Big Life Chapter 211-220

Chapter 211. What? Dragon Rider? (17)

“Are they only transferring Writer Jeon Bong-Yi’s royalties now?” asked the new employee sitting beside Deputy Lee. Deputy Lee had just finished calculating the royalties due for Writer Jeon Bong-Yi and threw a glance at Ma Jong-Goo and Park Kyung-Soo’s way before signaling the newcomer to leave the office together.

“Do you want to have a coffee together?”

“Thank you.”

Deputy Lee and the newcomer took a can of coffee each and went up to the rooftop. He put a cigarette stick in his mouth and said, “Mr. Dae-Woo, if you want to work here longer, just go with the flow.”

“Pardon?”

“This is how we do things here at Haetae Media.” Deputy Lee turned to look at the newcomer and laughed self-mockingly, “It’s been two years since I joined the company, and do you know what I’ve realized while working here?”

“I-I don’t know…?”

“I learned that writers are much more powerless than expected. Nine out of ten of them don’t even complain when they don’t receive their full settlement, and this applies more toward writers who are not as popular. They do not know much of anything else aside from writing. If they know that they can’t really do much about it, and it’s going to be bothersome to deal with it, they wouldn’t deal with it at all.”

“Even if they don’t get paid according to what is rightfully their portion?”

“Yes.” Deputy Lee replied before adding, “And this company takes full advantage of that characteristic.”

“But… wouldn’t there be at least one writer who would threaten to sue the company?”

“Like I said, the company only takes advantage of those pushover writers. Plus, their royalties don’t amount to much. You read the statement I tallied for Jeon Bong-Yi’s settlement, right?”

“Yes, that’s why I thought, why didn’t the company just pay it out when it’s better for the company image and for the future?”

Deputy Lee then looked away and stared into space with a grin. “Mr. Dae-Woo isn’t looking at the big picture. Do you know how many novels we have published until today at Haetae Media?”

“Huh? Um… maybe around a thousand?”

Deputy Lee snorted. “Over 3,500 novels. A whopping 3,500 novels. How many of those pushover writers like Jeon Bong-Yi do you think contribute to that number?”

“…”

“Small change gathered together totals to a huge amount of money, which in turn fills the pockets of our CEO.”

Ah… I understand what you mean.” Deputy Lee finished smoking out a stick in no time and took out a second stick to smoke before continuing. “Most writers are poor, and they wouldn’t be able to make ends meet if they only relied on writing. There are countless of them who have to work part-time or even take a full-time job, reducing their amount of sleep while writing on the side.”

“Yes, Writer Ko Dae-Geun, who is the first writer I’m overseeing in my life, is also working night shifts at a PC cafe.”

“The biggest issue with poor writers is that they don’t have the luxury to dream. So the moment they realize that they can’t receive their well-deserved royalties, they wouldn’t think of filing a lawsuit or consulting a lawyer. The best they could do is call the company and beg for their royalties no matter how much it amounts to.”

“Mm…”

“Of course, they would beg the company to transfer their full portion of the royalties they were promised. But isn’t it funny? Getting enough money for living expenses is the most urgent, so whatever that should be right or wrong becomes an issue for tomorrow.”

Deputy Lee took a few puffs from his cigarette, and then she showed a look of disgust. He rubbed his teary eyes and continued. “What’s more ridiculous was Department Head Ma’s answer whenever he answers their calls. He would ask them to sign their next novel with us, and if they give us the manuscripts, the company will then transfer the overdue royalties.”

“Oh my god…! The overdue royalties aren’t pawns.”

“I had the same reaction when I first joined the company as well.” Deputy Lee finished the remaining coffee in the can and threw it into the trash bin nearby. As she turned around slowly, Deputy Lee said, “I didn’t understand it, but I came to accept it gradually. I am a salaried employee, after all, but I’m slowly growing exhausted with this situation. I have also decided to stop understanding it.”

“What do you mean?”

“I tendered my resignation. I’m working until next week.”

“Deputy Lee…?!”

“I stayed for a while longer just to teach you, Mr. Dae-Woo. Let’s have some drinks one of these days.”

“Yes… Okay.” Dae-Woo grew depressed and followed behind Deputy Lee. He was saddened to hear that the first and only person he had grown close to in Haetae Media since he had joined was leaving soon.

“Are you going to rest for a while after your resignation?”

“There’s no time for me to rest since I have to pay for my rent. I have already found another job, I passed the interview.”

Ah, so you’re changing companies. Where are you going to work at?”

“Laugh Books.”

“Laugh Books?! That same publishing company that Writer Poongchun-Yoo is at?”

“You’re too loud, Mr. Dae-Woo. I’ll share with you another time, but please keep it a secret to the company for now.”

As they went back down to their office, they saw a few cigarette butts thrown on the ground in the emergency stairway. Those were traces of people who had found it bothersome to climb all the way to the rooftop to smoke and had thrown them carelessly to the ground.

As usual, Deputy Lee bent down to pick all of them up. As he did, he couldn’t help but wish that his world would become slightly better than before.

***

“A female as the main character of a fusion fantasy novel is quite… unusual.”

“Is that what everyone thinks?”

“Well, the majority of those readers are men, so fantasy novels with female main characters don’t sell.”

The three new writers said in unison. Jeon Bong-Yi nodded, looking dejected. “Why don’t you stick to romance novels?”

“I’ve been writing romance novels since my debut, and strangely, I’m finding it more boring than before. Especially the one I’m writing now. Plus, I originally like fantasy novels too.”

Just then, the door to the bedroom opened, and Ha Jae-Gun stepped out. The new writers turned around to see him, and one of them asked, “Writer Ha, novels with female main characters don’t sell well, right?”

“Novels with female main characters?”

“Yeah, fantasy stories with female main characters. Writer Jeon Bong-Yi was contemplating what to write for her new novel.”

“It is hard to sell,” Ha Jae-Gun said as he headed to the coffee machine. While the others nodded in agreement, Ha Jae-Gun continued. “But it’s more important that you write something you like. I personally feel that it’s marketable as long as you enjoy writing it.”

Their opinions started off the same, but the conclusion was different. Jeon Bong-Yi looked at Ha Jae-Gun’s back as he made his coffee. Soon, a bright smile grew on her face—an idea had already popped into her head.

Bzzt!

Her phone vibrated in her pocket. Jeon Bong-Yi took out her phone, her eyes almost popping out as she saw the screen. It was a notification from the bank about a new bank transfer to her account.

Deposit: 318,420 won

Balance: 2,611,243 won

Haetae Media

Wh-what happened…?’ The sudden notification got Jeon Bong-Yi flustered.

She was certain that the amount was the royalties for the ebook of her debut novel that she hadn’t received for a while. Her debut novel didn’t do well, so the amount she was due to receive wasn’t that much. However, money was no longer important to her at the moment. Haetae Media had been turning a blind eye to her requests whenever she asked, so how come they suddenly decided to pay her due royalties?

“Writer Jeon, what’s wrong? Did something bad happen?”

“N-No. It’s not that…” Jeon Bong-Yi trailed off and looked up. Her eyes began to blur as she shifted her gaze to Ha Jae-Gun. She then recalled the night when she shared her concerns over dinner at the sushi restaurant.

Did Writer Ha…?

Back then, Ha Jae-Gun only said to dig in and not elaborate on how he would help her, so Jeon Bong-Yi had forgotten all about it. After a while of thinking, Jeon Bong-Yi stood up. She was about to ask Ha Jae-Gun about it, but the doorbell rang.

“Huh? Who is it?”

Baek Sung-Hyun stood up and went for the door. Everyone working in the office knew the password to the door, so the doorbell rarely rang.

“Who is it?”

“Excuse me, is this Writer Ha’s office? I’m from Haetae Media.”

The voice coming through the intercom belonged to Ma Jong-Goo, and Jeon Bong-Yi froze on the spot. Even Ha Jae-Gun looked at the door when he was about to take a sip of his coffee.

“Writer Ha, what shall we do?”

“…Open the door.”

Baek Sung-Hyun hurriedly opened the door at Ha Jae-Gun’s instructions, revealing Ma Jong-Goo and Park Kyung-Soo at the door. The two of them had boxes of beverages in both their hands.

Hehehe, hello. I’m Department Head Ma Jong-Goo from Haetae Media.”

“I’m Deputy Park Kyung-Soo. Is Writer Ha around?”

“Yes, he is…” Sung-Hyun answered and stepped aside for the two men to enter.

Ma Jong-Goo spotted Jeon Bong-Yi staring at him blankly and grinned. “Haha! How have you been, Writer Jeon Bong-Yi? Aigoo, I didn’t know you joined Writer Ha’s office. You should have dropped me a call.”

“…” Jeon Bong-Yi found his words so ridiculous that she almost scoffed loudly. She had called them so many times about her debut novel; what a liar.

Aigoo, there are so many writers in this office. But where is Writer Ha…” Ma Jong-Goo trailed off when he spotted Ha Jae-Gun between the kitchen and living room, expressionless. “Hello, Writer Ha!”

Ma Jong-Goo bowed down ninety degrees, and Park Kyung-Soo followed suit.

“I’ve contacted you a few times, wanting to meet you, but I couldn’t reach you at all. I was curious about how you were doing; that’s why I came here without notifying you. Hahaha,

” said Ma Jong-Goo.

Ha Jae-Gun remained expressionless. Ma Jong-Goo was right. He had indeed called Ha Jae-Gun once or twice every month, but Ha Jae-Gun had ignored all of them, as he had thought he had no further reason to come in contact with them again.

“Has Writer Jeon Bong-Yi’s matter been resolved?” Ha Jae-Gun said, going straight to the point.

Ma Jong-Goo’s smile disappeared immediately and nodded nervously. “Yes, um… It’s been resolved. I will make sure that we won’t sell her novel by mistake anywhere else again.”

“You said it was a mistake?”

“Yes, um… we are overseeing a lot of writers, so there are some difficulties when handling their novels collectively. So mistakes like these happen from time to time.”

“A mistake, you say…” Ha Jae-Gun mumbled as he looked down at his cup. His cold voice echoed through the office like his coffee losing its heat. “Mistakes do happen since publishing companies are run by humans. But if those mistakes happen to several books every month, then doesn’t that mean that there’s a huge problem?”

“Writer Ha, that’s…”

“From my understanding, only Haetae Media has such issues in South Korea. So why does this happen only in Haetae Media? Why are the writers badmouthing Haetae Media everywhere in the online writers’ community?”

Mm…!” Ma Jong-Goo could only grunt. Park Kyung-Soo could only stand beside him quietly like a mute.

“Deputy Park Kyung-Soo.”

“Y-yes! Writer Ha, please speak.”

“You said it in the email you sent me last week, saying that I’ve become a famous writer and that you feel fearful to send over a new novel proposal.”

Park Kyung-Soo gulped as he remained silent. He could not guess why Ha Jae-Gun had brought this up.

Ha Jae-Gun then said, “This isn’t the reason why I’m not signing with Haetae Media. You should know my character by now.”

“I-I’m sorry. I apologize for everything, Writer Ha.” Park Kyung-Soo dropped his head, beads of cold sweat trickling down his body.

Ma Jong-Goo couldn’t look up as well, also hesitating to speak. All the new writers were watching how his hands were trembling while retreating his steps.

I never thought I’d see the loud Department Head Ma like this…?’ Jeon Bong-Yi could not believe her eyes upon seeing Ma Jong-Goo’s reaction. The client on the contract, who should always be the writer, had always felt like it was Ma Jong-Goo instead. But watching how he bowed his head down like a sinner before the judge here, who was Ha Jae-Gun, made everything feel surreal.

“I could make this issue public, too.” Ha Jae-Gun seethed.

“…!” Ma Jong-Goo and Park Kyung-Soo instantly turned pale as they looked up.

“Please let the President know; tell him not to bother the writers anymore. I believe you have understood my words.”

“…!”

“Why are you both not answering? Department Head Ma? Deputy Park?”

“Y-yes, Mr. Ha.”

“I-I understand. Yes, I understand.”

“Please leave then. The writers have to continue writing their novels.”

Ma Jong-Goo wiped the sweat off his forehead and looked up carefully. “U-um… Writer Ha. I was just wondering if we could treat you to lunch tod—”

He couldn’t finish his sentence.

Ha Jae-Gun had emptied his cup of coffee at one go and held it in his mouth. With a deep frown, he glared silently at Ma Jong-Goo.

Ma Jong-Goo stammered, “N-no. Writer Ha. I apologize for showing up out of the blue. W-We will take our leave now.”

“Please take care of yourself, and I hope you’ll k-keep producing good novels. I-I’ll contact you again.”

Ma Jong-Goo and Park Kyung-Soo turned around, fear-stricken. After the two men left the office with tails tucked between their legs, Ha Jae-Gun finally swallowed the coffee held in his mouth.

“T-thank you… Writer Ha…!” Jeon Bong-Yi exclaimed, her hands clasped together before her chest. Her teary eyes were filled with gratitude.

“You’re not faultless, Writer Jeon Bong-Yi.”

“Yes, I will keep that in mind. I will make sure to read through the contracts carefully in the future.”

Ha Jae-Gun smiled faintly and picked up his coat. He was supposed to have a meeting with Nam Gyu-Ho today, making the final decision about the game adaptation for The Breath. Of course, Soo-Hee would be joining the meeting.

“I’ll be going first. Good luck with your writing, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Only the four new writers were left behind after Ha Jae-Gun’s departure. However, none of them moved from their spots after a while, they only stared at the door blankly.

“What are you all doing?” Jeon Bong-Yi broke the silence first. “Writer Ha said to work hard on our novels. We should quickly finish our work and head out for lunch, too.”

