bzzt!

Just then, Park Do-Joon’s phone rang. Woo Tae-Bong’s eyes widened in shock when he caught a glimpse of the name on the screen—Won Ji-Yeon.

Park Do-Joon calmly picked up the phone.

“Did you meet him?”

— I’m on the way over…

“Do your best. Don’t worry about the expenses. I’m warning you again, but if this goes to Ha Jae-Gun’s ears, I’m not going to let you off.”

— Yes, I will keep it in mind. Thank you a lot for giving me the opportunity.

“I’m adding this in case you’ll get mistaken, but I’m not doing this out of pity for you. It’s just because of this ridiculous situation you’re in.”

— I-I know… I’m sorry…

“If you are, then do well from now on.”

Park Do-Joon then hung up the call.

Woo Tae-Bong then asked with his hands on the table, “What happened? Why did you contact that assistant writer?”

“I just introduced her to Oh & Jang Studio. I should do everything within my means to help.”

He hated Won Ji-Yeon as much as he hated Bo-Ra. From Park Do-Joon’s perspective, both ladies were the same kind of trash. He did not like it, but there was nothing else he could do about it.

“Does Writer Ha know about this?”

“Didn’t you hear the conversation just now? Of course, he doesn’t know. Don’t tell Ha Jae-Gun about this, hyung. He’s not going to like it once he finds out that I’m doing this because of him.”

“You really love your friend, eh?” Woo Tae-Bong said, sticking his tongue out.

Park Do-Joon chuckled and grabbed his phone again. The screen showed Let’s Watch A Movie.

***

“Nun-Sol, get down. Go play with Rika noona instead.” Jung So-Mi put down the pen that she was playing in her hand.

However, Nun-Sol stayed curled up on Jung So-Mi’s lap like a huge lump of snow. “My legs are cramping. Both you and Rika are taking turns sleeping on my lap, so I can’t stretch them. Quick.”

Meow.”

“Stop whining, you cutie. Do you really think that cuteness solves everything? Hmm?

Jung So-Mi couldn’t hold herself back and grabbed Nun-Sol, kissing him all over. The door to the bathroom opened behind Jung So-Mi, and Ha Jae-Gun walked out of the bathroom.

“You really like Nun-Sol.”

Ah, I…! Nun-Sol is just too cute…!”

Jung So-Mi turned red with embarrassment and put Nun-Sol down. She looked down and headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

“I’ll make us breakfast.”

“You don’t have to. You have early appointments today, so please rest.”

“It’s not hard to cook rice. Please give it to me.”

Ah.” Ha Jae-Gun snatched the rice cooker bowl from Jung So-Mi and poured raw rice into it. Jung So-Mi prepared soybean stew beside him and muttered, “You’re finally expanding into Hollywood.”

“I’ll have to meet them to hold discussions first.” Ha Jae-Gun smiled.

The people he was scheduled to meet today were the licensing in-charge from Paramountain and agent Chae Yoo-Jin. They had flown over to Korea for the licensing rights for Gyeoja Bathhouse.

Of course, the huge news had spread all over the internet. Of course, Oh Myung-Suk would accompany Ha Jae-Gun to the meeting.

“You’ve been busy working on your novels; you must be all over the place.”

“Not really. Once the licensing or copyrights are sold, that’d be the end of it, so there’s nothing much for me to do either. Even the scenario for Summer in My 20s has been taken over by Director Lee. Right now, I just have to complete the final volume for Oscar’s Dungeon.”

The two of them collaborated and quickly finished preparing their breakfast. While the stew was boiling, they prepared egg rolls, seasoned vegetables, braised mackerel, and cucumber kimchi.

“Shall we start waking the others up?”

“Let’s dig in first. They should still be tired after writing the entire night.”

Ha Jae-Gun and Jung So-Mi sat down and started eating breakfast.

Jung So-Mi was flustered as her hand almost automatically reached out to grab a piece of the egg roll for Ha Jae-Gun. Her body had moved faster than her mind.

“Um, Writer Ha. Can I ask you something?”

“Yes, go ahead.”

“That assistant writer… You’re not planning to forgive her, right?”

Ha Jae-Gun stopped feeding himself and looked up. Jung So-Mi waved her hand in a hurry and added, “No, I was just asking out of curiosity since she cried so much that day. I was just wondering if she had been reflecting a lot on herself due to the mistake she made…”

“Did you see those as tears?” he asked.

“…Pardon?”

“Please eat.” Ha Jae-Gun smiled and ended the conversation.

Jung So-Mi couldn’t continue the conversation and resumed eating.

Bzzt!

“I’m sorry; please keep eating.” Ha Jae-Gun put down his chopsticks and stood up. The name that appeared on his phone was Oh Myung-Suk. Ha Jae-Gun smiled, thinking that Oh Myung-Suk would be picking him up from the office and answered the phone.

“Yes, editor-in-chief.”

— Mr. Ha, I’m extremely sorry, but I think I’ll be slightly late to the meeting tonight due to an unforeseen circumstance.

Ha Jae-Gun’s eyes narrowed. How could Oh Myung-Suk be late for such an important meeting today when he was always the one to be on time or even early?

What on earth happened? What was this unforeseen circumstance?

Chapter 193. The Bombing Starts (14)

— I must show up, so I’ll let Paramountain and the agency know. I’m truly ashamed for turning up late for such an important meeting like today.

“No, editor-in-chief. I’m fine.” Ha Jae-Gun didn’t feel offended at all since Oh Myung-Suk had always been quite a diligent person.

However, Ha Jae-Gun did not ask Oh Myung-Suk for the reason for his turning up late as he believed Oh Myung-Suk would have shared it willingly if possible. Since he had decided to keep it under wraps, it had to be something personal.

“I believe that something incredible must have happened if you had to run late for the meeting. I can head over directly from the office myself, so don’t worry too much about it.”

— Thank you for your understanding. I will only know how late I’ll arrive thirty minutes later. I’ll call you again.

“Sure, please update me.”

Ha Jae-Gun hung up the call and returned to the dining table. He picked up his chopsticks and prayed that nothing serious had happened to Oh Myung-Suk.

***

“Please make sure to keep it tightly under wraps. Please also check if there are any reporters who have found out about it.”

“Don’t worry, young master. I will clean everything up neatly,” Department Head Gu replied with a reliable answer like always.

He had been working for the OongSung Group for two generations since he started working for Oh Tae-Jin. His main job was to resolve all sorts of problems that should not be revealed to the public. Of course, it was also his job to deal with the mess that Oh Myung-Hoon had created recently.

“I always feel safe with you, Department Head Gu. I always feel apologetic.”

“Don’t mention it. Considering the warmth you’ve shown me all this time, this isn’t much. Please go quickly before the President returns.”

Oh Myung-Suk smiled bitterly and nodded. He turned around and got into the car where his chauffeur was waiting.

“Let’s go home. Please drive faster if possible.”

“I understand.”

As soon as they drove into the garage back at home, Oh Myung-Suk’s eyes widened in shock. His father’s car was still parked in the garage.

Oh Myung-Suk blamed himself for the delay in handling the mess and quickly got out of the car.

“H-Honey! Calm down!”

“Let me go, I said let me go!”

Oh Myung-Suk was horrified as soon as he stepped into the house. He ran inside without even taking off his shoes.

Oh Tae-Jin was outraged that he was about to hit Oh Myung-Hoon with a golf club in hand. Two maids and his mom couldn’t even stop his father.

“Father, please calm down!”

“Let go! I’ll beat the shit out of this guy no matter what! I shouldn’t have expected too much from you! I was still admiring how hardworking you were these days, but how dare you backstab us like that!? Argh, you good-for-nothing punk!”

Oh Myung-Suk hugged his father, pulling Oh Tae-Jin away. Meanwhile, Oh Myung-Hoon stood before them with his head half bowed down.

“I have done nothing wrong.”

“W-what?!”

“I was quietly drinking by myself, and they picked up a fight first. They were also the ones who had thrown an alcohol bottle in my direction, and I almost got hit by it. This was self-defense on my end.”

“What?! You’re already ruining the company image that your father and older brother worked so hard to keep up, and what? Self-defense?!”

Aigoo, father! Oh Myung-Hoon! Why aren’t you begging for forgiveness now?! Do you want to get hit by me, too?!”

Oh Myung-Suk was desperately holding his father back while scolding his brother. Oh Myung-Suk was sweating more than anyone else while getting sandwiched like a ham.

“Oh Myung-Hoon!”

“…Tsk.” Oh Myung-Hoon gnashed his teeth in anger. However, a dull thud soon echoed as he fell to his knees. “I’ll make sure this never happens again, Father.”

“You’re quick to change your attitude! Who would believe in someone who is all talk!”

A sharp glint showed in his eyes. “No, that’s not right. I’ve been doing well in the company all this while, haven’t I? Even in the States.”

“You’re still all talk! How could you talk back with everything you’ve done! Ugh…!

Oh Tae-Jin grunted and grabbed his nape while Oh Myung-Suk and his wife supported him on both sides.

Oh Myung-Hoon stayed lying on the ground and continued with his apology. “I apologize for the mess I’ve made. I think I was overwhelmed with stress from the workload overseas. I will make sure this never happens again.”

However, his apology sounded emotionless, as if he were a machine. Still, an apology was an apology, and Oh Tae-Jin’s haggard breathing calmed down slightly.

Taking the chance, Oh Myung-Suk quickly signaled with his eyes.

“Then I’ll change into a fresh set of clothes,” Oh Myung-Hoon got up and bowed down deeply, and then he hurriedly went to his room. His mother and a maid followed behind him.

“Let’s go to the study,” Oh Tae-Jin said and let out a long sigh.

Oh Myung-Suk stared blankly at his father.

“Let’s have a cigarette each, son.”

“Ah, yes. Let’s go, Father.”

Oh Tae-Jin put a stick of cigarette into his mouth as soon as he stepped into the study. It had been a while since he last smoked in the study. Oh Myung-Suk helped his father light up the cigarette. A huge cloud of smoke dispersed in the dark study.

“Was I too harsh just now?”

“No, Father.”

“There’s no way of knowing what he’ll do next, so how can I ever feel relieved? He has been taking his medicine ever since going to the States, right?”

“Yes, I’ve been checking in regularly.”

Everyone in the family knew that Oh Myung-Hoon had anger management issues.

Oh Tae-Jin nodded and continued puffing on his cigarette. The expression on his face spotted through the smoke was distorted.

“Sorry.” Oh Tae-Jin slowly reached out and grabbed Oh Myung-Suk’s hand firmly. He patted Oh Myung-Suk with his wrinkled hand and continued. “I’m ashamed to face you as your father.”

“Please don’t say that.”

“He is still quite pitiful. The smart and shrewd kid didn’t get to enjoy much of his mother’s love while growing up…. Please continue to look after him, although you’re already doing a great job.”

“Yes, I understand.”

Oh, Tae-Jin continued smoking without a word. Just as he was done with the cigarette butt, Oh Myung-Suk tried to change the topic of their conversation and chuckled.

“Congratulations, Father.”

Hmm? What, ahh…” Oh Tae-Jin smiled shyly upon realizing the reason behind Oh Myung-Suk’s words. Oh Myung-Suk was congratulating him for receiving the Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit at the Popular Arts Award.

“I heard that Writer Ha was awarded the commendation, right?”

“Yes, the Minister of Culture commendation in the Webtoon category.”

“You look disappointed.”

“Yeah…. He had made countless achievements despite his young age. To be honest, I was expecting him to receive the Presidential commendation.”

Oh Tae-Jin patted Oh Myung-Suk on his shoulder lightly and smiled, “How old is your father?”

“Why do you ask about that?”

“It took me this long to receive the Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit; it’s the same everywhere in the world.”

Hahaha… I see.”

Oh Tae-Jin grunted as he stood up from his chair. He looked around in the air, contemplating for a while, and said to Oh Myung-Suk, “Can you set up a meeting with him for me after the Arts Awards?”

“With Writer Ha?”

“I’m glad that you’ve kept a good relationship with such a great writer, so I’d like to treat home to a good dinner.”

Oh Tae-Jin paused for a moment and added, “Plus, you said it before, too, that I am relying too much on your judgment.”

Ahh. You’re talking about your new novel, right?”

“Yes, let’s make use of the global writer’s judgment this time. I’m already nervous that he would say it’s a mess and curse at my work.”

The father and son burst into laughter at the joke. Oh Myung-Hoon wasn’t with them at that moment, but he was still a part of the family in their hearts.

The licensing rights meeting did not take long to conclude in a hotel’s small meeting room in Myeongdong Seoul. The person in charge from Paramountain was able to come to a decision swiftly while exclaiming over a dozen times. Even the interpreter was grinning as they finished their work early for the day.

“Didn’t it end much earlier than the meeting we had with Director Yoon Tae-Sung?” Oh Myung-Suk said jokingly as he kept his laptop.

Aside from the condition of letting Ha Jae-Gun review the script after it was done before proceeding with filming, there was nothing else he could have asked for.

“Even the movie production method as well, there is a huge gap in culture. I think it’s best to let go of the reins when it comes to movies produced overseas. Especially when we’re talking about Paramountain.”

Ha Jae-Gun stretched his body and added, “I’ve decided to trust the cooperation of a Hollywood director and writer, as well as their team. If possible, I’d like to focus on my novels. The same goes for Director Lee Eun-Ha, who is directing Market Place. There are a lot of talented people around me, and so…”

Ha Jae-Gun trailed off and looked at Chae Yoo-Jin before continuing. “About Knobble Publications and Wizardry Pictures, I heard that they are still discussing The Breath.”

“Ah, yes. Feel free to speak, Mr. Ha.”

“I can give you a definite answer right now. I’ve gone through a few similar experiences so far, and I firmly believe that I’m a writer by nature. Movies and dramas are great, but I’d love it if I could start off with the book publication first. Money aside, I think it’s better for me to put my mind at ease as a writer first.”

Chae Yoo-Jin smiled warmly. She was here on two agendas, and she had been waiting for the opportunity to bring the second agenda up as well.

Um, Mr. Ha, shall we discuss The Breath over dinner?”

“Dinner? Sure, I don’t mind…”

“It’s still early, but it’ll soon be dinner time, too. Thanks to a certain slacker, the meeting ended later as well.”

Oh Myung-Suk cleared his throat, embarrassed. He couldn’t retort to her since Ha Jae-Gun was with them.

“So you’re agreeing to dinner, right? Let’s go then. Since we’re in Myeongdong, how about having mixed stew for dinner?”

Chae Yoo-Jin grabbed her bag and stood up excitedly. Ha Jae-Gun and Oh Myung-Suk both smiled while looking at each other and followed her out of the hotel.

They weren’t too far from the restaurant. The three of them chose to walk to the restaurant instead of driving over. As it was still early, they were able to grab seats in a relatively quiet area of the restaurant.

“It is already very popular from the get-go under the table.”

Before the pot of stew boiled, Chae Yoo-Jin started, “Myung-Suk—no, sorry. You should have heard from Editor-in-chief Oh before that my nephew and friends staying in LA have all fallen in love with The Breath. The editorial department from Knobble also gave a huge thumbs up after reading it.”

“Thanks for the compliment.”

“Mr. Ha, look at this. In addition to Korean Americans, there are also many posts about The Breath on various Western social media outlets. The posts there are as many as the posts in Korean portals.” Chae Yoo-Jin said enthusiastically and showed her phone to Ha Jae-Gun.

Ha Jae-Gun smiled happily and nodded slowly.

“The stew is going to boil into nothingness at this rate. Let’s eat first.”

“Please give me the ladle, Mr. Ha. Let me serve you. Ah, it’s been a while since I had mixed stew; I’m so excited.”

Chae Yoo-Jin served a portion of the stew to both Ha Jae-Gun and Oh Myung-Suk before serving a portion for herself. Ha Jae-Gun coincidentally noticed Chae Yoo-Jin whispering to Oh Myung-Suk, “I’m so feminine, right?”

They seem to like each other,’ Ha Jae-Gun suddenly thought.

Oh Myung-Suk always seemed flustered by Chae Yoo-Jin’s cheerful personality, but he didn’t particularly dislike it. Could this be called the warmth of a couple who had been dating for a long time?

The friendship that had overcome many hardships over the years—those emotions were clearly conveyed to Ha Jae-Gun as he sat across from them.

Would Soo-Hee turn out to be like Ms. Yoo-Jin in ten years?

Lee Soo-Hee was pretty, good at work, and thoughtful, but she lacked Chae Yoo-Jin’s carefreeness. Would Lee Soo-Hee change ten years later?

Ha Jae-Gun was unknowingly looking forward to it.

“Mr. Ha, what are you thinking about so deeply? Please have a glass.”

Ah, thank you. Let me pour you a glass, too.”

Ha Jae-Gun accepted a glass poured by Chae Yoo-Jin and poured one in return, as well as for Oh Myung-Suk. The trio raised their glasses.

“What shall we toast to? The Breath?”

“So early? We haven’t even signed a contract yet. If you’ve brought a contract with you, let’s go ahead and sign it. We can then toast to that.”

“Ah, really? Oh my, what should I do? I didn’t think we would need that contract today, so I left it at the hotel.”

“Then you’ll have to drink two shots as punishment.”

They burst into laughter and made a toast. At this point in time, Ha Jae-Gun never expected that their dinner and drinking would go past midnight.

At the same time, news about Ha Jae-Gun spread like wildfire on the internet: The licensing rights to Gyeoja Bathhouse were sold to Hollywood’s Paramountain at $1.8 million dollars.

Chapter 194. The Bombing Starts (15)

Hicc, Writer Ha. Let’s have one more glass, yes? I know of a good bar, and there’s a good vodka that I kept with them the last time I was there—Hicc!

“You’ve drank a lot. Let’s stop here for today.” Even Ha Jae-Gun’s legs were trembling slightly as he turned her down.

He was led on by Chae Yoo-Jin’s personality and momentum, making him drink a lot tonight, and it was already past midnight in the blink of an eye.

“There’s no next time! Mr. Ha, hicc! I live in the States. So don’t be like this, and let’s just have another~ glass.” The drunk Chae Yoo-Jin did not back down and continued urging for another round.

“Wake up, why did you drink so much, Ms. Chae Yoo-Jin?”

“And you’re being so formal with me now. Hey! Oh Myung-Suk! Do you have a death wish?!”

“I’ve told you countless times that Mr. Ha is with us, and this isn’t a private meeting, so please…”

Ah, I don’t know! I can’t hear you! Can’t hear you! Please hold me, Oh Myung-Suk. I think I’m going to fall… Ahaha!”

Ha Jae-Gun helped support Chae Yoo-Jin by grabbing onto her other arm. He then said softly to Oh Myung-Suk from behind her, “She must be happy to see you tonight, editor-in-chief.”

“I’m really sorry. She doesn’t usually drink this much…”

“She might be more excited than usual since she’s enjoying herself. I’ll leave her to you and get going first, then.”

“I’ve called a driver for you, Mr. Ha. They will arrive in a few minutes.”

However, Jaw-Gun rejected the offer with a smile. “I want to take the chance to walk for a while to sober up. Thanks a lot for today, editor-in-chief. Thanks to you, I was able to clear two large issues at once.”

“You’re most welcome, Mr. Ha. You’re the incredible person here, I didn’t do much at all.”

Ha Jae-Gun reached out his hand for a handshake. Oh Myung-Suk grabbed it, and they slowly shook hands.

Ha Jae-Gun said, “I apologize for being nosy, but if something bad had happened, I hope it’d get resolved soon. You don’t look that good today.”

“Was it… that obvious?”

Ha Jae-Gun only smiled and let go of the handshake instead of replying. He decided to skip saying goodbye to Chae Yoo-Jin since she seemed to be asleep and was already leaning on Oh Myung-Suk for support.

Ow, my head. I should probably get myself a hangover cure.

Bzzt!

As Ha Jae-Gun was headed to the convenience store nearby, his phone rang. Looking at the caller ID, he hesitated for a moment before finally answering the call.

“Yes, Ms. Ye-Seul.”

— Sorry for calling you at this hour. I called, thinking that you’d still be awake as I’ve got something to tell you.

“Go ahead.”

— I… It’s not official yet, but I think I’ll be cast as the female lead for Storm and Gale. The casting director dropped a small hint for me. That’s why, that’s why I called.

Ha Jae-Gun smiled as he opened the door to the convenience store. He had already heard of this news from Yoon Tae-Sung a few days ago, but he pretended that he had no idea and congratulated her.

“Really? That’s great! I hope you’ll do well and get good results.”

— Thanks a lot, Oppa. This is all thanks to you. Regardless of the results, this is going to be the best gift ever. I’ll never forget it in this lifetime of mine.

“It’ll be a box office hit, and your mother will definitely watch the movie.”

— I really hope that happens.

Their conversation came to a lull. During the pause, Ha Jae-Gun found the drink he was looking for and placed it at the cashier. The part-timer working there recognized Ha Jae-Gun and smiled shyly while scanning the item he had purchased.

— Um, Oppa!

Hong Ye-Seul raised her voice over the phone as if trying to say something. However, before Ha Jae-Gun could say anything in response, she quickly added softly.

— No, it’s nothing… I’ll hang up now. Ah, Oppa, I’ve also read the licensing rights news with Paramountain on the internet; congratulations. I’ve forgotten about it with my good news in mind.

“Thank you. You should sleep early, too, Ms. Ye-Seul.”

— You too, rest well and sweet dreams….

Ha Jae-Gun hung up the call.

As he drank the drink he bought, a new message came in.

– $1.8 million writer Mr. Ha, I’ve just finished work. I’m worried that you’re already asleep, so I’m sending you a message first.

Ha Jae-Gun grinned, revealing his teeth. Unlike the hesitation he had shown earlier when picking up Hong Ye-Seul’s call, he immediately made an outgoing call this time.

— Oh my, you’re still awake?

“Did you watch a historical drama? Why are you speaking like that today?

— I’m learning it. I started watching all the historical dramas in my backlog as soon as I got home.

Lee Soo-Hee chuckled. Her chuckle sounded like a sweet giggle from an angel to the happily drunk Ha Jae-Gun.

“Soo-Hee.”

— Please speak. I’m listening.

“I’ve mentioned this in Taiwan as well, but let’s get married as soon as you return from Taiwan.”

— You really mean it…?

Surprised, Lee Soo-Hee’s weird speech returned to normal.

Ha Jae-Gun nodded as if Lee Soo-Hee was standing before him.

“I drank a lot today. I just left the group and am walking about Myeongdong, trying to sober up… I’m thinking of going to the office instead of back home, it’s lonely without you at home.”

— I’ll be going back soon. Just a few days more.

“Let’s get married. Let’s meet your parents immediately when you return. I want to greet them officially and set a date for our marriage.”

— I’ll think over this seriously. And see how your proposal is…

“I’m proposing to you now.”

— What? Over the phone? No, I can’t accept this. But are you still walking? Didn’t you say you’re in Myeongdong? Take a taxi.

“I’m going to walk for a while longer. I’ll walk past Seoul station, Namyeong, and Yongsan… I’ll also walk past Noryangjin, Yeongdeungpo, my house, and then… I’ll walk all the way to Taiwan.”

— You really are drunk. Are you not going to take a taxi? You’re making me worried.

Ha Jae-Gun chuckled as he continued walking away. Every time he took a step, the darkness would slowly disappear, and Lee Soo-Hee would get closer and closer to him. Tonight was when he displayed his drunk tactics to Lee Soo-Hee, which he had done even once to his best friend, Park Jung-Jin.

Ha Jae-Gun felt like he no longer had to worry about anything.

***

At the same time, Oh Myung-Suk and Chae Yoo-Jin had just arrived at Chae Yoo-Jin’s hotel room.

“Take off your coat. Come here, I’ll do it for you.”

“I’m not that drunk. I can do it on my own.” Chae Yoo-Jin took off her own coat. Oh Myung-Suk took the coat from her and hung it on the hanger.

Chae Yoo-Jin smiled mischievously at him and said, “You finally came into my room tonight. You left me at the hotel entrance the last time.”

“…Because you’re too drunk. Do you want a cup of coffee?”

“Only if you’re going to drink it, too.”

“Okay, let’s have a cup each.”

Oh Myung-Suk made two cups of coffee from the capsule coffee machine and sat back down on the sofa. He heard some ruffling sound and turned around to see Chae Yoo-Jin taking off her sweater.

“What do you think? My body’s still got it, right?” Chae Yoo-Jin was now in a sleeveless top, twirling for Oh Myung-Suk.

Oh Myung-Suk looked away expressionless and took a sip of his coffee.

“What, you’re not even going to look now?”

“I’m afraid that I’ll pounce on you instead,” he replied. Although he said it like a joke, it was true to a certain extent. He was confident that Chae Yoo-Jin wouldn’t reject him if he were to reach out to her, knowing that her heart wouldn’t change at all.

However, he didn’t want to use her feelings for him and their current relationship to fill his loneliness. In addition, everything would return to its original state. He didn’t want to experience the pain of a breakup twice.

“Come have coffee. I’ll finish this cup and leave—”

Oh Myung-Suk couldn’t finish his sentence as Chae Yoo-Jin embraced him from behind.

“Stay with me for tonight.”

“What are you saying?”

“I couldn’t sleep at all on the day you just left like that. I’m not asking for anything else; you know me. Just stay with me for tonight; that’s all I’m asking.”

Chae Yoo-Jin let go of Oh Myung-Suk and went to sit next to him on the sofa. Their faces were so close that their noses were almost touching. They could even see each other’s reflection in each other’s eyes.

There was no saying who went first; their lips met, and their tongues tied together in an instant. Their rationale, which had been pulled taut, had finally broken.

Oh Myung-Suk grabbed Chae Yoo-Jin’s neck and slowly traveled down along her back and spine. It was his first time touching her body in several years, and it still felt as beautiful and familiar to his touch.

“Turn off the lights.”

“No.”

Oh Myung-Suk carried Chae Yoo-Jin and laid her roughly on the bed. The clothes taken off them were strewn all across the room. The over-accumulated thirst exploded, and their bodies became one.

***

— You can never win regardless of what you do, Mr. Park Do-Joon. Whether she received a check or went through the CCTVs from the cafe, they don’t prove anything. It’ll just turn into a huge mess if you counter-sue them. It’s a rigged fight, and Chae Bo-Ra is going to win it.

Haa…!