Everyone else nodded in agreement and returned to their own seats. Their newly found motivation got everyone typing away on their keyboards at full speed.

One day, I too will…!’ They hadn’t said it out loud, but all of them held the same thoughts. They steeled their resolve to always be confident in spite of whatever ridiculous treatment they might receive in the future.

On the other hand, Ha Jae-Gun was driving toward the Nextion headquarters. Never in his wildest dreams would he imagine that his words and actions today be recorded in the history of the genre novel industry.

It was winter, but the weather felt relatively warm today.

Chapter 212. What? Dragon Rider? (18)

“I look forward to working with you this time as well.”

Ha Jae-Gun stamped his seal on the contract.

Nam Gyu-Ho smiled and reached his hand out, which Ha Jae-Gun grabbed and shared a handshake. Everyone on the planning team, including Lee Soo-Hee, sent a round of applause for the moment when the game adaptation for The Breath was finalized. As mentioned by Nam Gyu-Ho himself, it would take Nextion two years at the minimum to develop the game.

He needed that much time to paint the big picture he had in mind.

“I’ll try my best to ensure that we’ll be able to hold a production press conference in the next six months.”

“I’m not in a hurry at all. It’s fine even if it takes ten years, so I hope it comes out exactly as how you have imagined it to be, Director Nam.”

As everyone else left the meeting room, Ha Jae-Gun, Lee Soo-Hee, and Nam Gyu-Ho were left in the room. Nam Gyu-Ho took a sip of his coffee and said, “I haven’t had the chance to say it before, but congratulations to both of you.”

Ha Jae-Gun grinned and nodded.

Lee Soo-Hee looked down with her face flushed and twiddled with her fingers.

“I read it in an article by Weekly Trends. Is it true?”

“Yes, we’re planning to get married mid-next year.” Ha Jae-Gun revealed that much information and then thought that he would prefer it if his sister could get married before him. However, he couldn’t say that in front of Nam Gyu-Ho.

“Director Nam, I think I’ll have to get going first.”

“Let’s have dinner together one of these days. I’ll drop you a call.”

Lee Soo-Hee followed Ha Jae-Gun as he turned around to leave the meeting room. The distance of the corridor leading up to the elevator wasn’t long. With a regretful look, Lee Soo-Hee said, “I’ll send you down to the car park.”

“No, it’s okay. We’ll meet again later in the evening anyway.”

“No, I’m going to send you all the way to the car park.”

Lee Soo-Hee eventually took the elevator with Ha Jae-Gun. She pressed the button to B1 and said, “What else is left? Movie? Anime?”

“Huh?”

The Breath. The novel is out, the game will be developed, and unlike Korea, the U.S. said that they could produce a movie adaptation for it as well. If the novel does well in the U.S., the movie will be underway soon, right?”

“Was Team leader Lee Soo-Hee always this ahead of herself?”

As Ha Jae-Gun opened his car door, Lee Soo-Hee had just recalled something and a shiver traveled throughout her entire body. “Jae-Gun, why don’t we have dinner at your house later?”

They had actually agreed to meet at Lee Soo-Hee’s house for dinner instead of going to Ha Jae-Gun’s house. But she suddenly recalled that she had forgotten to lock the door to her study before she left the house this morning.

“Huh? Why? Didn’t you say you have everything prepared for dinner already?”

“Yes, but…. I just thought that you have to work on your novel too, so isn’t it easier for you to focus at home?”

“You’re such a worrywart. I’m not going to write today, I’m just going to rest.”

“Ha Jae-Gun…!”

Would it be better if she told him? If she mentioned it, Ha Jae-Gun might get curious and badger her, asking all about it. While Lee Soo-Hee stomped her feet, unable to decide what to say, Ha Jae-Gun started up his car.

“I’ll see you later. I’ll head to Suwon first, then see you at home.”

“A-alright. Drive safely, Ha Jae-Gun.”

Just as he drove out onto the main road, Ha Jae-Gun’s phone rang. It was a call from his sister, Ha Jae-In. Ha Jae-Gun connected his Bluetooth and answered the phone with a wide smile.

***

“Yeah, Ha Jae-Gun. Director Nam seemed to be quite strong-willed. He said he would definitely turn The Breath into a success. Congratulations. Mm, yeah. It’s not good to stay on the phone for long when you’re driving. Drive safely, I’ll call you again.”

Ha Jae-In hung up and looked at the scenery before her. She was at the construction site of their newly moved house. It was currently a half-finished outline of the grand detached house surrounding a spacious front yard.

Have I ever dreamt of living in a house like this?

It would soon be the third year since Ha Jae-Gun’s career began to take off, and despite that, Ha Jae-In was still surprised by the changing circumstances from time to time. It felt like it was only yesterday when she kept hoping her own younger brother would grow to become more financially stable.

Bzzt!

Ha Jae-In pulled out her phone again, which she had just placed in her pocket, to see the name Ji-Sun, one of her friends who had attended the alumni gathering a few days back.

“Yeah, Ji-Sun.”

— Did you return home safely that day? I didn’t even get to talk to you properly because it was so chaotic that day.

“Yes, I did. That last round was too much, I was slightly drunk.”

— Of course. Your amazing boyfriend came to pick you up, so what’s there for you to worry about for the rest of the night? I almost fainted at the sight of your boyfriend that night. Oh my gosh, he even has a chauffeur. But Ji-Sun, have you seen Sook-Hee’s Kokoa Story?

“No, I haven’t used it for a while. Why?”

— Sook-Hee went off early, saying that she had something urgent to do at home. I went on Kokoa Story the next day, and I found that all the posts she had uploaded had been turned private. All her bragging posts had disappeared.

“Why did she do that all of a sudden? Did something happen?”

— Are you really asking because you don’t know? On the night of our alumni gathering, she didn’t leave early because of something urgent at home but because she was jealous of you and your boyfriend. Anyway, I feel so refreshed; the others are laughing so hard in the group chat.

“Don’t do that. You guys are being silly.”

— I can guarantee you that Sook-Hee will lay low forever. I’ll change my surname if she appears at the next gathering.

Ha Jae-In only smiled wryly without a word. Just then, her phone rang again, it was a call from Nam Gyu-Ho.

“Ji-Sun, I’m sorry, but I’ve another call coming in. I’ll call you again.”

— Alright, call me back when you’re free.

Ha Jae-In pulled the end call button and switched to the call with Nam Gyu-Ho. “Hello, Director Nam.”

—- Have you had lunch?

“Yes, I did. You had lunch, too, right?”

— I had lunch with Writer Ha and the team; we even signed the contract for The Breath as well.

“I know, I just talked to Jae-Gun on the phone as well. Thank you for taking such good care of my brother.”

— I won’t take too long.

Nam Gyu-Ho’s determined voice made her chuckle silently. “What do you mean? It’s fine, even if it takes a while. You’re an outstandingly talented person, so don’t say that…”

— I’m not talking about the game.

“…Pardon?” Ha Jae-In’s smiling face froze, turning perplexed. Unlike his usual self, Nam Gyu-Ho remained silent on the line.

“Then what do you mean…?”

— I was talking about you, Ms. Jae-In.

“Me?”

— I will get the approval before the press conference for The Breath. I don’t wish to make you wait for too long.

Ha Jae-In bit her lips and looked down. It was something she had been feeling anxious about. They hadn’t had the chance to talk about their future, which was currently filled with uncertainty. In fact, this was the first time Nam Gyu-Ho had even brought it up.

— I will definitely get his approval. I’m afraid of losing you, and I would like to call Writer Ha my brother-in-law.

“Director Nam….”

— Will Writer Ha get angry if I call him that?

“N-no….” Ha Jae-In scrunched her tingly nose slightly with a smile. “There’s no reason for him to be angry, no way….”

The sun that had been blocked by the overcast sky finally showed itself. Ha Jae-In raised her hands over her head, the sun warming her freezing hands. She suddenly hoped for spring to come earlier.

***

It would soon be the end of the year.

As usual, Ha Jae-Gun was busy. He was working on both the export copy of the manuscript for The Breath, as well as a new short story for Market Place. He had received assistance from Lee Soo-Hee’s father, Lee Kyung-Wook, as a pawnshop owner and got to add the story to the collection before the year officially ended.

“Thank you for acceding to my interview, Father.”

“Are we all done now? Then set up the chess board.”

“No, sir. I’m sorry, we already played ten games yesterday; please let me off. I’m still feeling exhausted.”

“Stop whining and set it up.”

The consequence of interviewing Lee Kyung-Wook was always chess. After playing countless rounds with him, Ha Jae-Gun unexpectedly gained a lot from the games. In addition to completing his latest short story, he also managed to get closer to Lee Kyung-Wook. New n𝙤vel chapters are published on

“Does your father not play chess?”

“Of course, my father plays. He taught me chess, after all.”

Last week, both Ha Jae-Gun and Lee Soo-Hee’s families had met officially. As both men possessed blunt characteristics, they couldn’t share much information about each other over conversations.

“And compared to you, how is your father’s skill?”

“I think I’m slightly inferior.”

Lee Kyung-Wook’s forehead seemed to shine with the words is that so?

Ha Jae-Gun cheered silently inside, thinking that he had to bring both fathers together for a game of chess in order to escape from this hell hole himself.

“I’d like to see him more often. I hate to be estranged from him after that one meeting last week.”

“He likes hiking, too. I will bring it up to him soon.”

Bzzt!

“Sir, please excuse me while I take this call.”

“Come back soon, I’ll set up the board first.”

Ha Jae-Gun then stepped out into the front yard to answer the incoming call. “Yes, Chae-Rin?”

— You’re doing well, right? Are you busy with wedding preparations?

“It’s still a long time until the wedding. Probably sometime in the summer of next year. Why did you call out of the blue? What about Do-Joon?”

— Tsk, is Do-Joon oppa the only person? I’m disappointed. Anyway, are you available this evening? Do-Joon oppa suggests having dinner together if you’re available.

“Really? Of course, I am. Where shall we meet?”

— I’d like to go to your place if that’s fine with you. I love your basement a lot.

“Okay, tell Do-Joon and come over to my place later.”

— Oh, can I also bring one more person along? They might be appearing on I Live Alone with me, and I hope that you could help me take a look.

“Oh? Who is it?”

Park Do-Joon and Lee Chae-Rin were both confirmed to appear in Ha Jae-Gun’s episode of I Live Alone, but as he didn’t know of any other celebrities aside from them, he hadn’t thought much further on it.

Lee Chae-Rin then said.

— You probably won’t know them. She’s called Yu-Na, and she’s waiting for her debut with a girl group right now.

“Yu-Na?”

— I knew her from way back during my trainee days, but I’m not exactly close to her since we’re in different groups and are busy with our own schedules. We only met recently while filming for Real Theater; I think you’ll like her as well when you guys meet. I’ll tell you more when we meet.

“I’m not sure why you think I’ll like her, but… okay. I’m fine if you bring her over.”

— Thank you, oppa. I’ll call you again later.

“Alright, see you later.” Ha Jae-Gun hung up the call, and then he recalled that Lee Kyung-Wook was waiting for him and hurried back in. However, before Ha Jae-Gun could step into the living room, a text message came in.

– The world today has changed slightly thanks to a certain writer. ^^

Writer Kang? What is this?’ He couldn’t understand what Kang Min-Ho’s message meant. Seeing that the message had a link attached to it, Ha Jae-Gun clicked on it, and the screen showed the website of a free posting board from a novel-related community.

[I received my overdue royalties from Haetae Media today. They had been quiet about it for two whole years and suddenly transferred the amount today;;;; Although the amount was less than 400,000 won, I was still surprised that they had made the settlement. This is why I’m sharing this news.]

Hmm…?’ An anonymous writer had uploaded the post. Ha Jae-Gun tilted his head from side to side, both surprised and curious. Did Haetae Media really feel threatened by his words that day?

“Mr. Writer! Are we going to play chess tomorrow!” Lee Kyung-Wook yelled after waiting for quite some time. Ha Jae-Gun kept his phone in a hurry. He might be curious about the issue with Haetae Media, but the most important thing right now was a game of chess with Lee Kyung-Wook.

***

While Ha Jae-Gun and Lee Kyung-Wook were playing chess, posts by writers who had signed with Haetae Media were continuously uploaded to various novel-related websites.

[I haven’t said a word until now, but I have also just received the bank transfer three days back.]

[I was speechless when I received the money, so I called them to check, but their answer was ridiculous. They said something like their settlement system had been wonky, and that was why the transfer was delayed;;;;]

[I received slightly over 700,000 won today as well. But that was over the course of three years of sales. How ridiculous;;; (blegh)]

[I had called them to process the settlement for my royalties over ten times and had already given up, but I received mine yesterday as well. I haven’t looked in Haetae Media’s way for so long; what happened to them all of a sudden?]

[Woah, is this for real? I made my debut with Haetae Media, but was ruined, so I’m currently working at a company… But I haven’t received my settlement;;;]

The new employee, Dae-Woo, was reading all the posts during his break in the office at Haetae Media. He knew that the reason behind the mass settlement for the writers was the conversation between the pot-bellied president and Department Head Ma Jong-Goo. Their conversation still echoed in his ears.

“Ugh… Just transfer the money to everyone. It’ll be much more of a problem if Ha Jae-Gun decides to turn this into a huge issue.”

“All of them.? What about those who stopped after releasing their debut novel?”

“Why do you keep asking unrelated questions?! Just feign ignorance! If we were to include those writers, then how could the company earn money?! Ignore those writers for the time being.”

“I-I understand, sir.”

The conversation cracked Dae-Woo up. Thankfully, he was all alone in the office since he was the only one working overtime in the office.

“It’s only a matter of time before I start seeing rumors about Ha Jae-Gun’s involvement in all this.” Dae-Woo grabbed his wallet and headed for the door. His assumption was correct, as the newest post uploaded on a certain anonymous website had mentioned Writer Poongchun-Yoo in it.

Chapter 213. Laugh, Why Don’t You (1)

“Chae-Rin unni, I’m not sure if I’m really allowed to appear there.” Han Yu-Na hesitated outside the vehicle.

Lee Chae-Rin’s manager in the driver’s seat turned around to ask Lee Chae-Rin, “You guys are heading straight to Mr. Ha’s place, right?”

“Yeah, Oppa. Yu-Na, hurry up.” Lee Chae-Rin grabbed her by the arm and pulled her into the vehicle by force. As soon as the door closed, her manager stepped on the accelerator, and they drove off.

“There’s no need to be so awkward about this. We’re just having dinner together.”

“But mixing around with a nobody like me is…”

“And you were singing about wanting to see him earlier.”

“But, but, I’m still a nobody… I’ve yet to make my debut… Won’t he think that I’m being impudent?”

Lee Chae-Rin turned to face Han Yu-Na, and then she gripped her hands strongly. “Jae-Gun oppa isn’t that kind of person. You’ll learn later when you meet him, but he makes people feel really comfortable around him. He’s really considerate.”

“…”

“Now stop worrying. Just talk to him, and once that’s done, remember to treat me to a good one.”

“Of course, unni… I will never forget your help today.”

Their car left Ilsan and had just barely made it through the heavy traffic thanks to the off-work peak timing and entered the Guro neighborhood. Soon, they could finally see Ha Jae-Gun’s place at the end of the street.

“That’s his place.”

“Wow, it looks really great.”

“The interior is so much better than the exterior. You’re going to be shocked later.”

Her manager drove into the garage as usual. Moments after he parked the car, the main door opened, and Lee Soo-Hee appeared at the door to welcome them.

“Hello, Team Leader Lee!”

“Why are you still calling me that when we’ve already met a few times? Just use unni with me.” Lee Soo-Hee wiped her wet hands on the apron around her waist.

Lee Chae-Rin grabbed Lee Soo-Hee’s hands and grinned like a young girl. “I’m sorry, unni. Ah, I always find that your skin is so good. You don’t have makeup on today as well, right?”

“How could I when there are guests over? Is there even makeup that’ll make me look like I don’t have any makeup on?” Lee Soo-Hee and Lee Chae-Rin giggled excitedly as they shook their hands like little girls.

Thanks to Ha Jae-Gun and Park Do-Joon, the two ladies managed to meet a few times before; they eventually grew close enough to share shopping or cooking information with each other. In fact, they’d even call each other occasionally.

“Hello, Team Leader Lee.” This chapter is updat𝓮d by nov(e)(l)biin.com

“Hello, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Han Yu-Na.”

Both Lee Chae-Rin’s manager and Han Yu-Na bowed to greet Lee Soo-Hee. Lee Soo-Hee let go of Lee Chae-Rin’s hand and returned with a greeting, “Welcome. Ms. Han Yu-Na, right? I’m Lee Soo-Hee.”

Han Yu-Na was slightly out of her mind. She had seen Ha Jae-Gun’s girlfriend, Lee Soo-Hee’s face on the internet quite a number of times when she was still famous for being the one-piece girl.

Han Yu-Na thought that Lee Soo-Hee was extremely beautiful. Her mind was then filled with questions such as why someone like her didn’t become a celebrity, had her family opposed the idea…

She even wondered if it was because she was quite shy when around others.

The photos did not do her justice…!’ Han Yu-Na came to a realization at the moment she met Lee Soo-Hee in the flesh. The beauty in those photos was nothing compared to what she was seeing right now. The Lee Soo-Hee in front of her was so breathtakingly beautiful to her, even as someone of the same gender, making Han Yu-Na’s heart skip a beat.

“Where is Jae-Gun oppa? Is he in?”

“He’s been held back by my father back at my parents and just began to drive back. He was at Yeonhui-dong, so it shouldn’t take him too long to come back. Come in first.” Lee Soo-Hee walked a few steps ahead, but her eyelid suddenly began twitching. A strange feeling overcame her. Wasn’t Park Do-Joon supposed to join them tonight as well?

Um, Ms. Lee Chae-Rin.” Lee Soo-Hee grabbed Lee Chae-Rin aside and whispered in her ear. “What’s happening?”

“Pardon? What about?”

“I’m talking about Ms. Han Yu-Na. Is the relationship between you and Mr. Park Do-Joon…”

Ah, you’re referring to that.” Lee Chae-Rin finally understood what Lee Soo-Hee was saying and smiled bitterly. “We’re thinking of announcing our relationship.”

“You’re announcing it? Why?”

“Take a look at this first, unni.” Lee Chae-Rin took out her phone and showed a website to Lee Soo-Hee. It showed rumors and various anonymous sources of Park Do-Joon and Lee Chae-Rin dating each other.

“It’s been quiet for a while, but it’s been getting worse lately. The reporters are also gathering in groups.”

“I see… Where did it start from, I wonder?”

“Their intention wouldn’t be good. Well, it’s fine. We didn’t think that we’d be able to keep our relationship under wraps forever.”

“What did your agency’s CEO say about this?”

“He suggested that we accept things as they come. I thought he would reprimand me quite heavily, but he’s quite a cool person.”

Lee Soo-Hee only nodded, not asking further. She knew that announcing their relationship would not hurt Park Do-Joon in any way. However, what would happen to Lee Chae-Rin, who was an idol star and also the leader of the girl group AppleT?

“You’re not worrying about me, right?” Lee Chae-Rin asked with a smile as if she had read Lee Soo-Hee’s thoughts. “Look at my age; how long can I live as the leader of a girl group? I’m looking to seriously forge my image as a singer, I really want to get recognized as a proper singer.”

“You are really good at singing; look at the OST you sang for Gyeoja Bathhouse. It’s still on the charts. It’s because you’re a member of a girl group that your skills aren’t recognized. I believe that you’ll do even better.”

While the two ladies were talking, Han Yu-Na was busy admiring the interior of Ha Jae-Gun’s house. Beyond the spacious and luxurious living room was a room with its door slightly ajar. The size of the room, which could be seen at a glance, was about the size of the four-pax dormitory that Han Yu-Na was living in right now.

I must succeed as well…’ Han Yu-Na thought as she looked from afar. She suddenly noticed something moving from the corner of her eyes and finally identified a white cat crawling out from under the blanket.

“How cute…!” Han Yu-Na exclaimed subconsciously. She was extremely fond of pets. The white cat jumped down from the bed and looked at Han Yu-Na for a while before letting out a yawn.

Ah, looks like Nun-Sol just woke up. He’s a sleepyhead.”

“His name’s Nun-Sol? That’s a cute name.” Lee Chae-Rin added as she stood up from the sofa and approached him.

“His name was originally Chul-Soo, Ha Jae-Gun oppa’s naming sense is atrocious. Nun-Sol, noona is here. Come over.”

Ah, so they’re siblings. Nun-Sol, why don’t you come to me?”

Nun-Sol rolled up his tail and then walked to both Lee Chae-Rin and Han Yu-Na. The girls patted him gently, and he laid down beside them with the most relaxed expression on his face.

Vroom!

“Ah, Jae-Gun must be back.” Lee Soo-Hee headed to the foyer when she heard the sound of a car engine rolling in. Two vehicles drove in one after the other. Ha Jae-Gun alighted from the car that stopped first with Rika in his arms, while Park Do-Joon and Woo Tae-Bong alighted from the car behind.

“Welcome. How did you guys drive in together?”

“We were surprised as well, Ms. Soo-Hee. The car in front as we drove in looked familiar, and we just realized that it belonged to Jae-Gun.”

“It’s great that you’re just fascinated. I was shocked when I looked at the rearview mirror.”

Han Yu-Na stood straight by the door with her hands gathered in front of her, looking all nervous. As Ha Jae-Gun approached, she bowed politely first and introduced herself, “Hello, Mr. Ha Jae-Gun. I’m Han Yu-Na, and I’m twenty-two years old. I’m preparing for my debut with a girl group called HyperSoda. It’s my honor to meet you, and thanks for inviting me over.”

Han Yu-Na finished her greeting as if they were lines prepared in advance. It was safe to say that it was a self-introduction used commonly at auditions. Han Yu-Na was bound to be nervous and act awkwardly as she hadn’t made her debut.

Meanwhile, Ha Jae-Gun had risen to an unrivaled status after sweeping the novel industry in both the domestic and international markets, along with movies and games. She also realized the impact he had on the broadcasting stations, thanks to Bo-Ra. She was both in awe and fearful of him.

“Hello, I’m Ha Jae-Gun.” Ha Jae-Gun gave a slightly embarrassed smile. He reached his hand out for a handshake and continued. “I enjoyed watching the episode of Real Theater in which you appeared with Lee Chae-Rin. You’re really great at dancing; it makes me envious because I’m not really that good at dancing.”

“Ah, thank you… Mr. Ha. I’m not that good of a dancer…”

“Please don’t call me Mr. Ha. And my arm is hurting. Should I keep holding my arm out?”

Ah, I’m sorry…! I’m really sorry.” Han Yu-Na apologized profusely and shook Ha Jae-Gun’s hand. Warmth spread through his hand, realizing that he was indeed a warm-hearted person like what Lee Chae-Rin had described.

“Rika, it’s your first time seeing Han Yu-Na unni, so why don’t you say hi, too?” Ha Jae-Gun put Rika down on the floor and continued jokingly. “Rika is good at reading people. She would go to the nice people first and act cute with them.”

Han Yu-Na squatted as she listened to Ha Jae-Gun. Her body shuddered lightly as she met eyes with Rika. However, Rika didn’t seem that happy; her deep blue fur also seemed to be standing on its ends.

“Hello… Rika?” Han Yu-Na carefully extended her hand, but before her fingertips could touch Rika, Rika walked away. The cat walked elegantly arrogantly past Han Yu-Na and headed into the house.

Ah… It seems like she isn’t in the mood today.” Ha Jae-Gun scratched the back of his head awkwardly, regretting that he shouldn’t have made that joke earlier.

Han Yu-Na turned around and stood up with an embarrassed smile. Meanwhile, Rika had already left her sight.

“I think I finally understand why she wanted to introduce Han Yu-Na to me. She’s almost on par with Lee Chae-Rin as a literary girl. She’s good with words, too.”

Ha Jae-Gun and Park Do-Joon sat by the terrace, as they enjoyed the cold wind. The group was currently going for round two with drinks at the basement lounge after their dinner earlier.

“I couldn’t stop being impressed by how she used dance to express her feelings after reading my novels. She really read a lot of them, and the purchase dates she showed me through her phone earlier were all from last year.”

“You even looked at her purchase dates during that short period of time? Wow, you’re indeed Ha Jae-Gun. Anyway, she has quite the character. I’ve met her a few times because of Chae-Rin; she’s a nice person.”

Park Do-Joon patted Ha Jae-Gun on his shoulder and said, “Sorry for asking you to do this.”

“Nah, you helped me add more guests to the show that could have turned out to be boring. I should be thankful to you instead.”

“I just thought that it would be better to postpone announcing our relationship as much as possible. I’m appearing on the show, and it’ll be weird to have Lee Chae-Rin appear again later alone.”

“Yeah, it’s best to plan this more naturally. It’s better since Lee Chae-Rin and Ms. Han Yu-Na have known each other since their trainee days; plus, they have the same hobby as well.”

Ha Jae-Gun looked up at the night sky, which was littered with stars. After a moment of silence, Ha Jae-Gun mumbled, “Seems like you’ll have enemies because of me…”

“What? Ah, are you talking about the people who had spread rumors of me and Lee Chae-Rin’s relationship?”

Ha Jae-Gun chuckled with affirmation, making Park Do-Joon burst into laughter. “While I turned a fox into my enemy, I made a lion as a friend. What’s there to worry about?”

“I like being a tiger more than a lion.”

“Aren’t lions stronger? They always say that the lions win when both of them fight.”

“There’s no way they’ll meet since their habitats are different. Anyway, let’s head back. You still have to film Storm and Gale, so you can’t afford to catch a cold.”

“Look at you, worried about your friend’s health just because of your own reputation.” Park Do-Joon chuckled mischievously and jumped onto Ha Jae-Gun’s back. Ha Jae-Gun found his balance and went down the stairs with Park Do-Joon on his back.

***

[The first episode of the drama, Summer in My 20s, hits 17.8%. Moreover, both dramas airing at the same time are doing quite well. This is definitely a great feat. What do you think, Reporter Choi?]

[The original novel written by Writer Ha Jae-Gun is a bestseller. Isn’t it still selling like hotcakes? The movie starring Actor Park Do-Joon was also released early.]

[Yes, I have read the book and watched the movie as well.]

[The movie didn’t receive good reviews, but it was still a success. Well, in conclusion, I think there were a lot of aspects of the drama that had attracted the viewers’ attention.]

A discussion was ongoing on the live broadcast from a cable channel. Chae Bo-Ra watched the screen with hollow eyes while biting her nails nervously. The apartment she was living in was desolate; empty beer cans and trash were strewn across the floor.

[There were a lot of talks about Director Lee Eun-Ha as well. She had mentioned that she was about to quit and head back to her hometown but was revived from the depths thanks to Writer Ha Jae-Gun’s introduction.]

[Yes, I have also met her a few times personally for interviews. As she had said so herself, she had suffered a lot in the past years. It was Writer Ha Jae-Gun who had coincidentally discovered Director Lee who was quite the talent with regards to directing and writing scenarios.]

Bo-Ra reached out for a can of beer. The can became empty before she realized it.

She crushed it with all her might and tossed it away.