Park Do-Joon shook his throbbing head as he recalled the words he had heard at the lawyer’s office. Meanwhile, news about Paramountain purchasing the licensing rights to Gyeoja Bathhouse

was showing on the TV.

[…The licensing fee of $1.8 million dollars is worth 2.1 billion Korean won. It’s the highest amount of all Korean movies exported to Hollywood so far.]

[That’s right. Gyeoja Bathhouse had ended its screening with 3.7 million views in Korea, an all-time high, and is about to enter China, right?]

[Yes, even Teencent Pictures, its distributor in China, said that they are confident in breaking Korea’s record in three days. They said that they would do their best to help Gyeoja Bathhouse attain the best results. Let’s watch the video.]

Beep! Beep! Beep!

The door opened after the beeps. Knowing that Lee Chae-Rin was supposed to come, Park Do-Joon did not once look in the direction of the door and continued watching the TV.

“Shouldn’t you at least pretend to look at the door when someone is entering your house?”

“We met three hours earlier anyway.”

“Wow, you’re making me lose interest in you. Isn’t that right, Jae-Gun oppa?”

“…?!” Park Do-Joon flinched.

Lee Chae-Rin didn’t come alone. Ha Jae-Gun was beside her, smiling with a slight frown between his brows.

“Hey, Jae-Gun. Why did you appear without notice…”

“I came to see if you’re really busy since you’ve been refusing to meet me these days. So you lied to me, seeing that you’re at home watching TV and drinking vodka by yourself. Give me some, too.”

Ha Jae-Gun sat down next to Park Do-Joon. Meanwhile, Park Do-Joon glared resentfully at Lee Chae-Rin from over his shoulders.

Lee Chae-Rin feigned ignorance and turned to the kitchen. “I’ll bring some snacks over, Oppa.”

While Lee Chae-Rin was rummaging through the kitchen, Park Do-Joon filled Ha Jae-Gun’s glass with alcohol.

Ha Jae-Gun mumbled as he brought the glass to his lips, “Thank you.”

“…That Chae-Rin, she’s not loyal at all.”

“Don’t blame her, it’s Tae-Bong hyung who told me first.”

“What? Really?”

“Think of how worried he must have been to tell me the truth, but you should stop. I understand where you’re coming from, and am grateful to you for helping, but I don’t want you to waste your precious time on this.”

The two skipped the toast and emptied their glasses.

Lee Chae-Rin returned to the living room with a tray of fruits and cheese, pouting slightly while reading the atmosphere in the room.

Park Do-Joon threw a glance at her and said bluntly, “I want apples.”

“Okay. I’ll peel one for you first! Hehe.

Raising his glass high, Ha Jae-Gun said to Park Do-Joon, “You must swear that you will focus on filming Storm and Gale.”

“You too? And don’t you have to attend the Popular Arts Awards ceremony tomorrow? Can you still drink at this hour?”

“That’s my problem to deal with, so don’t change the topic. Quick, swear it.”

“How childish, making me swear on these. Alright, I swear. We done? Now, let’s just drink already. Let’s make a toast to you for getting the Minister of Culture’s commendation.”

The duo clinked glasses and drank their alcohol. Despite smiling on the outside, both of them were seriously contemplating what they could do for each other on the inside.

***

[Writer Ha Jae-Gun awarded Minister of Culture commendation. Public’s response: Good gracious?]

[Controversy on Ha Jae-Gun’s Minister of Culture commendation. What is the standard for the artists’ contribution to the development of the local pop culture?]

[Professor Han Hae-Sun criticizes the literary world for being conservative once again.]

[Tele-interview with Ha Jae-Gun: The award isn’t important at all. Only the readers reading my works are precious to me.]

“The internet is going crazy as expected.” Oh Myung-Suk laughed mockingly as he read the news articles. The results were as he had predicted. Media outlets were writing negative views on Ha Jae-Gun being awarded the Minister of Culture commendation rather than the Prime Minister’s commendation.

“And it has buried all the news related to Father…”

The news about Oh Tae-Jin getting awarded the Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit, which was also the highest-recognized award in the ceremony, was not seen at all in the search results.

The media and public only had eyes on the monster rookie writer Ha Jae-Gun.

Knock knock.

“Come in.”

The door opened, and Oh Tae-Jin walked in.

Surprised by his appearance, Oh Myung-Suk hurriedly turned off his monitor and stood up to greet his father.

“Father, why are you here in the office and not at home?”

“I didn’t want you to travel to and fro, so I thought it would be nice to head back together.”

Oh Tae-Jin was holding a manuscript. It was a new full-length novel that he had recently completed and revised. He brought it along to listen to the opinions from other writers other than his own son.

“Thinking that I’ll be showing this to Writer Ha instead of you is making me feel more nervous. I feel scared like back when I was in school.”

“It’s a good novel, Father. I’m not exaggerating when I said that I was extremely impressed after reading it. I’m sure you’ll hear good things from Writer Ha as well.”

Mm… I hope so, too….” Oh Tae-Jin mumbled, as if trying to reassure himself. He added strength in his hands, crumpling the manuscript slightly. The numerous stories that he had accumulated over the decades added weight to the thick stack of papers.

Chapter 195. What? Dragon Rider? (1)

“I’m all for it.”

“You’re really sure that you don’t mind if I get married first?”

“Look at the era we’re living in now; why should I get petty over such things? Mom and Dad are just worried about me, so they didn’t mention it, but I’m sure they’ll be very happy. You should bring her to meet them once she’s back.” Ha Jae-In smiled brightly while fixing Ha Jae-Gun’s clothes.

Ha Jae-Gun was dressed in a stylish suit instead of his usual attire, as he was going to have dinner with Oh Myung-Suk and Oh Tae-Jin.

“My younger brother is looking cool. Always getting me excited when I see you.”

“I’m turning thirty the day after. Stop it, ah…”

Ha Jae-Gun was about to turn around when he snapped his fingers and asked, “Noona, how about you?”

“Me? What about me?”

“What happened with Director Nam after that time?”

Ah… That…”

“You’re always turning red and trailing off when I ask you about it; how is that a proper answer to my question? Answer me, or I’m going to ask him directly.”

“N-no, don’t.” A worried expression filled Ha Jae-In’s face, and her shoulders shrank.

Ha Jae-Gun shook his head slowly with a frustrated look. “You’re seeing him with positive feelings, right?”

“…”

“Just tell me that. Are you sure about it?”

Mm…

“Just be sure of your feelings, whatever happens. Don’t make others worry about you.”

“All right, I know. It’s scary when you do this. You should get going now.” Ha Jae-In pushed Ha Jae-Gun away.

Ha Jae-Gun walked through the empty living room and to the door, putting on his shoes.

“Father and Mom are coming back late?” he asked.

“Whenever they attend a married couple’s meeting, they’ll always have dinner before coming back. Still, they should be back in a few hours.”

Ha Jae-In saw Ha Jae-Gun off at the garage, watching the wonderful car Ha Jae-Gun had received as a gift from Oh Myung-Suk.

“Noona, go back in.” Ha Jae-Gun opened the car door and took the driver’s seat.

As Ha Jae-Gun started the engine, Ha Jae-In said, “Come to think of it, I was on the phone with Director Nam, and he mentioned The Breath; he told me a few times that he really enjoyed the story. He was even looking at different business mediums for it.”

“Really? Does he want to make another mobile game from it?”

“I’m not sure either. Anyway, Oscar’s Dungeon was a huge hit, so he must want to hold on to Writer Ha Jae-Gun tightly.” Ha Jae-In smiled and pinched Ha Jae-Gun’s cheeks lightly.

Ha Jae-Gun put on his safety belt with a pout. It seemed that the kids’ treatment he was getting from Ha Jae-In would continue even beyond sixty.

“I’m going now. You should have dinner, noona.”

“Mm, I’m meeting Teacher Yoo from the academy later for dinner. Don’t worry, and drive safely.”

Ha Jae-Gun wound up his car window and stepped on the accelerator. As he drove out into the road, he thought of Oh Tae-Jin, whom he would be meeting in a while. More specifically, he was thinking about the novel that Oh Tae-Jin had written.

It was a great novel…

He felt as though electricity was coursing through his body while he was reading that novel. The novel’s main character was a ruined man who had lost both his friend and his woman. He even quit his job and wandered around the world, working daily wages for his livelihood. In the process, he met people from all walks of life. He then got hurt and grew stronger from his experience.

I should be able to read until the end of that novel, right?

Ha Jae-Gun had only received half of the manuscript from Oh Tae-Jin, thanks to Oh Myung-Suk for sending it over after the revision was completed. He would be able to gain access and read the remainder of the novel over dinner.

Will I be able to write such a great novel after accumulating more experience?

In fact, Ha Jae-Gun had not been able to work on his writings recently due to the withdrawals after reading Oh Tae-Jin’s novel. There was nothing else coming to his mind aside from the extremely well-written novel.

It was an unfamiliar sensation he had felt in a long time. He was dumbfounded at himself, but it was definitely envy that he was feeling.

Ha Jae-Gun felt that his own works were atrocious and even humiliating after reading Oh Tae-Jin’s novel, especially Foolish WomanA 90s Kid, and all his other earlier works.

He would even secretly drink alone at night while struggling in anguish, thinking about how good novels were good.

That fateful lonely night was painted once more before his eyes, and he smiled bitterly.

The traffic is pretty heavy today.

As it was near peak hours, it was taking him some time to arrive at the destination. But thankfully, he had left the house earlier, so he was able to arrive twenty minutes earlier than the agreed meeting time.

“Mr. Ha, you’re early!”

Ah, editor-in-chief!”

Ha Jae-Gun parked his car and alighted, greeting Oh Myung-Suk with open arms.

He smiled lightly and hugged the man.

“Why are you here so early? I thought I read the time wrongly.”

“I came earlier to just hang out around here for a while. Since you always come early, I thought of coming out here to see if you’ve arrived. As expected, my intuition is never wrong. Let’s go in.”

Ha Jae-Gun followed Oh Myung-Suk into the same pufferfish restaurant where he met Oh Tae-Jin for the first time.

As they took the stairs up the building, Oh Myung-Suk said, “You must like the food here, seeing that you agreed to have dinner here.”

“Yes, the food here truly surprised me. I told myself that I should come back again, and thanks to you, I’m about to eat their dishes again.”

They spotted Oh Tae-Jin as soon as they entered the restaurant. Oh Tae-Jin was reviewing his manuscript seriously. Oh Tae-Jin didn’t notice Ha Jae-Gun entering the restaurant even until he was at the table.

“Father, Mr. Ha is here.”

“Ah, I’m sorry. Welcome, Mr. Ha.”

Oh Tae-Jin smiled as he stood up in a hurry. Ha Jae-Gun shook hands with Oh Tae-Jin, whose hands were thick and looking healthy.

“It was a pity that we couldn’t talk much during the Popular Arts Awards.”

“I agree. President, congratulations once more on receiving the Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit Award.”

“Mr. Ha’s commendation by the Minister of Culture has much more value. I think that you’ll be able to receive the Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit in your forties. I’m only getting this now because I’m old.”

“You’re too humble, President.”

After a round of greetings, they sat around the table. They continued with small talk for a while over trivial matters in the literary world, as well as the achievements and overseas expansions Ha Jae-Gun had attained.

As the hotpot boiled down by half, Ha Jae-Gun found an opportunity and made his request. “Um, President, about the remainder of the manuscript…”

“Ahh, right. I was waiting for you to bring it up first, as I was too embarrassed to bring it up first. Anyway, here it is.” Oh Tae-Jin said as he handed the manuscript to Ha Jae-Gun with his face flushed. He looked like an affectionate young girl giving a hand-written heartfelt love letter.

“I’ve read the first half of the novel,” Ha Jae-Gun mentioned as he took the manuscript.

Oh Tae-Jin gulped, looking nervous. “What do you think, Mr. Ha.”

“It’s great.” Ha Jae-Gun said and looked at Oh Tae-Jin with determination before adding, “It was so good that I felt inferior.”

Hohoho…

“I’m not saying it to get into your good books. There was a period when I couldn’t work on my own novels after reading your work.”

Ha Jae-Gun never beat about the bush when talking about writing or novels. He would always express his feelings as they were as it was for the development of his own and others’ works. He had inherited his persistence from Professor Han Hae-Sun.

“Thank you so much for letting me read such a great novel earlier than any other readers in the world.”

Ha Jae-Gun stood up and gave a deep bow to Oh Tae-Jin. Taken aback, both Oh Myung-Suk and Oh Tae-Jin hurriedly stood up and bowed in return as well.

Oh my… Hoho, thank you. Thank you so much. I hope there’s a hole for me to hide around here, but at the same time, my heart is pounding because I’m so happy… What senseless talk at my age.” Oh Tae-Jin scrambled with joy.

Even Oh Myung-Suk was laughing uncontrollably in surprise. Oh Myung-Suk was confident, but he hadn’t expected such high praises coming from Ha Jae-Gun.

Ha Jae-Gun sat back down in his chair and picked up the manuscript. “Excuse me, but may I finish reading the rest of the novel right now, please?”

“Well, it doesn’t matter, but… right now?” Oh Tae-Jin asked, dumbfounded.

Even if it was the second half of the novel, it was still around 80,000 characters long. If Ha Jae-Gun was going to appreciate its contents, it should take him over thirty minutes to finish it at the very least.