Bzzt!

It was a call from her manager—a call she had been waiting for. Chae Bo-Ra answered it in a heartbeat.

“How did it go?!” Chae Bo-Ra yelled into the receiver.

An audible, heavy sigh could be heard from the other side of the line.

— The Healthy White Paper panel retracted your appearance as well.

“What do you mean?”

— They say you don’t match their program concept.

“Again?! Why are all their rejection reasons the same?!”

— My ears are going to burst, Bo-Ra. Lower your voice.

“What about the advertisements? Is Dong-Ah Osaka renewing the contract?”

— We’re still discussing it…

“What’s wrong? Just tell me already! I’m about to lose my mind here!” Bo-Ra couldn’t hold herself back. It had been days since she felt like she was constantly strangled by a pair of invisible hands. Following Five WheelsHealthy White Paper was the second program that had rejected her. Although she had long asked Director Cho Cheol-Won from See&Good to pull some strings, it didn’t seem to be effective.

“Ah, whatever! I’m hanging up! Don’t call me unless there’s a proper casting call!”

Chae Bo-Ra clenched her teeth and threw her phone aside. The program continued broadcasting as she ruffled her hair in frustration.

[…And something else that we can’t help but bring up is Ms. Shim Yeon-Gyeong, who plays the role of Lee Ye-Ji. She has been getting a lot of attention for her outstanding acting skills lately.]

…?!’ Chae Bo-Ra looked up in astonishment. The name Lee Ye-Ji was a nightmare to her. It was the name of the character Chae Bo-Ra had played in the movie adaptation of Summer in My 20s. Afraid of what the host might say afterward, Chae Bo-Ra frantically searched for the remote control.

[Compliments from viewers are pouring in on how immersed they were in her creepy acting skills. Ms. Shim Yeon-Gyeong is currently still a rookie, yet she did a great job taking on the role of such a bright and positive character.]

[That’s right. Ah, Reporter Choi, I saw a lot of posts comparing Chae Bo-Ra and Shim Yeon-Gyeong’s versions of the same character. What do you think about it?]

[That is bound to happen. Chae Bo-Ra was being called out for her bad acting skills back then, and now the two actors are receiving opposite reviews from viewers, so obviously from the viewers’ point of view—]

Pzzt!

Chae Bo-Ra finally found the remote control and turned off the TV. Chae Bo-Ra put on her cardigan and picked up her wallet, leaving the house. She had to grab a few bottles of alcohol, or she wouldn’t be able to survive the long and lonely night.

“Oh? It’s Bo-Ra unni!”

Two customers seemingly university students recognized Chae Bo-Ra in the convenience store located within the residential building. The girls didn’t know what else to do, but they approached her quickly and tried talking to her.

“Bo-Ra unni, I’m a fan of yours.”

“Do you live here? It must be hard on you recently, right?” Chae Bo-Ra only kept her head down and finished paying for her purchases quietly. The two students froze as they saw Chae Bo-Ra turn around with an icy stare.

“…What? She looks totally different from on TV.”

“She looks kinda tired. Doesn’t she reek of alcohol?”

“Yeah… there’s a huge difference from when she was crying while helping the disadvantaged?”

Chae Bo-Ra crossed the corridor single-mindedly, not knowing that the girls were discussing herself. She was on the phone, busy looking for Han Yu-Na’s contact number. The call rang for a while; it was only when the elevator arrived that it was connected to the voicemail.

She finally realized that Han Yu-Na hadn’t answered her call.

Chapter 214. Laugh, Why Don’t You (2)

“Seriously, Director Lee. You’re earning much more now, but aren’t you too stingy just ordering sweet and sour pork and black bean noodles?”

“What kind of luxurious food are you asking for then? Should I call a restaurant and ask for a steak to be delivered over?” Lee Eun-Ha asked as she tore off the cling wrap off the bowl of black bean noodles that had just been delivered.

Lee Eun-Ha had taken some time off after a long period of drama filming and had just returned to the Bucheon office. Amongst the writers who gathered around the dinner table with her was Ha Jae-Gun.

“Congratulations, Director Lee,” Ha Jae-Gun said as he mixed his bowl of noodles.

Lee Eun-Ha grinned as she shook her head. “It’s nothing worth congratulating. It’s all because of your original novel.”

“No way. It’s definitely because of your outstanding directing.”

“Well, it’s still something worth complimenting you for. At least you’re not ruining the great original novel like a certain director.” Yang Hyun-Kyung added while chewing on his noodles.

“How much higher will the ratings go? The ratings for the first episode are already off the charts.”

Beside Yang Hyun-Kyung, Kang Min-Ho nodded in agreement and added, “I think the ratings might go over thirty percent. Although I feel slightly apologetic toward both Director Lee and Writer Ha, I never expected that the response would be this great. There’s another popular drama on the same time slot, and people don’t just watch programs on public channels nowadays, too.”

Even Jang Eun-Young, who had been focusing on her meal, added, “I don’t think it’ll be difficult to hit thirty percent in ratings. I think it’s showing signs of a huge hit.”

Ha Jae-Gun smiled as he inhaled a huge mouthful of noodles. In fact, the results of the drama’s success were already showing. The earliest sign was that the sales of his novel were increasing once more. The viewers of the drama naturally gained interest in the novel and sought to purchase it, turning them into his readers.

“Is everything fine with Director Yoon Tae-Sung?” Ha Jae-Gun changed the topic of the conversation and asked about Yoon Tae-Sung.

Lee Eun-Ha immediately turned pouty as she slurped on her noodles. “You know what he’s like when he’s working. He would only be focused on work and work alone. I went to see him at the filming site for Storm and Gale once, and he even ignored me. He looked like he was half out of his mind.”

“Director Yoon can be quite hyperfocused. I was also surprised when I went to find him at the filming site for There Was A Sea.”

“Well, I doubt you should be all that surprised when you’re the scarier one who must finish writing once you’ve started. While we’re on the topic, you should also take care of your own health, Writer Ha. Thankfully, you’ve got a partner who can always take care of you now.”

Their meal ended on a good note. Ha Jae-Gun was enjoying his coffee as he stood on the terrace when he suddenly felt the atmosphere in the office turn bleak. He looked around instinctively and realized what the reason was.

It’d be noisy if Yeon-Woo was around.’ It looked like the office was bustling with the four new writers around, but all of them added together lacked vitality compared to one single person.

The frequency of Ha Jae-Gun seeing Lee Yeon-Woo around in the office had been decreasing over time as the latter had been spending more time at his parent’s place in Suwon. Lee Yeon-Woo would only come to the office three days a week.

Is he really fine?’ However, there was no issue in particular that Ha Jae-Gun could point out. Even when he asked Lee Yeon-Woo personally, Lee Yeon-Woo would only reply that everything was fine. In fact, he was doing great.

He was even working on his novel diligently, submitting chapters on time. What bothered Ha Jae-Gun was actually Lee Yeon-Woo’s smile. His smiles looked somewhat awkward and contrived, as if he was trying to hide an unspeakable pain.

“Ms. So-Mi seems to be quite busy these days as well. I miss seeing her cute face around.” Jang Eun-Young mumbled from behind.

Ha Jae-Gun took a sip of his coffee and nodded. Indeed, Lee Yeon-Woo wasn’t the only person to be distancing himself from this office.

Bzzt!

Ha Jae-Gun’s phone rang in his pocket. He stopped thinking about both Lee Yeon-Woo and Jung So-Mi as he answered the call.

“Yes, Director.”

— Hello, Mr. Ha. Have you had lunch?

“Yes, I did. I was about to head over to the library.” Ha Jae-Gun hung up the call shortly after and headed to the washroom to brush his teeth. He was scheduled to hold a lecture today at the library. Instead of wearing his usual casual outfit, he was donning a suit today just for the lecture.

“Jae-Gun hyung, you’ve got toothpaste here.”

Ah, it must have splattered. Thank you.” Ha Jae-Gun took the tissue that Yang Hyun-Kyung had offered and wiped a spot on his shoulder. As he checked himself out for one last time in the mirror, Yang Hyun-Kyung said, “I think you look great every time I see you.”

“What are you going to say now?”

“With the success of your dramas, commercial deals come rushing in like floods, but you just rejected them all. And seeing how you still hold such lectures that do not give you any monetary benefits is just, I’m not sure what to say exactly….”

“If you don’t know, then you don’t have to say anything.”

“Anyway, I always learn something from you—money isn’t everything for example.”

“Isn’t that line something that doesn’t fit your character as a former self-made investor?”

Ah,

hyung. Please stop mentioning the stock…”

A while later, Ha Jae-Gun left the office happily as the writers sent him off. Ha Jae-Gun kept whistling a tune as he drove toward the library, feeling happy and excited at the thought of meeting his beloved readers. He even wondered if the readers who attended his previous lecture would appear today as well.

Ha Jae-Gun arrived at the library thirty minutes earlier than scheduled. Readers camping from the library’s entrance to the parking lot threw their attention toward him. There was still quite some time until the lecture started, but there were already dozens of people outside the library.

“Ah, Writer Ha Jae-Gun is here! Hello!”

“Mr. Ha, I’m really glad to see that you’re here holding another lecture. I attended the previous lecture, too. Do you still remember me?”

“What about me? I asked you to give my child some tips about writing a thesis. Hohoho, I heard you’re getting married too. Your partner looks beautiful.”

“I’m enjoying Summer in My 20s a lot. Do you watch it too? What does it feel like watching the product of your own work?”

It was impossible for him to answer each and every question. Ha Jae-Gun excused himself from the crowd with an apologetic smile and pushed through the crowd and made his way through the library’s entrance, meeting Director Bae in the hall.

Aigoo, welcome. Thank you for coming over.”

“Hello, Director.”

“It’s crowded here, so why don’t we head somewhere else for a cup of coffee or tea?” Director Bae led Ha Jae-Gun to his office.

As they had a cup of coffee, Director Bae said, “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for taking the time to do this. And as I’ve mentioned before, the Head of the District Office is attending the lecture today as well.”

“Yes, I remember,” Ha Jae-Gun answered briefly, and then he took a sip of his coffee. There was nothing else for him to say since he had never met the head of the district office before.

Director Bae continued, “So… The head of the district office would like to make a speech before your lecture starts….”

“…?” The look in Ha Jae-Gun’s eyes changed instantly. What would the head of the district office like to address when it was a lecture meant for his readers?

As if reading his mind, Director Bae waved his hand in a hurry and added, “It’s something like a welcome speech. To thank you for coming down to hold the lecture for the betterment of the local culture… he’s going up the podium first and—”

“I understand what you’re saying.” Ha Jae-Gun interrupted the director.

The older man’s face turned into a look of trouble, afraid that he might have touched Ha Jae-Gun’s nerves.

“Please go ahead with it,” Ha Jae-Gun said after a moment of thought. Ha Jae-Gun didn’t like the way things were done, but he also pitied the older man who was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Since the head of the district office was already coming, the director would be put in a tight spot if things were to change.

Ten minutes later, there was knocking on the door, and a pair of middle-aged men and a young woman appeared at the door.

Of the two men, one was the head of the district office himself, the other the section chief of the general affairs department, and the lady was the head of the district office’s secretary.

“Hello, Mr. Ha. I am Yang Beom-Shik, Head of the local District Office. I’m happy to meet you here.”

“Hello. My name is Ha Jae-Gun.” As Ha Jae-Gun shook hands with Yang Beom-Shik, he suddenly felt the need to check himself out in a mirror. He wanted to know how the smile on his lips would look in other’s eyes.

The ominous feeling stirring in his head felt like it wouldn’t go away soon.

***

“…Here is my name card. You see my contact number on it, right? If you dial that number, you will be able to reach me directly instead of going through my secretary. A system that goes direct without having to wait. I can say that I, Yang Beom-Shik, is the policy that I am most confident of in this entire district.”

Meanwhile, Ha Jae-Gun’s face looked infinitely stiff as he sat in the seat right in front of the podium. He had expected this to a certain extent but never imagined that the man would be this blatant.

Yang Beom-Shik’s congratulations and literary-related speech ended in a few minutes. Afterward, he started talking about his policies.

Thank goodness I decided to step down from the podium.’

The head of the district office and Director Bae wanted to have Ha Jae-Gun sit on stage beside the podium during the speech. However, Ha Jae-Gun rejected it flatly, as he wouldn’t know what the politically greedy man would say on stage. He also didn’t want his readers to misunderstand that he was supporting the head of the district office if he were to sit on the stage.

“…Let’s begin Mr. Ha Jae-Gun’s lecture. Everyone, please give him a round of applause.” A thunderous applause resounded the hall.

The bitterness in Ha Jae-Gun’s mouth did not leave as he stepped onto the podium; he did not once look in the direction of Yang Beom-Shik, who was all smiles.

“Hello, everyone. I am Ha Jae-Gun. This is my second time holding a lecture in the library of my neighborhood. It’s nice to see all of you here.” Ha Jae-Gun took his lecture materials and began his lecture. Thanks to the experiences he had before, this lecture didn’t pose much of an issue for him. He was able to end the lecture successfully while drawing out laughter and relatability from the audience.

“Thanks for your hard work, Mr. Ha.”

“It’s nothing, director. Thank you for setting this up.”

Ha Jae-Gun turned around after his short conversation with the director when someone blocked his way. He was the section chief of the general affairs department.

“Mr. Ha Jae-Gun, the head of the district office, would like to thank you personally for holding the lecture today. Let’s have dinner together.”

“I’m sorry, but I actually have a prior appointment, so I won’t be able to join.”

“Mr. Yang had made dinner plans for this from his busy schedule, he’ll be disappointed to hear that you’re not joining. There are also a few reporters outside, so why don’t we take a group photo first?”

The section chief did not back down easily. Ha Jae-Gun then realized one thing: the world of this man was solely made up of the head of the district office and did not care about anyone else’s circumstances.

“Things might have been different if you had informed me in advance, but I really can’t make it today.” Ha Jae-Gun was about to repeat his circumstance and decline once more when a hand tapped Ha Jae-Gun’s shoulder from behind.

Turning around, Ha Jae-Gun spotted a familiar face, it was the housewife carrying her child in her arms.

“Hello, Mr. Ha. Do you still remember me?”

Ahh, yes, of course I do.” Ha Jae-Gun smiled warmly and looked at the child in her arms.

Back then, Lee Yeon-Woo had consoled the child in Ha Jae-Gun’s stead, as he was feeling under the weather at the time.

“Wow, your child has grown so much already? How lovable. Wow, that finger.”

“Kids grow fast. Your lecture today was amazing, as usual, Mr. Ha. I’m extremely happy since it’s a rest day for my company, too. Thank you so much for the great lecture.”

Ha Jae-Gun grinned at the reader. Even her child giggled happily and was touching Ha Jae-Gun’s cheek with their tiny hands.

The section chief looked uncomfortable as he watched from the sides. His patience had obviously run out as he waved his hand dismissively at the lady, “Ma’am, you can talk to Mr. Ha another time; he’s busy, okay?”

Ha Jae-Gun was astonished, turning pale. The lady was both perplexed and flustered as her face turned red with embarrassment. She retreated and said, “Ah… I’m sorry. I didn’t know—Ah!

She had unknowingly retreated onto the steps behind her and lost her balance.

Ha Jae-Gun caught her before she fell. “T-thank you.”

“Are you available? Do you have to return now?”

“Pardon? N-no…?”

“Let me treat you to a cup of tea here at the lounge, then. Let’s go.” Ha Jae-Gun and the housewife turned around, heading toward the exit.

The section chief was bewildered at the turn of events and stared after them in a daze for a few moments before following behind. “Um, Mr. Ha? As I’ve mentioned earlier, the head of the district office has arranged for a meeting….”

“I’m not going,” Ha Jae-Gun replied with a cold glare. “It’s not that I can’t go, but I won’t go. I’m not here to meet the head of the district office today; I’m here to meet my readers.”

“Mr. Ha… I….”

“The person who should be considerate of my busy schedule shouldn’t be my reader, but you, section chief. Please don’t intervene, do you understand?”

The section chief was speechless and stood there gulping his saliva with fear.

Ha Jae-Gun led the housewife along. As he walked, he recalled the conversation he had with Kwon Tae-Won over the phone about the lecture; Kwon Tae-Won said that there would be more bothersome things coming up in the future.

At least there’s an interesting story to tell.’ Ha Jae-Gun pulled out his notepad and wrote down the new subject, who would become the main character for his new short story in the Market Place.

It wasn’t a fruitless day. Ha Jae-Gun thought that he wouldn’t be meeting the head of the district office again in the future.

Clatter!

The glass cup that was filled with milk hit the wall and shattered into pieces. Chae Bo-Ra was seething in anger, drawing in deep breaths to calm herself down.

Right after Healthy White Paper, another variety program named Come Over To Play also rejected her appearance on the show. It was almost impossible to know how long it had been since she left her house for any broadcast schedules.

How can anyone force someone into their wits’ end…?! Shouldn’t they at least give some breathing space!?

Playing on the TV in the living room was the music video of the new girl group HyperSoda. Chae Bo-Ra then recalled that the group was having their debut showcase today. Their single was released for the first time at noon.

That bitch… how dare she ignore me after gaining some popularity?!’ Chae Bo-Ra glared at the TV, staring intently at one person on the screen. She was staring only at Han Yu-Na.

Han Yu-Na had been gaining a lot of attention since she appeared on I Live Alone with Ha Jae-Gun as a guest. Viewers loved how she expressed her appreciation through dance, and thanks to that, she earned herself more screen time. She even gained the nickname—second literary girl—second only to Lee Chae-Rin.

However, Han Yu-Na was revolting in Chae Bo-Ra’s eyes. She had never imagined that Han Yu-Na would gain so much attention from others. Even their agency’s CEO was seeing Han Yu-Na in a different light; he had high expectations for the group, saying that they would soon be the face of the agency.

So that’s how things are going, huh…? You’re extremely suspicious, you wicked witch.’ Bo-Ra bit her lips, and then she went to change her clothes.

It would take her thirty minutes to reach the showcase venue by taxi. If she left now, she could make it before the showcase ended.

Chapter 215. Laugh, Why Don’t You (3)

The media showcase for HyperSoda was located at Hyeum Art Hall, which was located in the basement of a building in central Gangnam. Countless reporters and fans filled the hall as the screen played the girl group’s newly released music video after the media press conference.

“The music video is done really well,” the department head mumbled as they stood at the back of the hallway. Beside them was the girl group’s manager, who nodded in response with a smile.

Soon, it would be three in the afternoon, and the girls would perform their new song live for the first time, after which would mark the end of the showcase’s part 1.

“Isn’t today a great day to hold a showcase?”

“Yeah, it doesn’t overlap with the other groups as well.” The showcase was an extremely important event as it marked the first release of the album and the new song of a group. And HyperSoda had also been putting tremendous effort into preparing for today. If other high-profile groups had held their media showcase on the same day, HyperSoda’s debut would naturally be buried. It would be worse if their showcase timings clashed, as they would be pushed out of the competition by the reporters from the pop culture department and entertainment department.

“I’m feeling relieved now.”

“No, not yet. Don’t feel relieved until the entire showcase is over.”

As the music video finished playing, the first performance began. All five members of the group, including Han Yu-Na, stood on stage. The strong dance beats playing from the speakers was their debut track.

“Han Yu-Na is a great dancer.”

“I think so too. All five of them dance the same moves, but only Han Yu-Na stands out. She’s a natural.”

“Thankfully, the response from I Live Alone was good. It’s also the top contributor to HyperSoda’s recognition. We should thank Writer Ha Jae-Gun sometime, hmm?

“Yes, I was planning to give him a call later after the showcase ends. We’re truly indebted to him.”

Just as the department head and manager were enjoying their conversation, Chae Bo-Ra entered the hall by cutting through the security guards at the entrance. Her light makeup and straight hair emphasized her innocent look.

“Hello, department head.”

“…Why are you here?” The department head frowned lightly and looked around their surroundings.

Chae Bo-Ra did not give a hoot about their reaction and giggled, then said, “I’m close with Han Yu-Na unni, so of course I’m here to give her support. We’re from the same agency, after all.”

“I’m not asking about that. Didn’t the CEO say that you’re grounded aside from work calls?”

“Grounded? Am I supposed to stay home around the clock? I need to get cast somehow.”

“Forget it.” The department head clicked their tongue and left Chae Bo-Ra.

Chae Bo-Ra took over the now-empty spot and looked toward the stage. She turned to the manager beside her and asked, “There’s nothing lined up after the showcase ends, right?”

Ah, um… yes. At least there’s nothing until tomorrow morning…” The manager trailed off, scratching the back of his head. Chae Bo-Ra was the last person anyone wanted to deal with in the agency. He was well aware of her true character, which was unlike her angelic persona seen on TV.

“But… Why do you ask?” the manager asked, afraid and curious at the same time.

Smirk.

Chae Bo-Ra turned to save him with a smirk and replied, “I want to treat Han Yu-Na unni to a meal. I’ll be at the lounge for a while and will come back later.”

The manager gritted his teeth as he watched Chae Bo-Ra walk away, as he had recently guessed that Chae Bo-Ra had been bullying Han Yu-Na. Whenever Han Yu-Na was called out by Chae Bo-Ra, she would always return looking downcast. There was once when she returned and locked herself in the bathroom of their dormitory, sobbing for an entire hour.

The manager was worried sick for her; anyone could see that she was the kindest and sincerest person in the group. He had asked her for the reason on several counts, but he could not get an answer from her. He figured that she might be fearful of Chae Bo-Ra’s retaliation, as Chae Bo-Ra was similar to a walking time bomb.

It was impossible to know just what kind of scheme she was cooking.

You can stand up confidently now instead of avoiding it, Han Yu-Na,’ the manager thought as he watched Han Yu-Na light up the stage with vibrant dance moves.

Many would remember Han Yu-Na after this showcase; the manager firmly believed in it, and it wasn’t a baseless belief. After all, he had gone through so many tough times with Han Yu-Na.

***

“Chae Bo-Ra…?” Han Yu-Na was about to drink from a bottle of water when her blood drained from her face. She had just ended the second part of the media showcase, including the fan meeting.

Her manager whispered, “She said she’ll be at the lounge, so leave through the car park. You don’t want to see her now anyway.”

“No, oppa.” Han Yu-Na shook her head, making up her mind. She had made her debut proudly under the group name HyperSoda. She would also finally be able to return all the money she had borrowed from Chae Bo-Ra by next week.

“Since she’s come all the way here, I’ll meet her briefly before leaving.”

“Just what’s going on? Why are you being manipulated by her?”

“There’s nothing before, and there’s definitely nothing in the future,” Han Yu-Na reassured her manager and grabbed both his hands. “Thank you for today, oppa. Please go back to the dorm first with the girls. I won’t stay out late.”

“You’re going to be fine, right?”

“Of course. We’re from the same agency anyway.” After reassuring her manager, Han Yu-Na headed to the lounge. Before she could reach halfway down the hallway, the door to the lounge opened and out came Chae Bo-Ra.

Oh, you’re here early.”

“I came immediately after the showcase.”

Both Chae Bo-Ra and Han Yu-Na stood a meter apart from each other. Unlike Han Yu-Na, who stood stiffly like a statue, Chae Bo-Ra had a nonchalant smile on her face.

“Looks like the showcase ended on a good note. Congratulations, unni.”

“Thank you.”

“You must be very busy recently, hmm?

“Yes, kind of.” Han Yu-Na replied curtly.

Chae Bo-Ra frowned slightly and scoffed. “So busy that you couldn’t even give me a call?”

“Yeah, I was that busy,” Han Yu-Na replied firmly. However, Han Yu-Na had, in fact, broken out into a cold sweat. She might not have shown it on her face, but fear was building up in her once more.

“I can return all the money I borrowed from you next week,” Han Yu-Na gulped and answered.

Chae Bo-Ra’s eyes narrowed, and she glared at Han Yu-Na

Han Yu-Na felt strength draining from one leg, but she remained unfazed her; she couldn’t afford to lose this fight in this stare-down. She no longer wanted to be dominated by Chae Bo-Ra.

“Let’s talk.” Chae Bo-Ra’s icy tone echoed through the hallway. “I’m here to buy you a meal, but I think you might get indigestion instead, so why don’t we go to the cafe next door?”

“Sure.”

***

The two ladies took a corner table in the cozy cafe next door. Chae Bo-Ra bought herself a glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice and took a sip from it, then started without hesitation, “I’ll be straightforward. Please help me, unni.”

“Help you? For what…”

“For what? How could you say that when you know what situation I’ve been in recently? I’m forced to a dead end these days. Content Producer Bae, Producer Oh, Producer Ahn… Everyone who has worked with Ha Jae-Gun or is working with him now has cut all ties with me.”

Chae Bo-Ra looked around briefly, and then she leaned forward to Han Yu-Na. “Please mention me on I Live Alone.”

“…?!”

“We’re from the same agency and are close, right? So just bring me up in passing naturally during the show, say that Chae Bo-Ra is a kind and nice friend and that you’re grateful to her for taking care of you during your trainee days.”

This was the second-best plan Chae Bo-Ra could come up with. She would love to appear on the show herself, even for at least thirty seconds, to pull herself out of this crisis. However, she couldn’t hope for that at all. It wasn’t a matter of conscience but a rational judgment that the ideal situation was impossible to attain.

Even the simple task of cutting a square of tofu would require one to lay down a cutting board and hold a knife in hand. Her first step would be using Han Yu-Na to gain an opening for herself. At least, she would have to create a positive image for herself on I Live Alone, where Ha Jae-Gun was the main guest. This was what Chae Bo-Ra was planning.

Hmm? Unni, you can do that for me, right?”

“The team is going to edit it out even if I do say that.”

“That’s why… I’m asking you to say it in a way that it won’t get edited out.” Chae Bo-Ra reached out to grab Han Yu-Na’s hand.

…!’ At that moment, Han Yu-Na felt shock travel all over her body and flinched.

“Suggest to resolve it if he has any misunderstanding. If you show how much you’re caring for me, he might not reject you. It’s also just a single variety show he’s doing in passing for him as a writer, no?”

Han Yu-Na looked down without a sound. As Chae Bo-Ra let go of her hands a few moments later, Han Yu-Na shook her head, “I’m sorry, I can’t do it.”

“You can’t help me…? Why?”

“You don’t know him well. He won’t agree to this. That’s why I can’t.”

Chae Bo-Ra abandoned her tender attitude and cast a deathly glare at Han Yu-Na.

“You’ve grown a lot in the time I haven’t seen you, huh?” she spat coldly.

“Don’t say that.” Han Yu-Na maintained eye contact with Chae Bo-Ra despite her shaking slightly. “I’m older than you, I’m not in the position to hear that from you. Are you done? Is there anything else you want to say? I’m busy.”

Chae Bo-Ra turned away and scoffed. When did Han Yu-Na grow so much when she used to be a timid girl after getting slapped once? If they weren’t at a cafe, Chae Bo-Ra would have flipped the table on her.

“Well, there’s no helping if that’s what you said.” Chae Bo-Ra mumbled, seemingly accepting the situation.