“I would at least love to find out about the story’s development with a quick read. I’ve been very curious how the story would end, you see. I apologize for doing this in the middle of our dinner, but I’ll be extremely grateful if you could allow me to read it now.”

“S-sure. It’s my pleasure. Don’t mind us.” Oh Tae-Jin tried his best to suppress his pounding heart. He was also excited to hear Ha Jae-Gun’s final review.

“I’ll read this in my car for a moment so that I won’t affect you having dinner.”

“No, you don’t have to.”

“It’s because I’m already done with my dinner. I’ll return in thirty minutes.”

There was a reason why Ha Jae-Gun had to leave the restaurant to read in the car. He took out Seo Gun-Woo’s horn-rimmed glasses from the glove box. As soon as he put it on, he began flipping through the pages of the manuscript. The fine print on the manuscript began flowing into his eyes.

Hmm…?!

Ha Jae-Gun frowned after going through a few pages. Amidst the wrinkles that were formed on his face, Ha Jae-Gun was filled with unexpected doubts and disappointment.

Why does this read weird? How can it turn out like this…?

The novel was still going well for the first ten thousand characters. However, the problem came from the novel’s core story. There was a strong contrast between the heterogeneous style of writing and the monotonous narratives.

It felt as if another writer had taken over.

Ha Jae-Gun sat alone in the car as he fell into deep confusion.

What? It’s flowing naturally again from this point on?

Ha Jae-Gun’s mouth dropped open, stunned. The story returned to its original flow at around 10,000 characters before the novel’s ending.

The main character reunited with the love of his life, and the book ended with them looking at each other from afar.

Ha Jae-Gun stared at that certain part of the book for quite a while.

Was I too strict?’ He began suspecting the glasses themselves. Could he, perhaps, be using Seo Gun-Woo’s sharp judgment while reading the novel? Ha Jae-Gun took off the glasses and decided to go over the novel once more.

No, it wasn’t an illusion….’ The results remained the same.

The feelings from earlier didn’t change a single bit.

Ha Jae-Gun put down the stack of papers on his lap and let out a long sigh.

He regretted giving such high praises in the first half of the novel back in the restaurant. He never expected that a novel written by the same person could bring such a huge disparity.

Looking at the time, it was well past his promised thirty-minute mark.

Ha Jae-Gun returned to the restaurant. As soon as he stepped through the door, he saw Oh Tae-Jin and Oh Myung-Suk waiting for him anxiously.

“You’re really back in thirty minutes.”

“Yes, I thought I couldn’t take too long, so I did some speed reading.”

Oh Tae-Jin’s eyes were filled with expectations.

Ha Jae-Gun cleared his throat and began speaking truthfully. “Is it alright if I write a proper review after reading it more in detail and send it over to you via email? I think it’s rude to give you my reviews when I’ve only done a brief read-through.”

Ahh, sure… I’ll be grateful if you could do that.” Oh Tae-Jin nodded slowly before letting out a sigh that had a mix of sadness and relief.

He desperately needed reviews, but it wasn’t just because he was a writer. There was another reason behind it.

“Now, Mr. Ha, please have a glass.”

“Thank you. I’ll pour you a glass as well.”

The three men raised their glasses and shared a toast. However, Oh Tae-Jin felt extremely anxious. After living for a good sixty years, he had learned to read the expressions on people’s faces.

And Ha Jae-Gun had been acting quite rigid ever since his return.

Although Oh Tae-Jin had a lot of questions in his mind, he could not speak of them freely. His eldest son seemed to be the only one enjoying himself while talking to Ha Jae-Gun.

[An explosive effect on Oscar’s Dungeon, Nextion’s mobile game sales grew 24% year-on-year]

[Huge achievement in both Korea and China, counting down to the next release of Oscar’s Dungeon in Taiwan]

[Nextion’s planning director, Nam Gyu-Ho: Development of the game Gyeoja Bathhouse is going well, thanks to the power of the original novel.]

[Concerned voices from local women groups: Game restriction age for Oscar’s Dungeon should be raised to prevent students’ addiction to the game]

Nam Gyu-Ho was currently reading the news on his phone alone in the pantry, there was no one else around in the early morning. The performance remained great, and the popularity of Oscar’s Dungeon in Korea and China increased exponentially day by day.

I never knew it would rake in so much popularity.

The cumulative number of downloads and sales had exceeded expectations by a huge margin. Nam Gyu-Ho exclaimed, rolling his tongue in his mouth. He then moved his finger on the screen, clicking on the ebook of the first volume of The Breath.

Next would be you…

It had been a while since he started thinking about The Breath. They were a game company, so it was natural that he would want to turn this novel into a game as well.

However, the issue was the platform that the game would go on.

It would look good either way, regardless of the platform.

Nam Gyu-Ho scrolled through the ebook mindlessly as he fell into deep thoughts. He had read the novel countless times, but he would always fall in love with it over and over again.

He had always believed in his own judgment. He believed that this novel would definitely become a huge hit as a game, regardless of the platform. Accepting his extreme conclusion, he burst into laughter once more.

“Kekekek… Hahahaha!” His laughter was both contrived and sinister.

He was at the scene where the main character had lost his colleague and had almost lost his mind.

Just then, an employee had stepped through the door to the pantry, his face turning pale.

Bzzt!

Nam Gyu-Ho’s phone rang, and his screen showed the caller ID.

Nam Gyu-Ho immediately stopped laughing and answered the call.

“Hello, this is Nam Gyu-Ho.”

Chapter 196. What? Dragon Rider? (2)

— Hello, Director. I just read the text message you sent. Are you in the office?

“Yes, I’m having a cup of coffee in the pantry,” Nam Gyu-Ho replied as he checked himself out in the reflection on the glass window. He tended to act as if Ha Jae-In was in front of him whenever they talked on the phone.

— Have you had breakfast? You didn’t just have a cup of milk for breakfast, right?

“I’m an obedient man. I had proper food.”

— That’s good.

Ha Jae-In’s refreshing giggle traveled to his ears, and Nam Gyu-Ho shrugged his shoulders proudly. Ha Jae-In’s simple words were far better than the praises his father gave him at work.

“How about you, Ms. Jae-In? Have you had breakfast?”

— Yes, I did. I’m about to prepare to head out.

“You’re going to the academy this early?”

— No. There’s something I have to attend in Seoul. I’m meeting a friend about my high school alumni meeting.

Nam Gyu-Ho’s eyes widened when he heard the word Seoul.

“Really? You should be having lunch with your friend, so if you have time, would you like to have coffee with me?”

— Are you sure? I’m fine with having coffee, but you should be busy….

“Don’t worry about me, and give me a call later.”

— Alright, I’ll meet my friend first and give you an update later.

“I’ll be waiting.”

— Of course.

Nam Gyu-Ho hung up the call and whistled on his way to the washroom. Nam Gyu-Ho raised his nose in the air as he scanned his outfit in the mirror. Had he known he was going to meet Ha Jae-In today, he would have paid more attention to his outfit today.

Bzzt!

Just then, a message came in.

Nam Gyu-Ho was about to wash his hands when he picked up his phone to check the message, and his eyes widened at its content.

It was a message from Ha Jae-Gun.

– Hello, director. How have you been? Oscar’s Dungeon has been doing well, thanks to you, so I would like to treat you to dinner. Please let me know when you would be available.

Hmm…?

Nam Gyu-Ho tilted his head curiously. Did Ha Jae-Gun really want to meet him because of Oscar’s Dungeon? Ha Jae-Gun had to know that he was dating the former’s sister, Ha Jae-In.

Ah, it’s kind of awkward to meet him right now.

Nam Gyu-Ho was afraid of meeting Ha Jae-Gun at this period in time, as he hadn’t persuaded his father just yet. If Ha Jae-In was brought up in their conversation over dinner, there was no way he could give him a satisfactory answer.

– Thank you for your words. I will contact you again as soon as possible.

Nam Gyu-Ho returned a short reply after much consideration. He would have returned with a call on normal days, but that was too much for him now. His face was darkened with anxiety as he left the washroom.

“It’s been a while, Jae-In. Why haven’t you changed a single bit? You haven’t put on any weight, you still look the same as when you were a student.”

“What? I put on makeup today, covering my wrinkles. You’re the one who still looks like a university student.” Ha Jae-In held Sook-Hee’s hands, whom she hadn’t met in years.

Sook-Hee was Ha Jae-In’s classmate back in her third year of high school. They were always seen together but not considered the closest of friends. Sook-Hee was always green with envy and loved showing off, so Ha Jae-In always kept a distance from her.

“It’s nice to see you. How are we the only ones who are free to meet?”

“I know, right? Most of them must be busy taking care of children after getting married. Let’s decide on what to have for lunch first.”

The two of them headed to a restaurant nearby and discussed their alumni meeting. After deciding on a date and place, the two of them continued their conversation, sharing information about their lives.

“I heard your brother is doing really well these days. He was so popular when I looked him up on the internet. Hollywood even purchased the license to his works.”

“Yeah, things just worked out for him since he works hard.” Ha Jae-In replied briefly.

If Sook-Hee were her close friend, Ha Jae-In would have been excited bragging about Ha Jae-Gun, but Ha Jae-In knew that Sook-Hee had always been the epitome of jealousy.

Tsk, bitch. Pretending to be calm when you’re actually happy about it.”

“It’s not like that.”

“How much does he earn? Did he earn around 10 billion won?” Sook-Hee questioned repeatedly.

Ha Jae-In only smiled awkwardly and gave a light nod.

Sook-Hee was shocked, and her jaw dropped. “Really? He really earned 10 billion won?”

“Why do you keep asking that?”

“Wait, what has he been writing that allowed him to earn so much? I was just asking.”

“The ebooks market grew a lot, so he’s earning a lot from it.”

Sook-Hee rolled her tongue and leaned back in her seat. She was about to brag about her wealthy boyfriend, but a dark cloud was now brewing on her face at the unexpected news.

“I see. That’s really great. Seems like the old saying that writers are always suffering is in the past now. Should I try writing a novel, too?” Sook-Hee said lazily as she stretched herself. She then changed the subject and said, “But novels aside, I have been busy dating recently. I don’t even have time for my own hobby.”

“I saw your profile picture. He looks handsome.”

“He’s above average, I guess? I met him at a swing dance club and thought he looked good, and his family is quite well-off, too. His father runs an SME in the IT industry.”

“That’s great, congratulations. I should get the bouquet from you at your wedding when you get married then.” Ha Jae-In chuckled.

However, Sook-Hee didn’t look pleased. She couldn’t show off fully after knowing Ha Jae-Gun’s success.

“You don’t have a boyfriend yet?”

“Me? Um…

“So you do have one. What kind of person is he? What does he do?” Sook-Hee pestered as if interrogating Ha Jae-In.

Ha Jae-In saw through Sook-Hee’s plan to compare their boyfriends and smiled vaguely.

Hmm? What kind of person is he? I’m curious.”

“He’s just… an office worker.”

“Office worker? What company does he work in?”

“At a game company.” She didn’t want to reveal too much out of consideration for Nam Gyu-Ho.

Sook-Hee clicked her tongue, casting a pitiful look. “It’s tough working at game companies. I heard about it from my boyfriend since he works in the IT industry. They have to work really hard and overtime quite often, too.”

“There’s not a job in the world that’s easy.”

“Of course, but… Alright. So what if your boyfriend isn’t rich? You must have a lot of money since your brother earns so much money. Hohoho.

Sook-Hee covered her mouth, bursting into laughter, but Ha Jae-In felt disgusted. Ha Jae-In couldn’t wait to part with Sook-Hee.

“I enjoyed the meal. Let me pay for it.”

“No, you came all the way to Seoul, I should be paying for it.”

Sook-Hee and Ha Jae-In left the restaurant. Sook-Hee pointed to a cafe across the street and asked, “Do you want some coffee?”

“I’m sorry, but it’s almost time for me to return to the academy.” Ha Jae-In smiled bitterly.

Sook-Hee did not seem disappointed and nodded with a smile.

“Can’t help it then. Shall I send you off?”

“No, it won’t take too long by subway.”

“Okay. Be careful on your way back, and see you at the alumni gathering. Bye.”

“Yeah. You should drive carefully, too. See you again, Sook-Hee.”

After leaving Sook-hee, Ha Jae-In stopped by the pharmacy first. She bought herself a bottle of digestive medicine and then pulled out her phone while heading to the subway station.

After a short ringtone, Nam Gyu-Ho answered the call.

— You’ve ended already?

“Yes, we had lunch and decided on the location for the alumni gathering.”

— If there’s any issue with the venue for your alumni gathering, let me know. I can prepare a good venue for you.

“No, it’s fine. You’re busy as it is….”

— Anyway, let’s meet first. Where are you now? I’ll go over.

“Don’t do that; why don’t I go over to somewhere near your office?”

— Near our office…?

“Yes, I don’t think it’s that far at all. I feel like staying out for a while for the first time in a long while, so I’ll go to you if you’re fine with that.”

— Sure, I’m alright with it, but… are you sure you won’t be tired?

“It’s not that far off. I’ll contact you again.”

Ha Jae-In grinned after hanging up. She could somewhat imagine the look on Nam Gyu-Ho’s face. He seemed to look more like a boy as she got to know him more. Her steps quickened as she passed the ticketing gates.

***

“President, you can’t keep traveling around alone. Please tell me where you’re going, at the very least.”

“You’re worrying too much, Department Head Bae. I’m just going to see my son for a bit, so why are you annoying me so much?” Nam Gyu-Baek grumbled. He was currently in a hiking outfit and wore his cap low, covering his face.

He would always head to Nextion headquarters whenever he went out for a stroll these days. He was extremely worried for his son, who was dating a woman whose identity was unknown to him.

Department Head Bae followed behind Nam Gyu-Baek with a troubled look.

“There should be a lot of people who would recognize you on the streets, too….”

“That’s why I wore a bucket hat and a hiking suit.”

“I’m worried about your health too….”

Ah, that’s why I’m going for walks as per the doctor’s instructions!” Nam Gyu-Baek grumbled. He couldn’t even buy a snack of his own free will with Department Head Bae around him. The man would always nag at him, saying that this and that was bad for his body. Most of Department Head Bae’s words usually ended with no.

After walking for a while, a pharmacy came into view. Nam Gyu-Baek found it timely and stopped in his tracks, saying to the man, “Look, I’m thirsty now, so get me a bottle of Buckas.”

“No,” the man replied with determination and shook his head.

Nam Gyu-Baek’s face distorted like a scrapped car.

“Are you saying you’re not going to listen to my orders?”

“No, it’s because I know what you’re thinking. I won’t fall for the same trick twice.”

Department Head Bae was referring to the incident a few weeks back. Back then, Nam Gyu-Baek had asked him to buy some bread and took the chance to run away from him.

“I’m really thirsty, and you know where I’m headed, anyway.”

“Mm….” Department Head Bae groaned and looked at the high-rise building over Nam Gyu-Baek’s shoulders—the Nextion headquarters.

“I understand. You must wait here for me.”

“I’ll stay rooted here like a tree.”

Department Head Bae ran toward the pharmacy. As soon as he crossed the automatic doors, Nam Gyu-Baek hurried and blended into the crowd on the streets. He was all smiles, looking innocent like a child.

Huff puff, he’s so easily tricked…!”

Nam Gyu-Baek finally stopped after running a distance. He grinned, feeling proud for shaking off Department Head Bae.

Ugh…?!’ Nam Gyu-Baek suddenly stopped in his tracks.

His smile vanished without a trace as he stiffened and started trembling violently. It was a seizure caused by cardiac infarction.

Ho, ohhh…!” Nam Gyu-Baek collapsed to the ground. He lay flat on his back, looking up at the sky as his face turned as white as a sheet of paper.

“Sir? Are you okay?!”

A hand reached out to him out of the blue, supporting his head.

“…!”

The face of an unfamiliar woman came into his view.

“Are you okay? Someone! Call an ambulance!” the woman yelled, kneeling on the ground. “Are you having a heart attack? Do you have any medicine with you?”

Nam Gyu-Baek couldn’t reply to her. The woman hurriedly searched his clothes and discovered a bottle of medicine in his breast pocket. He then put the pill under his tongue.

“What, what’s happening?”

“I’m not sure… he collapsed out of the blue.”

A crowd soon gathered around them.

Department Bae emerged through the crowd a while later.

Aigoo, President!” He turned pale and tossed away the bottle in hand. The woman kneeling by Nam Gyu-Baek was relieved to see him.

“He’s having a heart attack, right? I’ve given him some medicine, so he should be fine in a bit.”

“Thank you so much…! How can something like this happen in a short period of time…!”

Department Head Bae blamed himself while calling his team members. He then supported Nam Gyu-Baek up and thanked the woman once more.

“I would like to repay you for this. Please give me your contact number if you don’t mind.”

“You don’t have to. It’s alright.”

“Your pants are dirty now, too. Oh, no, I should at least give you some money for laundry, but I don’t have any cash with me…”

“It’s okay. Please be careful, I’ll be going first.”

The woman stood up and brushed her pants. She turned around and walked away.

Nam Gyu-Baek was still in shock as his pupils quivered, staring at the woman’s departing figure. He had only caught a glimpse of the woman’s visage, but her face was engraved on his mind.

Chapter 197. What? Dragon Rider? (3)

“Why did you do it, father? You should always be careful. Don’t you know that it’s dangerous for you to run all of a sudden like that?”

“Enough. I’ve heard enough from Department Head Bae, so stop it.”

The father and son were in a hospital’s VIP ward. Nam Gyu-Baek looked disgusted as he lay on the bed.

Nam Gyu-Ho had rushed over after receiving a call from Department Head Bae. He was now loosening his necktie and wiping the sweat off his forehead.

“Please listen to him, Father. You’re no longer in your youth, and Mother is no longer around as well, so you only have him who can help you on the side. Please don’t let others worry about you!”

“Alright, alright! Why are you raising your voice so much today?”

Ha…!” Nam Gyu-Ho let out a sigh and stepped out of the ward.

As soon as Nam Gyu-Ho stepped out, the anger Nam Gyu-Baek showed on his face disappeared immediately.

“That punk, since when did I say I was right? There was no need for him to raise his voice…” Nam Gyu-Baek mumbled softly.

Meanwhile, Department Head Bae, standing by the bedside, carefully added, “Um… he just has difficulty expressing himself, but he’s the most worried about you.”

“I know. I’m just grumbling.”

“I’m sorry for overstepping.”

Nam Gyu-Baek looked out the window and remained silent for a while. His dull eyes took in the scenery of Namsam Tower, Han River, and Woomyeon Mountain.

‘The president has aged a lot…‘ Department Head Bae thought to himself as he watched silently. It was pitiful to see Nam Gyu-Baek’s shoulders droop. Would it be less pitiful when it was said that he originally had a thin physique?

Nam Gyu-Baek was originally a tall, healthy and dashing man. However, he had been watching that young man slowly turn skinnier day by day.

According to his memory, Nam Gyu-Baek had been going downhill ever since he sent off his wife.

“Look here, Department Head Bae.”

“Yes, President,” he snapped out of his thoughts and replied immediately.

Nam Gyu-Baek was still admiring the scenery outside as he added, “How long have you been working with me?”

“It’ll soon be fifteen years.”

“That’s long enough to move the mountains. So many things have happened, the thought that you’d be feeling exhausted by now came to mind.”

“Of course not. It’s a blessing and the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

“Don’t say things you don’t mean.”

“I’m being honest. It was all thanks to your grace that I was able to send my children to university, didn’t hear a single nagging from my wife, and was able to live confidently as the head of the household. You’re the best person in this world.” Department Head Bae bowed down ninety degrees to express his deep gratitude.

Nam Gyu-Baek spotted white hair sprouting from the top of his head and finally realized how much time had passed. A small and bitter smile formed on the corners of his mouth.

“Anyway… letting the lady leave like that… it’s tugging at the back of my mind.” Nam Gyu-Baek mumbled, changing the topic of their conversation. The face of the woman who had helped him when he had collapsed from a seizure appeared vividly in his mind.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t think too much about it as I was too caught up in the moment.”

“You don’t have to apologize, but I still feel uncomfortable. I should repay her for the help received, but without her contact number, there’s nothing else I can do.”

“Maybe we might be able to meet her again. She might be working near Director Nam’s office, too.”

Hmm.” Nam Gyu-Baek slowly turned his head to the side. He looked at the door, which his son left, and added, “When did you say your eldest son is getting married?”

“It’s been moved up, so he’s getting married late next month.”

“That’s great. Nam Gyu-Ho should get married soon, too. That pathetic punk has no thoughts of succeeding the family line. Is he planning to die of old age as a bachelor while working his entire life?”

Nam Gyu-Baek had never considered the woman whom his son liked as a bride and potential daughter-in-law. There had to be a good reason why Nam Gyu-Ho still couldn’t introduce her to him.

Nam Gyu-Baek was convinced that she had to be with great flaws.

***

At the same time, Nam Gyu-Ho stood outside the ward in the hallway, his face still contorted, unable to relax. His father’s love for his mother wasn’t incomprehensible. However, there was nothing he could do with the frustration he was feeling.

“If he doesn’t want to remarry, then he should at least go back to dating…”

The wealthy father and son pair were worried about each other being alone with a wall between them.

Nam Gyu-Ho shook his head disapprovingly and headed toward the vending machine. On his way over, his phone started ringing. It was a message from Ha Jae-In.

– Did your problem get resolved? I’m sending a message because I’m worried.

– Yes, thankfully, it ended well. I’m sorry for making you come all the way here and return without meeting up. I’ll repay you ten times for this.

Nam Gyu-Ho replied to her with a message instead of returning a call. He was afraid that the emotions that he still had problems processing would be revealed over the phone.

– That’s too much; you don’t have to do that, but just treat me to ten cups of coffee for the one cup I missed today. ^^

– I have no issues treating you to a hundred million cups.

Nam Gyu-Ho opened the photo album on his phone after sending out that message.

Ha Jae-In’s refreshing face appeared on the screen, making him smile until Nam Gyu-Baek’s cough came through the door.

Tadadadak! Tadak! Tadadak!

The typing sounds in the Bucheon writer’s office were nonstop today.

Lee Yeon-Woo’s fingers danced across the keyboard.

Seems like all his worries had disappeared.

Jung So-Mi smiled and glanced at Lee Yeon-Woo from across the table. Lee Yeon-Woo had been struggling for a while due to the sluggish sales performance of his novel. Thankfully, he had recovered since the last drinking session with Ha Jae-Gun.

“Yes! I’m done!” Lee Yeon-Woo yelled as he entered the last period in the document. He immediately covered his mouth as he turned around and looked at Jung So-Mi.

“Sorry, I was so excited after finishing it that I didn’t realize…”

“I’m fine, the other writers aren’t around either.”

Only Lee Yeon-Woo and Jung So-Mi were in the work area. Rika and Nun-Sol were each curled up beside Jung So-Mi’s mouse and on her lap.

Lee Yeon-Woo stretched and looked toward the bedroom, mumbling, “It’s almost time for lunch, but is Jae-Gun hyung going to skip his meals again?”

“I guess so. He hasn’t come out yet, after all,” Jung So-Mi replied as she turned around to look at the door to the room where Ha Jae-Gun was holed up. It seemed that they could see him through the door, with his eyes shining and typing away on the keyboard.

“I think he’s feeling burdened because it’s the ending of his novel.”

Ha Jae-Gun was currently working on the last volume of Oscar’s Dungeon, which he had spent several nights on. Ha Jae-Gun was always on edge, aside from when he was sleeping. It was no wonder that even Rika knew not to disturb him.

“Shall we have lunch just by ourselves then?”

“Sure, let’s go,” Jung So-Mi replied and stood up from her seat. She very much hoped to have lunch with Ha Jae-Gun, but it ended in a failure today as well. In fact, it had already been a few days since Jung So-Mi had a proper conversation with him despite being in the same office.

However, Lee Yeon-Woo was in a good mood. As he opened the door, he suggested in an energetic voice. “Deputy Jung, there’s a delicious chicken galbi restaurant in Bupyeong. Do you want to go there?”

“All the way to Bupyeong?”

“It won’t take too long if we drive. Shall we?”

“I’m sorry, I’m tired, so I’m hoping to have lunch at the arcade nearby.” Jung So-Mi smiled apologetically.

Despite being rejected, Lee Yeon-Woo was still all smiles. “Let’s go to that restaurant next time, then. What would you like to have for lunch?”

“Anything is fine. Please decide on the menu, Writer Lee.”

“I noticed that you enjoyed the noodles last time; let’s go there again then.”

“You don’t have to think about me; feel free to choose something you’d like to eat.”

However, there was no way Lee Yeon-Woo would not take her preference into consideration. No, he was bound to take her preference into consideration. The reason had embedded itself deep in his heart without him realizing it.

“Shall I tell you a gag that has been trending lately? When boiling bibim noodles, it can’t splash onto your arm. Do you know why? Because your arm would turn into bibim noodles, too.[1] Hahahaha!”

“Oh my, it’s so funny that I should be rolling on the floor laughing. You must have learned it from Writer Kang, right?” Jung So-Mi chuckled, even though she truly had no idea how to respond to such a joke.

Her response made Lee Yeon-Woo happy. As someone who always viewed others as they were, Lee Yeon-Woo admired her honesty a lot.

If only I did better…‘ Lee Yeon-Woo only had that in mind the entire time they were eating noodles.

Was it an inferiority complex? He felt inferior next to Jung So-Mi. The latter was nice, cute, and pretty. She was also good at her work, and she had a bright, sunny demeanor.

His novels, which were his main source of income, were struggling. Strictly speaking, Ha Jae-Gun was the reason he was still alive.

What if the office that also provided for his food and accommodations, as well as his job as a manager, disappeared? He would have nothing left.

“Writer Lee, your noodles are turning soggy. What are you doing not eating them?”

Ah, yes. I’ll be eating them now.”

Jung So-Mi served him a portion of the lunch. Lee Yeon-Woo hurriedly picked up his chopsticks and steeled his resolve that he would grow up to be an incredible person.

Immersed in his determination, he put a huge mouthful of noodles in his mouth but ended up spitting them out as the noodles were too hot.

***

“How was it? Are you still in pain?”

“I feel better after applying some ointment.”

Lee Yeon-Woo entered the password as he rubbed the insides of his mouth with the tip of his tongue.

As soon as the door opened, he saw Ha Jae-Gun in the living room, drinking some coffee while stroking Rika on his lap.

Oh, Jae-Gun hyung. You’re done?”