However, Han Yu-Na wasn’t letting her guard down. There was no way this girl with gleaming eyes and the heart of a snake would let it go so easily.

“Then you shouldn’t appear on the show either.”

“…What?”

“Are you deaf? I said you shouldn’t go on the show. And don’t appear in any programs related to Ha Jae-Gun or Park Do-Joon.”

“Wow…! Who do you think you are?” Han Yu-Na stood up noisily, speechless at Chae Bo-Ra’s words. She was about to turn around to leave when Chae Bo-Ra’s next words rang in her ears.

“Should I spill about Seong-Je?”

“…?!” Han Yu-Na stood frozen, horrified at the name she just heard. Seong-Je was the name of her ex-boyfriend whom she had dated during her trainee days. Of course, he had transferred to another agency and was currently preparing for his debut as a solo singer.

“I have a few photos, too.”

“Photos…?” Han Yu-Na stammered. Just what photos was Chae Bo-Ra referring to? And if Chae Bo-Ra really had those photos in her possession, how did she even get her hands on them?

“You guys look quite chummy, and you even went to a villa together? I saw both of you hugging and kissing; you guys looked really happy.”

“Are you… threatening me?”

“Yes, I am.”

“And do you think… I have nothing on you? Wow, I’m speechless. How pure are you to be threatening me?”

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about. Why don’t you bring some of that evidence to make me understand what you’re getting at?”

Han Yu-Na covered her face with one hand while Chae Bo-Ra smiled with her chin resting on her hands. It was her M.O to grab hold of her opponent’s weakness to keep them in check.

Oh, my, isn’t that Chae Bo-Ra and Han Yu-Na?”

“But the air around them looks strange.”

Han Yu-Na stood there, agonized, amid the surrounding murmurs. It didn’t take long for her to come to a decision by following her heart instead of her mind.

“Do whatever you want,” Han Yu-Na answered.

“…!” Chae Bo-Ra’s eyes widened in surprise.

“I said do whatever you want. Photos? Of us hugging and kissing and looking happy? Of course, we were dating back then and liked each other, so isn’t that a given?”

“Unni, aren’t you forcing yourself?”

“I’m not sure how you got our photos, but do whatever you want.” Han Yu-Na downed the rest of her coffee and continued. “And I don’t want to see Mr. Ha Jae-Gun getting hurt over a brat like you. I truly respect him, and he’s a great person. I don’t want to betray the trust he had given me either.”

Han Yu-Na didn’t give Chae Bo-Ra a chance to answer. She turned around and left immediately.. As soon as she stepped out of the cafe, a cold wind swept past her. It was a timely wind, and she prayed that the freezing wind would freeze her tears before they rolled down her cheeks.

“Thank you for always writing such great articles, Reporter Hyun,” Ha Jae-Gun said after their interview.

Sitting across from him was Hyun Sung-Beom from Weekly Trends. Hyun Sung-Beom smiled and shook his head. “You don’t have to thank me. I’m the one who’s blessed to have so many articles to write on, thanks to you, Mr. Ha.”

The two of them had been maintaining a great relationship ever since their first meeting at the airport. Hyun Sung-Beom was far from an average writer. Ha Jae-Gun liked the man but was also worried if Hyun Sung-Beom would ever succeed in his career.

“I’m starving after talking for so long; what would you like to have?”

“No, you should be busy with your writing, so I shouldn’t impose on you any further. I should get going now.”

Ha Jae-Gun then stood up to send Hyun Sung-Beom out with Rika in his arms. As they crossed midway across the garden, the doorbell rang.

“Who is it?”

Ha Jae-Gun walked ahead of Hyun Sung-Beom and opened the door, his face turning instantly into a state of shock. It was the section chief of the general affairs department he had met at the library during his recent lecture.

Haha, hello, Mr. Ha Jae-Gun.”

“Mr. Yang was disappointed after that day. Anyway, you know that there’s going to be a neighborhood walking competition, right? He’s hoping that you’ll participate in the event.”

“No, I have no intentions of participating.” Ha Jae-Gun rejected flatly, knowing full well of what was coming. He found their unsolicited visit to be quite rude.

“Please participate; there are already huge reactions to your participation on social media.”

“Social media?”

“We announced that we would be inviting you to the competition, and everyone was excited about it. If you don’t participate, the residents will be extremely disappointed. Why don’t you take a look at our district’s social media page?”

Ha Jae-Gun was rendered speechless. They went ahead without asking his opinion or permission; it was as if his participation was already a done deal.

“Please leave.”

“Mr. Ha…”

“I have nothing more to say. Would you like me to reject outright right now?”

“No, no… Um, I will then… wait for your call.” The section chief bowed and turned around to leave.

Hyun Sung-Beom grinned. “He’s talking about the head of the district office, Yang Beom-Shik, right?”

“Do you know him?”

“I haven’t met him personally, but I know this is about his election campaign. He wants to show off his connection with you and get closer to you as well. I can guarantee you Mr. Yang will visit you personally the next time.”

With a slightly worried look, he continued, “But please be careful, Mr. Ha. If you get misled into the political arena, you might unintentionally get pulled into their fights. There are countless people targeting you.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure that doesn’t happen.” At the same time, Ha Jae-Gun recalled his father’s advice: politics, region, religion. These were the three things his father had advised him to stay out of.

“Actually, I received help from them.”

“Help?”

“They’ve become my subject for my novel.”

Just then, a taxi was driving in. Having an inkling as to who would be alighting, Ha Jae-Gun said his goodbyes to Hyun Sung-Beom. “Reporter Hyun, please be safe on the way back.”

“Thank you, Mr. Ha. Please rest well; I will be waiting to hear from you again.”

Hyun Sung-Beom walked past the taxi that was driving in and disappeared down the street. Ha Jae-Gun stood by the roadside with Rika still in his arms. The taxi slowed down and stopped where Ha Jae-Gun stood.

“Hello, Mr. Ha.” Han Yu-Na greeted him. She looked flustered as she opened the car door.

“Why are you out here?”

“Unfortunately, I’m not here to welcome you. I just sent another visitor off. Please come in.” Ha Jae-Gun led Han Yu-Na across his garden, feeling puzzled.

He had received a message from her earlier when he was having an interview with Hyun Sung-Beom, asking for permission to meet him as there was something she had to tell him.

She doesn’t look good, I wonder what happened?’ Even after they stepped into the living room, Han Yu-Na was standing in a daze. Ha Jae-Gun wanted to make some coffee but decided against it and pointed at the sofa.

“Please take a seat. Do you want some coffee?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Ha…”

“Huh? Why are you apologizing out of the blue?”

“I don’t think I can go on I Live Alone.” Han Yu-Na bowed deeply as if asking for forgiveness. She was grateful to him and the people at the agency for helping her out. Ha Jae-Gun had also been treating her with respect even when she was just a nobody, which was exactly why she didn’t want to disappoint him.

“I’m really sorry… I’m really grateful for everything you have done for me, and I know I should be doing my best in return for the favor, but… I’m sorry, Mr. Ha. I really am…”

“I’m not sure what happened, but please take a seat first. Let’s have a talk over some coffee.” Ha Jae-Gun headed to the kitchen to make some coffee.

Han Yu-Na plopped down on the sofa, and Rika looked at Han Yu-Na with shining eyes.

“Rika…?” Han Yu-Na murmured in surprise as she watched Rika approach her with elegant steps. Rika was acting differently compared to when they first met. With shining eyes, Rika pressed Han Yu-Na’s thigh with her tiny paw.

“Have you decided to accept me?” Han Yu-Na carefully reached out. She stroked the cat for a while, and Rika even allowed Han Yu-Na to hug her. Han Yu-Na put her face closer to Rika, and Rika licked her nose with her scratchy tongue.

Chapter 216. Laugh, Why Don’t You (4)

“Seems like Rika isn’t shy anymore.”

“Yes, it’s quite fascinating….” Han Yu-Na answered with pride and joy, the corners of her eyes turning hot as she stroked Rika’s neck.

“Come and have some coffee. Take your time telling me what’s going on.”

Han Yu-Na sat down on the sofa and slowly took a sip of coffee while collecting herself. Ha Jae-Gun did not try to push her; he quietly read his book while waiting for her to start.

“…I just met Chae Bo-Ra.” Han Yu-Na began after drinking around half a cup of coffee.

Ha Jae-Gun looked up. Rika jumped from Ha Jae-Gun’s lap and moved onto Han Yu-Na’s lap.

“I’m not sure where I should start, but… I got to know her when I joined ICU Entertainment and was put in the group debuting as HyperSoda….”

Rika’s warmth calmed Han Yu-Na down, and she continued the story with ease. “My family’s situation became a problem for me, and I needed money urgently back then. While I was still wondering if I should take up a part-time job, Chae Bo-Ra lent me some money. I was really grateful to her, and she was a really good friend to me until she wasn’t…”

Things that Han Yu-Na couldn’t bring herself to tell her family, colleagues, or even her manager were coming out from her now.

Ha Jae-Gun listened to her silently while nodding occasionally with an indifferent expression.

“…And she said that using the photos of me and my ex-boyfriend, Seong-Je, as leverage.” Han Yu-Na grabbed the cup in front of her after finishing her piece. The coffee had turned cold by then.

“Photos, huh…” Ha Jae-Gun mumbled.

After some hesitation, Han Yu-Na then added, “Um, please don’t get me wrong, those aren’t weird photos, just normal….”

“I didn’t…”

Ah, I’m sorry. I have the tendency to get ahead of myself.” Han Yu-Na turned red and looked down.

Ha Jae-Gun smiled and stood up from his seat, picking up the two empty cups. “Just do as you always have. It’s a sensitive period for you now, and that’s why you’re overly concerned about it, but I don’t think it’s much of an issue. Do you really think that you’ve made a mistake dating that guy back then?”

“No.”

“Isn’t that solved then? There’s no need to reveal this yourself, but it’s also not something that you aren’t proud of, isn’t it?”

“Thank you, Mr. Ha….” Han Yu-Na scrunched her tingling nose with a small smile. She never thought that she would feel so relieved after pouring out her feelings. Looking back, she had definitely felt desperate and frantic as she prepared for her debut. She couldn’t get over the smallest and slightest issue during this period.

It’s a good thing I decided to visit Mr. Ha today, Rika.’ Han Yu-Na looked down at Rika. As if understanding her thoughts, Rika looked up at her from her curled-up position. Rika’s shining eyes were so deep that Han Yu-Na felt like she was falling into the abyss.

After a good thirty minutes, Han Yu-Na finally stood up to leave.

Han Yu-Na got into the cab that Ha Jae-Gun had called for her. She smiled at Ha Jae-Gun, looking more relaxed than ever as she said, “Thank you so much for today, Mr. Ha. I apologize for taking up so much of your precious time, too.”

“Don’t say that. Be careful on your way back, and I’ll see you in a few days.”

The cab soon drove off into the distance. Ha Jae-Gun headed back into his house, his expression hardening. He had pretended to be calm and collected in front of Han Yu-Na while they were together, but he was feeling otherwise inside. Anger began boiling within him the moment he heard about Chae Bo-Ra from the younger girl.

“Rika.”

Meow…?

“A person’s malicious intent really knows no bounds.” Ha Jae-Gun hugged Rika and went up to his study. He turned on his laptop and began working on his novel.

The next short story to be added in Market Place was the head of the district office, who had different personalities both inside and out. The model of this main character was Yang Beom-Shik, whom Ha Jae-Gun had first met at his recent lecture held at the library.

The head of the district office decided to appear at the market more often in order to attract public sentiment and build his image. The blatant and soulless activities only garnered a lukewarm response from the people of the market….

Ha Jae-Gun thought it over repeatedly as he came up with an overall storyline. Unlike reality, he wanted to instill hope in his novel. He needed an opportunity that would allow the head of the district office to change humanely.

Why can’t I think of anything?

Could it be because of the story he had just heard? Strangely, it was hard for him to concentrate on the story now. He had been typing and deleting the lines he wrote over and over again. Ha Jae-Gun eventually let out a long sigh and bent his head back as much as possible.

“A person’s malicious intent….” he mumbled as he stared into space. In fact, he had felt it, too, after sending Han Yu-Na off. The faces of a few people had surfaced and stayed in his mind for a while now. There was Haetae Media’s CEO Ma Jong-Goo, Oh Myung-Hoon, whom he had started off on the wrong foot since university, the arrogant Director Woo Jae-Hoon, Assistant Writer Won Ji-Yeon, and even the celebrity Chae Bo-Ra.

He had been trying to shake them off in his head, but his worries only grew deeper by the minute to the extent that he couldn’t focus on writing his short story.

“A person’s malicious intent… Malicious intent….” Still staring into space, Ha Jae-Gun mumbled repeatedly. His eyes turned unfocused while staring at the white space, looking as if he was possessed.

Meow.” Rika stood on her hind legs and scratched at Ha Jae-Gun’s chest.

Ha Jae-Gun then slowly looked down at her, seeing the waver in her eyes. Ha Jae-Gun smiled bitterly as he recognized the worrying look on her face.

“…?!” Just then, a thought hit Ha Jae-Gun like a lightning bolt. His hands reacted faster than his brain could, which reached for the keyboard and began typing away on it.

Gathered every speck of malicious intent…!

Tadadadak! Tadak! Tadadak! Tadak!

His fingers began working, making a sound similar to a heavy rain in midsummer, producing countless words on the document. The words strung into sentences, and the entire world’s malice began to converge and take shape

There was no knowing what he was typing, but it was definitely not his short story. It wasn’t even in the right composition suitable for a novel. Ha Jae-Gun only typed out all the malice he knew on the Word document. He typed away tirelessly, forgetting the flow of time. Rika did not bother Ha Jae-Gun after seeing how immersed he had become and moved to curl up at the end of the table instead of staying on his lap.