“Just done. Have you had lunch with Ms. So-Mi?”

“Yes, we had clam noodles[2]. You should have lunch too, hyung.”

“I’m heading out for lunch, I have an appointment with someone.”

“Where are you going? I should drive you over.”

“I’ll go on my own. I’m going to meet Director Nam, and I’m not sure how long we’ll talk.”

Ha Jae-Gun soon finished his coffee and put Rika down.

Lee Yeon-Woo spotted the part under Ha Jae-Gun’s chin that looked darker than usual and blurted, “Jae-Gun hyung, are you not going to shave?”

“Oh, right, I almost forgot. Thank you.”

Ha Jae-Gun touched the prickly mustache and headed to the bathroom. Ha Jae-Gun stiffened the moment he saw himself in the mirror. He couldn’t believe that a few nights of staying up late would make him look so haggard.

“Why did he not help me?” Ha Jae-Gun blurted those words unknowingly. The memories where both of them used to exchange opinions, debate, and seek better answers to their questions freely every moment got more and more blurry.

It was much worse when he was working on fantasy novels. Seo Gun-Woo never said a single word or gave a single piece of advice when Ha Jae-Gun was working on fantasy novels.

In fact, throughout the time Ha Jae-Gun wrote the last volume of Oscar’s Dungeon, he had never once felt Seo Gun-Woo’s presence.

“I’m worried, elder… Can I end the novel here?” It was a rhetorical question. Was it real that he was able to hear Seo Gun-Woo’s voice in the first place? Or was it just his illusion?

Looking back now, Ha Jae-Gun hadn’t been able to differentiate. As if trying to wake from a dream, he turned on the tap and washed his face with cold water.

***

“It’s interesting. If this is the final manuscript, can I update it immediately?”

Ah, update?”

“We need to prepare for the latest season of Oscar’s Dungeon. That’s why I have been waiting for that last volume for so long.” Nam Gyu-Ho asked in return, thinking that he was stating the obvious.

“This manuscript you brought today is over half a volume’s worth, right? Please let me know once your ending is confirmed.”

“I understand. I’ll do that.”

The two picked up their chopsticks. They were having tofu hotpot for late lunch.

After portioning a plate of the food for themselves…

“There’s something I would like to tell you, Director Nam…”

“There’s something important I have to tell you, Mr. Ha…”

The two men started talking at the same time and stopped themselves immediately. They looked at each other awkwardly for a while. Ha Jae-Gun finally raised his hand and let Nam Gyu-Ho speak first, “Please go ahead.”

“No, you should speak first, Mr. Ha.”

“I think mine would take longer to discuss. Director Nam is better at going straight to the point, so please speak first.”

Mm, alright then.” Nam Gyu-Ho put down his chopsticks and took a sip of water to moisten his parched throat, with a hunch, knowing what Ha Jae-Gun was about to bring up. As he had expected, today’s lunch would turn into a tough fight.

Nam Gyu-Ho cleared his throat a few times. His eyes turned serious, and he looked at Ha Jae-Gun before saying, “About The Breath…”

Chapter 198 – What? Dragon Rider? (4)

“Ah… Yes.”

Ha Jae-Gun nodded his head, recalling how Ha Jae-In had brought up Nam Gyu-Ho looking for a way to bring The Breath into the game market in one of their conversations a while back.

Nam Gyu-Ho continued with caution. “Amongst all of your works, I enjoyed The Breath the most. I’ve always wanted to turn the novel into a game. I’ve become even more convinced of its potential because of the success of your Oscar’s Dungeon.”

Nam Gyu-Ho continued with enthusiasm, even leaning forward as he added, “I hope you’ll put your trust in me this time as well. I’m considering to develop it into a PC game.”

“A PC game?”

“Yes, specifically a high-quality MMORPG.”

Ha Jae-Gun was at a loss for words. Nam Gyu-Ho smiled and crossed his arms with confidence.

He’s turning it into an MMORPG?’ MMORPG meant massive multiplayer online role-playing games where multiple users could connect online and enjoy the game simultaneously with others in the same world.

The world of MMORPG had grown tremendously with the development of 3D graphics. Popular MMORPG games were usually magnificent with vibrant colors. This was also partly due to the fact that there were many more features that could be implemented in the game compared to mobile-based MMORPG games.

The highly prided, detailed, and three-dimensional world was displayed through vibrant graphics in the battle-filled MMORPG game.

…Will it work?

Ha Jae-Gun recalled the MMORPG games that Park Jung-Jin enjoyed playing, and his heart began pounding. The thought of having another of his fantasy novels turn into a large-scale game once more was clearly exciting to him.

However, he also felt anxiety aside from the excitement. He was afraid that the times had completely changed, as this was the era when people would be on their phones most of the time instead of staying at their computers all day.

While Ha Jae-Gun remained silent, unable to give Nam Gyu-Ho an answer, Nam Gyu-Ho uncrossed his arms and continued. “The world of The Breath is vast. Not only the knight and the dragon but there are countless other characters that intertwine with each other, creating various interesting playstyles. There will definitely be a limit to how much the mobile game version can express that world.”

“I suppose so.” Ha Jae-Gun nodded.

He turned down the fire of the reduced tofu hotpot and said, “Of course, I would welcome it with open arms, regardless of its profits. But… I’m slightly worried, wondering if it would work out well.”

“Making it successful is my job,” Nam Gyu-Ho replied confidently, like always.

Despite feeling reassured, Ha Jae-Gun still smiled bitterly. “I wholeheartedly believe in your abilities, Director Nam, but I still can’t help but worry. You must be more well-informed than I am, but many MMORPG games released in Korea are struggling to stay afloat.”

Nam Gyu-Ho nodded in agreement. “Well, there are indeed many games that had to shut down shortly after their releases since the development costs are much higher than mobile games, but…”

Nam Gyu-Ho trailed off, but an aggressive smile appeared on his face. “If I had to worry every time I develop a new game, I wouldn’t be able to stand here right now.”

“…”

“Moreover, it’s The Breath we’re talking about here. It’s the best-selling novel you have, and it’s also scheduled to be released in the U.S. I am most confident that it’ll turn into a huge hit. No, not just confident, I will definitely make it happen, not just in Korea but all over the world.”

Nam Gyu-Ho’s words were overflowing with passion and conviction, and it made Ha Jae-Gun gulp in slight fear.

“What do you think? Will you leave it in my hands?” Nam Gyu-Ho urged, his eyes longing for an answer from Ha Jae-Gun as he looked at him with a gentle gaze.

Ha Jae-Gun took a sip of water and calmly said, “Actually, there were offers from two other companies.”

The smile on Nam Gyu-Ho’s face disappeared completely at the news. “Two companies?”

“If I include the mobile game offers, there will be over ten offers. But amongst them, only two had offered to develop MMORPG games. XM Games and Endisoft.”

Nam Gyu-Ho immediately straightened up, turning anxious without his knowing. Ha Jae-Gun wasn’t just a close friend. He was also a writer whom he had business dealings with. Had he let his guard down unknowingly just because he was in a relationship with Ha Jae-Gun’s sister?

“Excuse me, Writer Ha.” Nam Gyu-Ho fixed up his loosened necktie and said in a hurry, “Yes, XM Games and Endisoft are great game developers, I do not deny that. But regardless of what they have offered you, I can do better than them. On top of that, you’ve partnered with us at Nextion for a while now, so you must be familiar with our work style—”

“I’m going to work with you.” Ha Jae-Gun waved his hand, cutting Nam Gyu-Ho off.

“…!” Nam Gyu-Ho’s eyes grew.

Ha Jae-Gun then added, “For The Breath‘s MMORPG game.”

“R-really?”

“Yes. I apologize for cutting you off so abruptly. I just thought that it would be rude of me to just listen to you quietly when I’ve long decided to work with Nextion.”

Haha, my, my…

Mr. Ha, you’re really…” Nam Gyu-Ho laughed, scratching the back of his head. Feeling both happy and embarrassed, he said, “I’m feeling thirsty all of a sudden. They sell dongdong[1] wine here by the glass. Would you like some? Although it’s still relatively early, let’s have some to toast.”

“I can even have a kettle of it.”

Ah, let’s order a kettle then.” Nam Gyu-Ho reached out to press the service button at the end of the table.

However, Ha Jae-Gun blocked him just in time. “I have something to ask as well before we order the wine.”

Ahh, mm… sure.” Nam Gyu-Ho retrieved his hand.

It was time. His fingers started trembling under the table.

“I heard that you’re seeing my sister.” Ha Jae-Gun said, going straight to the point.

Nam Gyu-Ho remained silent as if giving some sort of acknowledgment.

“I apologize for bringing this up. There’s actually no need for me to talk about this, but it’s because she’s very precious to me. She’s getting old, and I earnestly hope that she’ll meet someone nice soon.”

“No, I understand… Yes.”

“I’m not requesting you to do something about it, and I don’t have the right to do so. I just have a question. Director Nam…what are you planning to do with my sister?”

Nam Gyu-Ho was quick-witted, so he instantly understood what Ha Jae-Gun was trying to say. Ha Jae-Gun was afraid that his sister would get hurt if Nam Gyu-Ho was just planning to date her on impulse. Ha Jae-Gun was hoping that Nam Gyu-Ho would break it up with his sister if he had no plans of marrying her so that she could find another man sooner rather than later.

“I’m planning to marry her,” Nam Gyu-Ho replied after a while.

“…!” Ha Jae-Gun was so surprised that he looked up in an instant.

“I’m seeing Ms. Jae-In because I really want to marry her. I am planning to do everything I can to get permission from my father. I will definitely do my best.”

“Thank you….”

Ha Jae-Gun reached out and pressed the service bell, and a kettle of Dongdong wine was served. The two men raised their filled glasses. Their hearts were conveyed to each other through their toast. No further words were needed as they emptied their glasses.

[Ha Jae-Gun’s original novel, Storm and Gale, confirmed for movie adaptation through China’s Teencent Pictures, with lead actors Park Do-Joon and Hong Ye-Seul]

[Ha Jae-Gun’s Storm and Gale book goes into reprint after movie adaptation announcement]

” Jae-Gun hyung, shouldn’t we have a company dinner since your novel is going into reprint again?”

“How do you connect every little thing to a company dinner?”

As the winter season comes, Ha Jae-Gun’s news had taken over the internet by storm once again. Along with the news of the movie adaptation of Storm and Gale, other articles related to that flooded the news and social media as well.

“Hyung, we haven’t had a company dinner in a while. Since you’re almost done with Oscar’s Dungeon, let’s have a company dinner today, please?” Lee Yeon-Woo begged Ha Jae-Gun like a child once more.

Yang Hyun-Kyung, who was working on his novel beside Lee Yeon-Woo, added, “I hope we can have dinner together as well. Min-Ho hyung and Eun-Young noona will be getting married soon and leaving the office, so it’ll soon be harder for all of us to gather.”

Hmm, shall we have one then?” Ha Jae-Gun mumbled, nodding in agreement.

Lee Yeon-Woo then pretended to whine lightly, “Aren’t you too much, hyung? You didn’t listen when I asked but suddenly agreed to it when Hyun-Kyung hyung asked.”

“Then you should be more persuasive with your words. Alright, let’s have a company dinner tonight. It’ll be my treat in commemoration for Storm and Gale.” Ha Jae-Gun agreed readily.

Excited at the news, Lee Yeon-Woo and Yang Hyun-Kyung gave each other a high five. Meanwhile, Jung So-Mi looked up from her drawing and smiled.

Bzzt!

Ha Jae-Gun pulled out his phone and grinned as he looked at the caller ID. He stood up immediately and answered Lee Soo-Hee’s call.

“Why did you call at this hour?”

— I was just calling before heading out for lunch. Have you had yours?

“I’ll be going soon. How are you?”

— I’m good. Oh, I just got off a call with Director Nam.

“Director Nam? What did he say?”

— He wants me to return as soon as possible. He needs to develop a large-scale game but says that I’m the only person fit to head the project.

Lee Soo-Hee chuckled and said,

— And our Writer Ha knows what that game is, right?

Hahaha….

— Why are you laughing? That’s no fun. You don’t like it?

“Of course I do. Why are you asking the obvious?”

— Who do you like better? Me, or The Breath?

“Don’t do this. There are other writers here with me….” Ha Jae-Gun said softly, looking around him.

Lee Soo-Hee then continued mischievously.

— I’m going to drag this out if you don’t give me an answer soon. Me or The Breath?

Ha… Of course, it’s you.”

— What? What about me? You should finish your sentence.

“I… like you more.”

— Hear yourself, you’re so soft. I’ll overlook it this time, but you’re going to get it from me when I get back.

“Just come back soon already.”

— All right. Ah, Deputy Seo is out. I’m going to go for lunch now. Enjoy your lunch, Writer Ha.

“Yeah, let’s talk again in the evening.”

Ha Jae-Gun was about to discuss the company dinner with the others after hanging up, but another call came in.

This time, it was a call from the U.S. agent, Chae Yoo-Jin.

“Hello?”

— Hello, Mr. Ha. This is Chae Yoo-Jin. Hohoho.

“Yes, hello. You sound happy today.” Foll𝑜w current novℯls on nov𝒆lb((in).(com)

— It might be because I had a great meal in Korea. Things have been going well lately, and I’m in a good mood, too~ I called to let you know that the translated version of The Breath is complete. I’ll send it to you via email, so please take a look.