The winter sun quickly set, and darkness filled the study as the lights in the room did not turn on. The only light source was coming from the monitor screen and Rika’s eyes. Even so, Ha Jae-Gun did not stop typing. He continued without rest, with all the malice in him flowing out endlessly.

The malice needed to live in this harsh modern society, the malice one needed to stand out, the malice arising from hatred due to difference in standards, the malice that was born for no specific reason….

There was a huge variety of malice in the world. Updated from nov𝒆lbIn.(c)om

Plat!

The study was lit up instantly. Lee Soo-Hee’s jaws dropped as she stood at the door to the study after turning on the switch to the lights. Ha Jae-Gun was still typing away with his back bent, oblivious to the fact that Lee Soo-Hee had arrived after getting off work and was standing behind him.

“What are you working on so focused with the lights off?”

“…When did you come?”

Wow, I’m speechless. You wouldn’t know if a burglar entered your house.” Lee Soo-Hee laughed with absurdity and put down her bag. She hugged Ha Jae-Gun from behind and looked at the screen.

“What are you working on? Market Place?”

“No, not exactly….” Ha Jae-Gun trailed off as he placed a hand on Lee Soo-Hee’s waist. Her bodily scent was his favorite in this world, and it never failed to make his heart flutter. He felt as if all the fatigue in his body had been washed off.

“What is this? It reads weirdly.” Lee Soo-Hee frowned as she reached for the mouse. As she scrolled to the top of the document and scanned the document, the look on her face hardened the more texts she read.

“Writer Ha Jae-Gun, just what have you been writing?”

Um… I’m not sure how to explain this….” Ha Jae-Gun organized his thoughts and slowly continued, “I… gathered all the malice I’ve felt from the people I’ve met so far and put them all together?”

“But why would you write this….”

“I’m not sure either. It suddenly came to mind, and I began writing it without stopping. I somehow created the most evil character in the entire world, so evil that people wouldn’t think that someone like this would actually exist.”

Lee Soo-Hee suddenly noticed that Ha Jae-Gun’s back was drenched in sweat. She reached under his shirt and gently stroked his bare back. She felt his expanded back muscles, and she couldn’t erase her bitter smile at all.

“How hyper-focused were you?”

“I’m always like this.”

“I won’t say anything if you wrote a good one. But if you get too hyper-focused while writing such content, it won’t do you good mentally.”

Ha Jae-Gun smiled as he reached out to his keyboard. Lee Soo-Hee pushed his hands away and sat herself down on his lap, asking, “Then do I have evil intentions doing this?”

Um, I’m not very sure about that….” Ha Jae-Gun tilted his head and placed a hand on Lee Soo-Hee’s thigh. Lee Soo-Hee giggled, feeling ticklish as he reached under her skirt.

“I’ll accept them with open arms if they’re from you.”

“Stop looking at the screen and look at me instead.”

“I am; I just need a moment to save this.”

“Don’t save it.”

Waaahhh.

Lee Soo-Hee pounced and kissed Ha Jae-Gun on the lips. As they fell to the ground in a tangle, Rika walked out of the study without a sound, giving them their privacy.

***

Ha Jae-Gun’s speculation was accurate. Time passed, and it was already New Year’s, but nothing had happened to Han Yu-Na. Everything was quiet with Chae Bo-Ra, and no rumors of her and Seong-Je could be found on the internet.

Han Yu-Na appeared on I Live Alone with Ha Jae-Gun as planned. Her popularity grew exponentially day by day, and her activity as a member of HyperSoda had increased relatively as well. Although she was busy as a bee without much time for rest, Han Yu-Na felt extremely happy.

On one cold January day, articles related to the drama Summer in My 20s, which had hit thirty percent in viewership ratings, were flooding the internet. The laughter in the warm Bucheon office seemed like it wouldn’t stop soon.

“You guys are finally getting married. I’m envious.” Yang Hyun-Kyung mumbled with a scowl, his face full of jealousy. Kang Min-Ho and Jang Eun-Young had just announced their marriage to everyone else.

With eyes shining, Jeon Bong-Yi congratulated the pair. “Congratulations! Where will you be going for your honeymoon?”

Ah, um… we’re going to Guam for four days and three nights.”

“That sounds great. I haven’t had the chance to travel overseas yet.”

“It’s going to be my first time as well. But Eun-Young had traveled a few times to Japan before.” Kang Min-Ho and Jang Eun-Young smiled at each other, their hands held tightly together.

“Actually, we were thinking of skipping the honeymoon altogether since we’re on a tight budget and wouldn’t be able to hit our deadlines. But Mr. Ha made a fuss, insisting that we should go.”

“I have the same thoughts as Mr. Ha. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event. Look at everyone’s reviews on their honeymoon online; it’ll be a shame if you guys don’t go on a honeymoon,” Jeon Bong-Yi said.

“Looks like Bong-Yi really wants to get married.”

“Hehehe, that’s right. I’d love to meet a nice person and get married as soon as possible. I get lonely easily and would love to have a child of my own, too,” Jeon Bong-Yi said with an adorable smile.

Yang Hyun-Kyung, next to her, reflexively raised his hand and swept his fringe.

Jang Eun-Young mumbled, “I don’t even know how we should repay Mr. Ha for this.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Our honeymoon is sponsored by him. He said it’s our wedding gift.”

Gosh, really?!”

“Hey, Jang Eun-Young. Writer Ha said it’s a secret….”

“Who cares? I can’t keep things like this a secret.”

Just then, the main door opened, and Ha Jae-Gun stepped in with Rika in his arms. The writers gathering around stood up immediately and welcomed him.

“Hello, Writer Ha.”

“What are you guys talking about?”

“We were discussing our wedding.”

“Haha, I thought so, watching your expressions.” Ha Jae-Gun put Rika down on the floor and headed to the kitchen.

Kang Min-Ho quickly headed to the kitchen, pushing Ha Jae-Gun aside and picked up a cup. “I bought a new type of coffee; it tastes incredible. Let me make a cup for you.”

“No, I can make myself a cup.”

“Just take a seat; let me do it.” Kang Min-Ho insisted and made a cup of coffee for Ha Jae-Gun.

Ha Jae-Gun took a sip of the fragrant coffee, and his eyes widened instantly. “It smells great, and it tastes great as well.”

“Right?”

“I’m not good with coffee tastes, but it’s great. I’ll be able to work well today thanks to your special coffee.”

“If it really does, I’ll gladly make you a cup of coffee every time you come to the office in the future.”

“I’m just saying it.”

Kang Min-Ho then whispered to Ha Jae-Gun as he sat across from him, “Thank you so much, Writer Ha.”

“I understand what you’re referring to, so enough with the thanks.”

“Thanks to you, we are able to get married and even get ourselves a house on a yearly lease. You even sponsored our honeymoon… I will do my best to return the money for the rent. If it hadn’t been for you, we would have ended up getting a unit by some noisy market and paying monthly rent instead.”

“I’ve already said that you don’t have to rush paying it back.” Ha Jae-Gun stood up and headed to his desk, sitting down in front of his laptop. While he was deciding on what to work on first for the day, Kang Min-Ho’s words from earlier rang in his ears.

“If it hadn’t been for you, we would have ended up getting a unit by some noisy market and paying monthly rent instead.”

Oh, right…!’ Ha Jae-Gun exclaimed silently and snapped his fingers. This was why communication was important. Meeting Kang Min-Ho at the office had allowed him to discover valuable treasure.

A pair of newlyweds were forced to live in the market, not because of work but because of the cheap rent. The cheap rent led them to stay in a shabby rental room located in the noisy market…

Tak! Tadadak! Tadak!

The storyline of a pair of newlyweds was added to the collection of short stories in Market Place. The story was split into two versions, one from the husband’s perspective and the other from the wife’s point of view. Ha Jae-Gun was all smiles as he continued typing out line after line.

I think it’s good enough to end the collection here.’ He thought it would be great to conclude Market Place after the addition of the latest three short stories he had come up with.

Afterward, he would have to work on organizing the American version of The Breath and the ambiguous text he had recently worked on about mankind’s malice.

Should I write it in the form of an essay or a full-length novel…?

Bzzt!

Just then, Ha Jae-Gun’s phone rang. He stopped typing on the keyboard and answered the phone.

“Hello?”

— Mr. Ha, this is Reporter Hyun Sung-Beom. There’s something I have to tell you.

“What is it?”

Curious, Ha Jae-Gun tilted his head to the side. Why would Hyun Sung-Beom, a reporter from the entertainment department, call him all the way from Japan when he was on a business trip there?

Chapter 217. Laugh, Why Don’t You (5)

“Reporter Hyun, didn’t you say you’re in Japan for an interview?”

— Yes, I’m in Fukuoka right now. In fact, I had just received an email from our maknae at work.

Hyun Sung-Beom quickly continued without taking a breather.

— It’s about the incident where your manuscript was deleted.

“My manuscript?”

— The manuscript for the drama Market Place. There are reports of witnesses standing up testifying that they had seen both Won Ji-Yeon and Chae Bo-Ra meeting at a cafe.

Mm, I see….” Ha Jae-Gun was slightly surprised at the unexpected news.

Conscious of himself affecting the other writers, Ha Jae-Gun stepped into the bedroom.

— The part-timer working at the cafe was tight-lipped, but the customers were open to sharing. It wasn’t detailed, but they overheard Chae Bo-Ra mentioning you in the conversation.

“Is that so? What did they hear?”

— Um…

“It’s alright. Please don’t mind me and tell me the truth.”

— Um… This was what they heard Chae Bo-Ra say to Won Ji-Yeon: Do you think Mr. Ha would look out for her, and that her agency writer, director and actors were in deep shit because of Mr. Ha, things like that.

Complex emotions flooded Ha Jae-Gun, and he plopped into a chair. It was now clearer to him that Chae Bo-Ra was the main cause of the incident.

— Our maknae has also met with Won Ji-Yeon. She was happy to hear news of eyewitnesses standing up and even recalled how they looked like that day.

“Seems like she was quite desperate as well. She must have been cornered after getting sued for defamation.”

It had been a while since Park Do-Joon had remembered anything about Won Ji-Yeon. He had only introduced her to a law firm just to help Ha Jae-Gun in the first place. After realizing that there was no chance of winning the case, Park Do-Joon let the incident pass without lingering over it.

Hyun Sung-Beom continued

— She’s not in a good condition right now. Her house was taken from her, and she’s now working as a general manager at a goshitel[1] in Sinrim-dong, receiving 300,000 won a month. Well, if people manage a library, they don’t usually cover your accommodation and food.

“I see,” Ha Jae-Gun said. From his perspective, Won Ji-Yeon wasn’t worthy of his sympathy. She was just someone with nothing to her name but was still an opportunist like Chae Bo-Ra.

— I apologize for bringing this up, but I thought I just had to tell you this.

“Haha… I understand.”

— I would love to help you in any way I can. I’ll do everything I can, so please let me know.

A smile grew on Ha Jae-Gun’s face. He was grateful for Hyun Sung-Beom’s concern despite being all the way in Japan on a business trip.

“I don’t think that’s anything I require your help for, but thank you so much for looking out for me. There’s really nothing in particular I want.”

— Is that so…

“I just thought nothing would actually be resolved, and things would only get noisier from there on. That’s how it seems to me.”

— That’s… true….

Hyun Sung-Beom’s short and intense sigh was heard through the line.

— It’s not easy to turn the tables with just one eyewitness appearing on the field. I feel like I’ve just made you more unsettled instead.

“No, no. It’s related to me, after all, and I’m grateful to hear this from you so quickly as well.”

Ha Jae-Gun turned his chair toward the window and added, “And just in case if you’re going to turn this into an article, you don’t have to be concerned about me.”

— Thank you, Mr. Ha. I’ll have to talk to our maknae more about this once I return to Korea.

“When are you returning? Let me buy you a meal.”

— I should be back in three or four days at the longest. I’ll get a souvenir for you too.

After a few exchanges, Ha Jae-Gun hung up the call. Just then, a small commotion came from outside. Ha Jae-Gun stepped out, wondering who had arrived at the office, and spotted Kwon Tae-Won surrounded by the writers.

“Ah, it’s President Kwon.”

“Hello, Writer Ha.” Kwon Tae-Won smiled brightly and approached Ha Jae-Gun. Following behind him was a man in possibly his thirties. “This is our new employee at Laugh Books. Deputy Lee, please introduce yourself.”

“Hello, Mr. Ha. I am Lee Chan-Sung.” Lee Chan-Sung bowed a deep bow, showing his utmost respect. “I have just joined Laugh Books, and I’m glad to meet you. I look forward to learning from you, and please take care of me.”

“I should be the one saying that.” Ha Jae-Gun shook hands with the new employee and asked, “You must have worked with another publisher before this, right?”

“Yes, um…” Lee Chan-Sung scratched his nose lightly while glancing around, then said, “I was with Haetae Media for a while before coming over.”

Hearing the words Haetae Media threw everyone else off, their eyes widening in an instant. Jeon Bong-Yi’s reaction was the most noticeable. Her teeth were chattering so much that she had to clench her jaws so tight while glaring intensely at Lee Chan-Sung.

He was from Haetae Media…?’ There was no way Jeon Bong-Yi could view the man without prejudice. Thankfully, she managed to receive her overdue royalties thanks to Ha Jae-Gun, otherwise, the discomfort she was feeling would have shown on her face.

“Anyway, it’s nice to meet you,” Ha Jae-Gun greeted the newcomer with spirit while observing Jeon Bong-Yi. “Laugh Books is a really good company. You’ll know immediately after seeing the President for the first time. I’m not saying this because I have signed with them for The Breath.”