“Thank you. I’ll take a look after lunch.”

— And I’m also in contact with a few other publishers aside from Knobble. The sales volume depends on how powerful the publishers are, aside from things like advanced royalties and distribution of the first prints. Their connections with the media are important as well. In fact, Knobble doesn’t specialize in fantasy novels, so I’m slightly concerned, even though their conditions were great.

“I can seem to imagine how hard an agent’s job is. You’ve been working hard because of me.”

— Don’t mention it; it’s my livelihood as well. You don’t have to thank me for it. I’ll call you again once there’s more progress.

“Thank you. I hope you have a good day, I’ll be waiting for your call.”

***

Beep!

Chae Yoo-Jin got out of the bathtub after the call. While wiping her body dry with a towel, she felt a strange sensation again. She frowned and lifted the toilet cover before sitting down.

Why do I go to the toilet so often these days? Nothing’s coming out either.

After coming out of the bathroom, she opened the fridge out of habit and took some cut oranges. She was only left with one orange after preparing a week’s worth of food.

How did I finish this so quickly? Am I gaining weight recently?

Thinking back carefully, she hadn’t been eating much recently either. Chae Yoo-Jin tilted her head as she went to the sink to start peeling a new orange. The sour scent attracted her, and she began putting a few pieces in her mouth.

Bzzt!

“A phone call always comes in when my hands are dirty,” Chae Yoo-Jin grumbled as she wiped her wet hands. She subconsciously caressed her belly while going to her phone. The caller ID showed Oh Myung-Suk’s name.

“…?” Her hands stiffened. Something struck her as soon as she saw his name. Her mouth slowly opened, and her eyelids slowly opened fully. One of her hands was still caressing her belly.

1. A type of makgeolli?

Chapter 199. What? Dragon Rider? (5)

No way…!

Her limbs trembled. Despite thinking that it was absurd, her chest was heaving violently. The phone was still ringing on the table, with Oh Myung-Suk’s name showing on the screen.

“H-hello?”

— I was about to hang up, seeing how you hadn’t picked up for a while. Are you busy?

“No… Why did you call?”

— I think you’re getting busy with The Breath for a while from now on. You said you’d send me a copy of the translated copy when it’s done, but I haven’t heard from you. Is this because it’s Laugh Book’s novel, and that’s why you’re keeping it confidential from me?

Oh Myung-Suk joked, but Chae Yoo-Jin did not respond to it.

Chae Yoo-Jin hadn’t contacted him ever since she returned to the States, as something had been tugging at her heart after they spent the night together in the hotel. It was also out of consideration for him out of fear that he might feel uncomfortable.

— Hello? Yoo-Jin. Are you listening?

“Y-yeah.”

— You don’t sound good. What happened?

“It’s nothing. I must be exhausted.” Chae Yoo-Jin beat around the bush since Oh Myung-Suk would be able to accept it regardless if it was the truth or not. She very much wanted to hang up the call with him first. Her hand did not leave her belly, and she wanted to uncover the identity of the strange feeling.

— Chae Yoo-Jin.

Hmm?” Another strange feeling came to her. Despite saying that she was tired, Oh Myung-Suk did not hang up and continued the conversation.

— There’s something I want to check with you.

“C-check…?” Was it because of this? Chae Yoo-Jin felt something tug at her belly.

— Yeah.

“What is it…? Tell me.”

Chae Yoo-Jin gulped, waiting anxiously for his answer. Looking back, Oh Myung-Suk had always been quick-witted since she met him at university. His amazing intuition had surprised Chae Yoo-Jin countless times before.

— …Are we really good staying like this?

“…?”

The anxiety that Chae Yoo-Jin ran down her spine disappeared completely. Instead, the emotions that emerged afterward were too overwhelming.

— I just want to confirm that we’re really fine staying like this.

The short line had numerous meanings behind it. No one else would understand him aside from Chae Yoo-Jin, but there wasn’t an answer she could give him yet. The hand that was caressing her belly now wrapped her throbbing forehead. Her boulder-heavy body fell into the chair.

“What do you mean?” Chae Yoo-Jin asked after barely managing to conceal her heavy breathing.

“Are you asking because of that night? Is that why you’re concerned? We’re both adults now, there’s no need to make a fuss over that.”

— Who knows, I’m probably not as cool as you are.

Chae Yoo-Jin chuckled briefly.

“It’s not about that, and like you said, it’s just a one-night stand. Isn’t it common in dramas where lovers who broke up long ago get swept away by the atmosphere and end up spending the night together? That’s how it was. I’ve long forgotten about it.”

— Really?

Oh Myung-Suk’s question made her fume. She couldn’t tell whether she was angry at herself or at him, but she suppressed it and said, “Yes. And even if it wasn’t, are you going to get together with me again?”

— Yoo-Jin….

“How are you going to persuade your father when I’m barren? Oh, or are you going to marry another woman, but you’re going to keep on seeing me whenever you come to the States?”

— Calm down, let’s talk calmly.

“You made me this way. Didn’t I say that I was tired earlier? You would have hung up when I said that before. Why are you bringing this up again when the answer is already there?

— It’s not.

“What…?”

— The answer isn’t fixed.

“What… are you saying…?”

— I’m saying that you’re still the most precious to me.

Chae Yoo-Jin’s eyes were filled with hot tears. She hadn’t cried in a long time while living life ferociously. She had bit her lips to the point of bleeding from the moment she left Korea and stepped on foreign soil. She had decided back then that she would erase all the pathetic and sad past.

Her steeled mindset, which was as solid as an iron wall, came crumbling down.

“I….” Chae Yoo-Jin continued while letting out a hot breath. “Can I… call you again?”

— Sure, I’ll wait for you.

Chae Yoo-Jin hung up the call and went to her car, starting the engine. She was heading to the supermarket by the high street. She had to confirm it with her own eyes, and she had to do it in order to give Oh Myung-Suk an answer.

Around thirty minutes later, Chae Yoo-Jin returned home and burst into tears as she squatted at the end of the bathtub. Another fine line had appeared, but the sky had crumbled for her.

The long years of sorrow she had endured didn’t stop until daybreak.

[Gyeoja Bathhouse, number 1 horror movie in Korea, with over 6.5 million audiences in China]

[Nextion smiling, thanks to word of mouth on the movie, sales of the game have also increased by over twenty percent]

[Teencent Pictures, distributing Gyeoja Bathhouse in China: Our thirst is unabated, will keep working hard to maintain the number of screenings]

[China’s top actress, Yang Ying confirmed as female lead for movie Storm and Gale, cast with China market in mind?]

[What changed with Yang Ying’s casting? The difference between the original and movie scenario heard through Director Yoon Tae-Sung]

— Hey, Ha Jae-Gun, Beijing is no joke. People are queuing to watch Gyeoja Bathhouse. Can you believe it? It’s totally different from what was reported on the news in Korea. You should see this for yourself.

“You’re fussing too much, Do-Joon. How is it seeing Yang Ying in the flesh?”

— Hmm, tell… she’s not photogenic.

“Seeing how the chic Do-Joon had given such a remark, she must be horrifyingly pretty. Anyway, be careful and do well in the filming.”

After hanging up, Ha Jae-Gun felt the cold and put on a cardigan. He closed the window that was opened to ventilate the place and heard Lee Yeon-Woo talking from behind him, “Is that from Do-Joon hyung?”

“Yeah, I think he’s just focused on Gyeoja Bathhouse’s performance when he’s supposed to be there for filming.”

“What did he say about Yang Ying? Is she really that pretty?”

“It seems like it, hearing what he said. He said she isn’t photogenic.”

Yang Ying was a Hong Kong stress in her 20s with both beauty and great acting skills. After shining in TV dramas for several years, she finally stepped onto the silver screen debut with Storm and Gale.

Yang Ying was cast as the female lead’s close friend and colleague, working as a karaoke helper. Her character also appeared in the original novel, but it had been changed from a Korean to a Chinese in the movie. The character divorced her Korean husband and became a karaoke helper.

“Is she really that pretty? You seem to be agreeing with him.”

“Enough talking and go work on King of Objection.” Ha Jae-Gun strangled Lee Yeon-Woo in retaliation for his joke.

Actually, Ha Jae-Gun did not oppose Yang Ying’s casting when he was informed at first. Rather, he agreed to it after seeing her acting skills through the dramas she had appeared in. Her expressions, which perfectly expressed sorrow and pain, fit quite nicely with the character she was cast for in the original novel.

Furthermore, Teencent Pictures was producing Storm and Gale. It was natural for them to also consider producing it with the local Chinese market in mind. Plus, only the character’s ethnicity was changed, so it didn’t affect the overall plot much.

I hope Ms. Ye-Seul doesn’t get overwhelmed.‘ Ha Jae-Gun was worried. Yang Ying’s role in Storm and Gale was close enough to be considered a female lead.

However, the female lead was still, without a doubt, Hong Ye-Seul. She had become a hot topic in Gyeoja Bathhouse after acting as a gangster high school girl. She threw the internet into an uproar after becoming the scene stealer of the movie.

In addition, scene stealers were known to draw more attention than the main characters in the shows.

However, there was no guarantee that she could achieve the same results in Storm and Gale.

Good luck, Ms. Ye-Seul. Believe in yourself.’

Ha Jae-Gun thought to himself while looking in China’s general direction.

He would never call her on any personal matters from now on.

“Another year has passed again.”

“Yeah, it’s December now when I came to my senses. I didn’t do much this year; how could it end so soon?”

“You did well this year. Let’s live next year to the fullest like this year as well.”

Ha Jae-Gun patted Lee Yeon-Woo’s shoulder, consoling the latter.

Lee Yeon-Woo smiled shyly and rubbed under his nose, and then he returned to typing on his keyboard.

Bzzt!

“Yes, President Kwon.”

— You picked up immediately. What are you doing on the phone?

“No, I was on a call earlier and still had my phone in my hand. Please speak.”

— I’m calling to say that I’ve received a few documents regarding The Breath from Ms. Chae Yoo-Jin, and one of the offers from the publishers caught my attention.

“Really? Which publisher is it from?”

— They’re called Open House… They are a relatively small publisher, according to her, when compared to larger publishers like Knobble or Scholastic, but….

Kwon Tae-Won trailed off. The sound of flipping pages could be heard.

— But their proposal is astounding. They gave comments in detail from the first volume onward, which could amount to a full novel combined.

“That many comments?”

— Yes. Their sincerity is astonishing; they even marked out all the parts that would not work out well in the States. Of course, they also provided ways to improve. On top of that, I think they even flew over to L.A.

“L.A.? The employees from that publisher?”

— The Breath originated from there, anyway. They checked the text version of it and to see the readers’ response as well, I think?

Hahaha…

Ha Jae-Gun burst into laughter in bewilderment.

Kwon Tae-Won chuckled on the other side of the line and continued,

— Ms. Chae Yoo-Jin also couldn’t quite decide. They are quite reliable in the genre novel market, but somehow, they don’t have any representative novels, so they aren’t as popular as the others. I’ll send you the documents, so please take a look.

“I understand. I’ll take a look immediately.”

Ha Jae-Gun hung up and returned to his seat, accessing the web browser. He clicked into his inbox while stroking Rika, who had climbed onto his lap, and saw the email from Kwon Tae-Won.

Review documents and proposal from Open House.

Kwon Tae-Won was right. The attachment was over 120 pages long. It included detailed suggestions from the first volume of The Breath all the way to the last volume.

Ah, Soo-Hee, please come back quickly…!

The document from Open House was fully in English. Ha Jae-Gun wrapped his throbbing forehead as he focused on the text. It contained lots of technical terms that he felt like he was deciphering it rather than interpreting it.

“Jae-Gun hyung, are you not going for lunch?”

“Something came up, so you can go have lunch with Hyun-Kyung,” Ha Jae-Gun said, not taking his eyes off the screen.

The two took the hint and left quietly for lunch.

This is incredible, really….‘ Ha Jae-Gun exclaimed just as he read around half of the document.

The opinion did not touch the foundation of the novel, but it was written fully from the ordinary American’s perspective. It had accurately poked the areas from the local market’s perspective.

This is astonishing.’ Ha Jae-Gun was extremely touched.

It was still unsure whether they would end up signing a contract for the novel or not, so who would provide such an in-depth opinion? At the end of the document, Ha Jae-Gun saw an afterword from the president of Open House.

I would love to meet you and discuss the opinions I have written here. We at Open House are also prepared to meet you in Korea whenever you are available. Thank you for allowing us to read such wonderful work. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Bzzt!

Ha Jae-Gun’s phone rang once more, and Chae Yoo-Jin’s name showed on the screen.

Ha Jae-Gun took his eyes off the screen and answered the call.

“Yes, Ms. Yoo-Jin.”

— Hello, I’m unsure if you have heard from President Kwon yet, but Open House….

“I’m reading it now.” Ha Jae-Gun gripped his phone tighter, and he smiled. He recalled smiling like this when he first met Kwon Tae-Won. It was a smile that a writer would make upon getting to know an editor-in-chief who had recognized the potential of their work.

Chapter 200. What? Dragon Rider? (6)

“They’ve really put in tremendous effort and sincerity in the comments. I’m astonished.” Ha Jae-Gun replied as he looked down at Rika, making eye contact.

His nose scrunched emotionally at the American editor’s review that traveled from across the ocean.

Although he knew nothing much about Open House, it didn’t matter much to him now. He was only deeply grateful to them for reminding him what was more important to a writer than the royalties.

— I was quite surprised as well. Um… I’m not sure how much you’ve heard from President Kwon, but Open House is a…

“A small-sized company?”

— Compared to Knobble and Scholastic, they are around a thirtieth of those companies’ size, and their sales last year were a little short of $60 million. It’s not a small amount, but it’s not that big either.

Chae Yoo-Jin let out a short sigh and continued,

— And there’s one other thing. I didn’t send the proposal to Open House first.

“Who did…?”

— If it wasn’t me, then there’s one and only answer. They contacted me first. They expressed huge interest in The Breath. I had a call with their editor-in-chief, and he was extremely passionate about signing The Breath. I was really surprised.

“What are your opinions on this, Ms. Yoo-Jin?” Ha Jae-Gun asked. He stood up from his seat and headed to the coffeemaker.

Rika and Nun-Sol followed and flanked him like his personal bodyguards.

“They are a publishing company that you, as an agent, haven’t put into your consideration after all. But you still sent me their proposal after they contacted you first. I would like to know what made you decide to do this.”

— That…

“Are you viewing them positively?” Ha Jae-Gun asked, seemingly certain of Chae Yoo-Jin’s thoughts.

Chae Yoo-Jin let out a soft sigh over the phone.

— In certain ways, yes. Open House is a publishing company that I personally like. They typically release paperback books, and they have many interesting books in their library. They take in all kinds of genres, from fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and even horror.

“I see.”

— It might be a buck-passing of responsibility. Normally, I will filter out publishers whom I’m still sitting on the fence on, but I couldn’t do that with Open House. So I wanted to hear from both you and President Kwon…

“I understand. You don’t have to explain further.”

Ha Jae-Gun returned to his seat with a hot cup of coffee. A new email address was added to his contact book, with the name Open House.

“Why don’t you open tender for a price you are comfortable with, Writer Ha?”

“Tender?”

“Yes, since the competition will be quite fierce. There’s not only Knobble and Scholastic; there’s also other publishing brands affiliated with Wizardry Pictures sending their proposals trying to produce movies as well.

“We would also be able to obtain better conditions from them instead of what they have offered to us individually.”

Hmm…

Two men sat across from each other at a table facing the window of a cafe located along the streets of the city center lined with old trees.

Kwon Tae-Won and Ha Jae-Gun wore worried looks as if they had agreed to look worried beforehand. They were here to discuss Open House’s offer.

“To be honest, I thought President Kwon would agree to this.” Ha Jae-Gun rubbed his hands. There was heating within the cafe, but it was taking a while for his body to warm up as they had just entered the cafe.

“I would fantasize about such things as a writer, but… I felt their sincerity while reading their proposal. It’ll be slightly foolish to say it this way, but that’s how I felt.” Ha Jae-Gun looked down and mumbled, “It’s like when I first met you.”

“…”

“You recognized my work. Despite my work being a mess and not making it up into the ranks at all, you said you liked my work because of how honest it was and proposed to work on it together… I’ve said this countless times, but I was so touched that day that I cried alone at home.”

Uh, Writer Ha…” Kwon Tae-Won groaned lightly as he took off his glasses.

He massaged his eyes and temples thoroughly for a while before putting his glasses back on. With an earnest tone, he said, “Your situation has changed a lot since then.”

“Changed?”

“You’ve long escaped from the anxiety of wondering if your next novel would sell 2,000 copies. You’re now at the stage of deciding the next steps for your novel and how many copies should be in the first print; which countries should you go ahead and release your novel in first, or should you do a movie or drama adaptation first?”

“President Kwon, I’m not referring to that…”

“I understand what you’re talking about; that’s why I’m telling you this,” Kwon Tae-Won said with an unusually firm tone. “I’ve worked with you for the longest and across the most number of your novels, Writer Ha. How would I not know your feelings?”

Ha Jae-Gun sucked on his straw silently. He was enjoying his favorite iced coffee despite the cold weather outside.

“Let’s assume that you’ve written a new fantasy novel under your pseudonym Poongchun-Yoo. And you’re with a small publishing firm like HaeTae Media back when you were still a rookie. Will you be willing to sign your next novel with them?”

“If their editor-in-chief is someone like you, I’ll do it,” Ha Jae-Gun replied without hesitation.

Kwon Tae-Won frowned immediately and slapped his palm to his forehead. “I’m sorry. I think I gave you the wrong example… How should I explain this…”

Kwon Tae-Won agonized over it so much that he even messed up his hair. Ha Jae-Gun did not rush the man and only waited patiently with a smile on his face.

Haa…” Kwon Tae-Won then leaned back and let out a long sigh.

He realized that it was hard to persuade Ha Jae-Gun once he had made up his mind. He spaced out at the ceiling for a while, and then he looked back at Ha Jae-Gun.

“If so, let’s meet them first before making a decision.”

“Thank you, President Kwon, for your understanding.”

“They said it themselves that they’re willing to visit Korea. Though I hope that they won’t come at all.” The two of them burst into laughter at the same time.

Kwon Tae-Won smiled bitterly, like the taste of his coffee.

“Since I’ve failed to persuade you, I’ll be honest. I liked their proposal as well. I did feel their sincerity toward The Breath.”

“That’s a relief.”

“I read their feedback overnight and couldn’t find a single part to refute. I even asked the opinions of my friends who had migrated to the States, and they found it to be very objective.”

“I thought the same as well with my limited English skills. I am confident that The Breath would perform much better in the U.S. if I revised it according to their feedback. That’s why I would really like to meet them once, regardless if we sign the contract with them or not.”

Kwon Tae-Won nodded and clapped his hands softly. “I’ll convey the conclusion we’ve just had to them today, then. I’ll try to schedule a meeting with them as soon as possible.”

“Okay. I’m getting hungry now; shall we go for a meal?”

Wow, it’s already past 1 p.m. What would you like to have?”

“Since you’ve compromised a lot, I’ll let you choose the menu for today.”

The two men left the cafe, and the cold December wind blew into them, but the two did not feel as cold with their clothes buttoned up tightly.

They were all smiles as they walked down the cold street.

“You’re coming to Korea?”

Water was dripping from Oh Myung-Suk’s body as he stood, holding the phone to his ear. He had just finished showering after returning from work. He answered Chae Yoo-Jin’s call immediately.

“So it’s because of Mr. Ha’s novel? The schedule isn’t fixed yet? Yeah, so which company is it? Open House? Hmm, I haven’t heard of them before.” Oh Myung-Suk said as he wedged his phone between his ear and shoulder, putting on his clothes.

Just then, dull footsteps from the hallway could be heard from the bathroom. Realizing that it was his father, Oh Myung-Suk whispered in a hurry, “Yoo-Jin, I’m sorry, but I’m currently at home. I’ll call you again, okay? Rest well.”

Oh Myung-Suk hung up and put his phone into his gown’s pocket. It was difficult to talk on the phone with his father around, even if it were business-related topics.

Oh Myung-Sun returned to his room and changed his clothes. He thought for a while before standing up. He headed slowly to his father’s study, there was something he had to tell his father. Of course, it was about Chae Yoo-Jin.

Gulp.

His audible gulp rang loudly in his own ears.

Knock, knock.

Oh Myung-Suk suppressed his nervousness and knocked lightly on the door. The sound of throat clearing was his permission to enter the study.

“Why are you still awake at this hour, Father?”

“I was struggling to revise my novel that I lost track of time.” Oh Tae-Jin massaged the back of his neck and groaned in exhaustion.

Oh Myung-Suk went behind his father and looked at the tabletop, his eyes widening in surprise.

“Is this Mr. Ha’s review?”

“Yes, he sent it immediately after that day.” However, Oh Tae-Jin’s hands covered the document with his thick hands.

Oh Myung-Suk could feel the shamefulness that clouded his father’s stiff face.

“It doesn’t look good…” Oh Tae-Jin said as he looked at the light from the lamp in a daze.

“He said that he felt like it was written entirely by someone else when the novel reached its peak. The writing style was heterogeneous, and the text had lost its vitality. The disparity was so severe that even he was surprised…”

“Can I take a look?” Oh Myung-Suk asked for permission, gulping.

Oh Tae-Jin willingly handed over Ha Jae-Gun’s review to his eldest son. He had never shown it to anyone else yet.

“…!” Oh Myung-Suk’s face began changing as he read through the five-page document. As expected, Ha Jae-Gun was relentless with his review when it was about novels. There wasn’t a single area of concession or nice words put in it.

Was it this serious…?

’ Oh Myung-Suk tilted his head momentarily, and then he realized that he had to reflect on the fact that he had to have been biased since it was his father’s work. He could have done it without realizing it.

Father…!’ Oh Myung-Suk stared at his father as if the latter were pitiful.

Oh Tae-Jin smoked quietly with his head looking down at the ground. Oh Myung-Suk could tell how painful it had to have been for his father. Even he could tell how much effort his father had put in on this novel. Oh Myung-Suk could only stay quiet, as he didn’t know what to say.

After a while, Oh Tae-Jin pulled the ashtray at the end of the table to him. He put out the cigarette after a few puffs and said, “You don’t have to be so worried. I just have to edit it again.”

“Cheer up, Father,” Oh Myung-Suk consoled while massaging his father’s shoulders lightly.

Oh Tae-Jin put his hand on Oh Myung-Suk’s hand. As always, his father’s touch felt reliable and warm.

I should tell him next time.’ Oh Myung-Suk knew he couldn’t bring up Chae Yoo-Jin at this time. He slowly withdrew his hand and bowed, “Please rest early, Father. I will be heading back to my room now.”

“Okay, you should rest early, too—Ah, Myung-Suk!”

Oh Myung-Suk stopped in his tracks and turned around. “Is there anything else, father?”

“I’ve totally forgotten about it because I was preoccupied with my novel. You remember the youngest daughter of President Kim from Daemyung Group?”

“…” No reply came from Oh Myung-Suk, but he knew the individual his father was referring to, and he also knew what his father was getting at.

“I’ll be straightforward; meet her once.”

“Father, I still…”

“How dare you say that at your age? I can’t wait for you any longer. You’re the eldest son, and you will succeed the OongSung Group in the future.”

“I know that, but I’m not prepared—”

“I’ve already arranged a meeting for you,” Oh Tae-Jin said, waving his hand in dismissal.

Oh Myung-Suk’s eyes were slowly losing focus. “…I can’t.”

Those two words broke the silence and pervaded the dark study.

“I… can’t do that, Father.”

“WHY?!” Oh Tae-Jin stood up in anger. He strode to Oh Myung-Suk and pointed a finger at Oh Myung-Suk’s face. “Why not?! Tell me why! I’ll listen, so tell me why! But if your reason is what I have in mind, then return to your room immediately!”

“Father…!”

Oh Tae-Jin’s lips were trembling in anger. He growled deeply, “I’ve only slapped you once throughout your entire life! Don’t make me do it again for the same reason! Do you understand?!”

“…”

“Why aren’t you answering me?! Yes or no!”

“Father, I mean it, I really love Yoo-…”

Slap!

Oh Myung-Suk’s glasses flew off his face. His head had jerked to the side, and his cheek burned red.

“I don’t want to hear it, leave!” Oh Tae-Jin pointed to the door.

Oh Myung-Suk bit his lips and bowed deeply in silence. Oh Myung-Suk staggered to pick up his glasses as tears started dripping down Oh Tae-Jin’s eyes.

Creaaak.

Oh Myung-Suk did not return to his room but toward the living room. There was no way he could sleep without the help of alcohol tonight. As he turned the corner in the hallway and entered the living room, he saw Oh Myung-Hoon.

“…”

“…”

The brothers looked at each other for a while in silence.

Oh Myung-Hoon looked away first.

Oh Myung-Suk pulled out a bottle of tequila and a glass from the cupboard and asked, “Did you hear it from here?”

“What do you think?” Oh Myung-Hoon responded, and then he took a sip of his vodka in hand. “I can probably hear his voice even in New York.”

“Father has always been so loud.” Oh Myung-Suk took a seat across from Oh Myung-Hoon on the sofa.

While Oh Myung-Suk was pondering what to talk about with his brother, Oh Myung-Hoon asked casually, “I won’t give up if I were you.”

“…What?”

“If you love her so much, shouldn’t you win her and get father’s blessings at all costs? Yoo-Jin noona loves you, too. What’s wrong with being barren? You guys can always adopt a child to resolve the issue.”

“Let’s not talk about this now.”

Oh Myung-Suk drank his tequila straight.

Oh Myung-Hoon snorted and stood up. “Do whatever you want. I’m not going to live like you did.”

“Really?”

“Pull yourself together. Otherwise, I’m going to inherit the OongSung Group at this rate. Bye,” Oh Myung-Hoon said coldly.

As soon as Oh Myung-Hoon disappeared up the stairs to the second floor, Oh Myung-Suk mumbled quietly to himself, “I’d love that to happen…”

The brown liquid gushed and filled the glass. Oh Myung-Suk leaned backward and downed the entire glass down his throat.

Chae Yoo-Jin’s face surfaced in his mind as the fragrance of the strong alcohol wafted in the air. He reached out with his hand, but he couldn’t touch her face at all.