Ha Jae-Gun made the group break out into chuckles.

Kwon Tae-Won waited for the laughter to subside, then said, “There’s a lot of calls coming into the office because of you, Writer Ha.”

“Me? What kind of calls were they?”

“They’re from writers who had signed contracts with Haetae Media before, saying that they managed to receive their overdue royalties thanks to you, and would like to get your contact details to thank you personally. “

Ha Jae-Gun smiled an embarrassed smile. Just who was the first to share this news on the internet? If it weren’t for the writers in the office, it would probably be one of the employees from Haetae Media, but there was no way of knowing the truth.

Kang Min-Ho chimed in, “Have you seen the post that was circulating the internet with the title: Dignity of Writer Ha Jae-Gun?”

“No, I haven’t. There’s such a post?”

“Look at this.” Min-Ho searched for the post on his laptop and showed it to everyone else who gathered around him.

[I heard Writer Ha Jae-Gun putting his foot down, telling them not to take advantage of the poor writers, and that he’ll take the company down if they didn’t pay the overdue royalties. That’s why Haetae Media reacted swiftly. So all the writers who have received their overdue royalties should thank Writer Ha.]

“…”

Ha Jae-Gun dropped his jaw, finding it absurd. Although there was some truth in it, most of the content in the post was exaggerated. The comments under that post were much more of an entertaining read.

– Miyal: Seems like there’s a writer from his office who had published their novel with Haetae Media. That’s why he stepped up, isn’t it?

– SweetKyeong-Jin: But didn’t Ha Jae-Gun publish the Pezellon series with Haetae Media? Doesn’t that mean he’s on good terms with them?

– YooDong1: Nonsense;;; I heard from someone I know who’s working there that their president and the department head had knelt before him;;;

– Jeriam: Upstairs, for real??? Woah, incredible kekeke

– WoodenHorse: Just what the heck is he??? Seems like the photo of Master Pizza’s CEO kneeling before him in the past wasn’t photoshopped /shiver

– SeoDam: Please tell me how I can join Writer Ha Jae-Gun’s office.

“Wait, what absurd nonsense is this…? Kneeling?”

“That’s how the internet is. But don’t worry too much; there are almost no negative comments.”

“Ah, seriously. How did this spread? It’s not from our office, so that means it came from Haetae Media.”

“But it’ll be strange if the story leaked from one of them; wouldn’t it be considered a team kill?”

The writers chimed in one after the other, and the commotion grew. Lee Chan-Sung pretended to head to the toilet sneakily with sweat running down his back.

That’s why I shouldn’t drink and go online…!’ Lee Chan-Sung washed his face with cold water so much that the skin on his face could almost come off. Either way, he didn’t feel much regret since he had written it out of respect for Ha Jae-Gun in the first place. Lee Chan-Sung sneered at his face, which had turned red.

“How can you still call yourself a manager?!”

“I’m really sorry! She said she was tired and wanted to be alone, but suddenly…!” Chae Bo-Ra’s manager could not raise his head before the department head like a student getting punished, shivering in place.

“You call that an excuse?! How could you leave her alone just because of that?! Go, leave now, punk!”

“I’m sorry, sir. I’ll fly over to Fukuoka right now and bring her back immediately.” Chae Bo-Ra’s manager bowed repeatedly.

The department head was fuming so badly, with his hands on his hips and letting out a heavy sigh while looking at the ceiling. He knew Chae Bo-Ra’s character, so he couldn’t put all the blame on her manager alone. “It’s such a crucial period now, that crazy brat…!”

They wouldn’t have been this anxious if she had mentioned it early. Just what was her motive for flying to Japan without any notice? Was it as per the one-liner message she had left for her manager?

Bzzt!

His phone rang in his pocket. It was a call that he had been waiting for, so he quickly answered it.

“Yeah, did you find out?”

— I don’t think it’s related to Director Cho Cheol-Won; he flew to Thailand to play golf.

“Are you sure?”

— Yes. With See&Good’s recent acquisition, things had been chaotic for him for a while. I’ve seen photos of him there, too.

“Alright, got it.”

The department head hung up the call, tilting his head. He knew that Director Cho Cheol-Won from See&Good was Chae Bo-Ra’s sponsor. There had been several crises, and each time, the CEO and department head would use their power to control the media as Chae Bo-Ra’s marketability was quite significant.

Was it really just a vacation…?’ he wondered with slight relief. It was comforting to know that she did not accompany Director Cho to Thailand.

“Keep calling her.” The department head pointed at the manager. “If she answers, make sure you figure out where she is, and then go over to bring her back. Do your job properly, punk. How else can you work here for the rest of your life?”

“I’ll keep that in mind, sir. I’ll do it right.”

“Don’t be all words.”

The manager was still trembling in fear. The department head felt apologetic inside and lowered his tone. “Why are you skin and bones? Have you been eating regularly?”

“Y-yes… sir.”

The department head then stuffed a 100,000 won cash cheque into the manager’s pocket. “Go have some good food.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t be intimidated after getting reprimanded, too. Stand up straight, punk. I know you’re having a hard time, but it’s still your job, after all. You should manage your job well and try to resolve the issues.”

“Yes, I will keep that in mind. I’m really sorry.”

The department head patted the latter’s shoulder and left. All alone now, the manager whipped out his phone and dialed Chae Bo-Ra’s number. He made one, two, and a third call. It was on the fourth time after persistence when Chae Bo-Ra finally answered the phone.

— Ah, what is it?

“Bo-Ra, why are you doing this to me?”

— What did I do? I sent you a message saying that I’m going to Japan for a vacation, didn’t I?

“I’m your manager… You should let me know early so that we can discuss about it.”

— What’s there to discuss? Would I get cast if I discuss anything with you? Or will my commercial contracts get renewed? I can’t kill time for too long by just doing yoga at home. I’m on the verge of going crazy the past few days.

“The president is fuming, and I just got reprimanded by the department head, too. Come back to Korea, Bo-Ra. You’re on a hiatus now; what if you get into trouble while you’re out—”

A sharp snort from Bo-Ra interrupted him.

— Why are you saying it like that? People will misunderstand and think that I’m a troublemaker. Ugh, just in case I get into trouble, at least I’m at a place where no one knows me! I’ll hang out on my own and go back when it’s time, so don’t call me! Bye!

Beep!

“Bo-Ra! Bo-Ra! That bitch seriously…!” he cursed unconsciously. He suppressed the urge to smash his phone and dialed Chae Bo-Ra’s number once more. He roared like a beast when the phone informed him that Chae Bo-Ra’s phone was turned off.

***

“Reporter Hyun, aren’t you going to eat?”

“You can go ahead first. I still have something missing from the perfume interview, so I’ll head back to the hotel first.”

“You’re so diligent wherever you are. I’ll see you later back at the hotel then.”

“Okay. Don’t get drunk on sake alone out there again.” Hyun Sung-Beom parted ways with his junior and headed back to the hotel.

His footsteps were light as he traversed the streets of Japan after doing good media coverage of the Japanese girl group with an upcoming concert in Korea. He could do a good write-up on it. Just as he stopped at the traffic light at a quiet intersection…

Hmm…?” Hyun Sung-Beom squinted. He looked across the street and saw a familiar-looking man in his mid-forties. “Who is that? He looks strangely familiar….”

The pedestrian light turned green. Hyun Sung-Beom stepped onto the crossroad, and as the distance between him and the familiar-looking man narrowed, he was able to get a clearer view of the man’s face.

Ah! DongMyeong Networks!’ Hyun Sung-Beom finally recalled and clapped his hand in exclamation.

DongMyeong Networks was a company that produces TV shows, specifically TV dramas. The man he saw was the company’s CEO, Lee Dong-Myeong.

Why is he in Japan? Should I say hello?’ Hyun Sung-Beom had met the man a couple of times while visiting the broadcasting station. Seeing the man in casual attire got Hyun Sung-Beom thinking that he wasn’t in Japan on business. Hyun Sung-Beom pulled out his name card and approached Dong-Myeong.

Just then…

“Did I make you wait for a long time?”

A woman entered his line of sight. Hyun Sung-Beom was so surprised to see the woman that he immediately hid in the crowd.

W-what… is this?’ The coquettish woman holding Dong-Myeong’s hand tightly was someone he recognized. Dong-Myeong swatted her hand away lightly and looked around worriedly.

Hyun Sung-Beom gulped and opened the camera app on his phone. His reporter instinct had kicked in. He had to ponder over their relationship, but he had to take photos of them first. He pressed the capture button on his phone incessantly, capturing dozens of photos in just a few seconds.

1. Otherwise, also known as goshiwons are similar to off-campus dormitories with small private rooms, large enough to fit just a single bed, small desk, mini fridge, and maybe an ensuite bathroom. They were originally meant as a place for students to study for exams, but are also open for rent to people from all walks of life. ?

Chapter 218. Laugh, Why Don’t You (6)

“Be careful of your behavior in public.”

“Gosh, no one’s gonna look. Why is our CEO so shy.”

“That’s why I asked to meet at the swimming pool.”

“We can’t always do this, so why don’t you cheer up? Let’s go.”

Hyun Sung-Beom felt like his heart was going to explode. He recalled the words from a senior reporter named Cha Hyung-Jin, who told him over a drinking session that exclusives are chanced upon without notice.

“Have you had lunch?”

“I starved myself just to eat with the CEO, but I’m also on a diet currently.”

“You don’t have any more weight to lose.” Dong-Myeong and Bo-Ra walked down the street together as they chatted.

The moment Hyun Sung-Beom was about to secretly chase after them, a call from his senior Cha Hyung-Jin came in on his phone, and the camera app was deactivated.

“Hello, senior. I’ll call you back in a bit.” Hyun Sung-Beom said into the phone with his eyes still on his target. As usual, Cha Hyung-Jin sounded as sarcastic as ever.

— Why? Seems like you got yourself a scoop?

“Yes, I did.”

— Really? What is it?

“I’ll call you back soon. You’ll definitely fall from your chair after seeing this.” The camera turned back on. In the middle of the shot was Dong-Myeong and Bo-Ra standing side by side.

Hyun Sung-Beom clenched his teeth and continued to go after them stealthily. It was a great feat for him as a reporter, but Bo-Ra had just provoked the wrong person.

***

There was a vending machine and a chair at the end of the corridor of EBC Radio Station. Ha Jae-Gun would rest there whenever he had time left. Even now, he had some time left before his program started and was getting a coffee for himself.

Damn, I left my wallet in the car….’ Ha Jae-Gun was in a pickle as he rummaged through his pocket for a 100-won coin. He looked around, hoping to see someone he knew in the area, and his eyes grew.

“Hello, Mr. Ha.” Park Hye-Sang approached him with a smile. She still looked prim and proper, as expected of the representative announcer of EBC Broadcasting Station.

“Hello, Ms. Hye-Sang. It’s been a while.”

“Yes, it has. It’s a new year, too. Are you here because of Writer’s Night?”

“Yes, that’s right. What about you?”

“I’m here as a guest instead of a show host for Baroque Music.” Park Hye-Sang smiled, her eyes turning into a pair of crescent moons. She pointed at the vending machine and asked, “Are you getting coffee?”

Ah, yes… You’re here for coffee as well, right? But I forgot to bring my wallet….” Ha Jae-Gun searched his empty pockets again.

Park Hye-Sang unzipped her wallet and stepped forward. “You looked like you were getting coffee.”

Ah, you already saw me…? That’s embarrassing.”

“You paid for mine the last time, so let me buy you one this time. They sell cold coffee here. Do you want that?”

“Yes, please.”

Two cups of coffee were made one after the other. Park Hye-Sang was about to bend over to get coffee while grabbing the ends of her skirt, but Ha Jae-Gun was a step ahead and pulled them out first.

“Thank you.”

“I’m the one getting a free drink, so at least I should do the serving.”

The two of them sat beside each other on a long bench. Park Hye-Sang’s eyes were glued to the condensed window as she said, “You’re going to get married this year?”

“Yes, that’s most likely the case.”

“Your fiancée is beautiful. Everyone on social media is fussing about why she’s just an employee at a game company.”

Haha, that’s true. Unlike her looks, she’s not good at showing her good points unless it’s her own expertise.”

“You must send me a wedding invitation.”

“I definitely will. I can’t imagine everyone else’s reactions if Ms. Hye-Sang comes.”

It had dawned on him that they had aged another year, so the two of them looked quite at ease while conversing. There were loud and soft footsteps ringing from the end of the corridor occasionally, but aside from that, the cup of coffee they were having in the quiet and cozy lounge was delicious.

“Ms. Hye-Sang, what have you been doing….”

“Then, Mr. Ha, are you going to….”

Both of them broke into a chuckle as they started at the same time.

“Please go ahead, Mr. Ha.”

“It’s nothing, so please speak first, Ms. Hye-Sang.”

“Mine isn’t that important. I was just curious about what you have been working on recently.”

Just as Ha Jae-Gun was about to answer her question, the producer stepped into the corridor and waved his hand at Ha Jae-Gun. It was a signal that they were ready for the broadcast.

“I’m sorry, but I think I have to head in first. I will reply to you over the air later.”

“Sure, Mr. Ha. Good luck.” Park Hye-Sang raised her fists, cheering for him.

Ha Jae-Gun raised his fists in response as well, then stood up to leave. His footsteps were filled with energy.

***

“Honey, please peel another apple for me.”

“I am already peeling one, ma’am.”

A classic scene was playing on the TV in the dark living room. It was deep into the night, and most people were sleeping. Many apartments outside the terrace had their lights turned off, with the exception of a couple.

“You should sleep now,” Oh Myung-Suk said as he returned with a plate of apples. Chae Yoo-Jin took the plate with a smile as she stayed lying on the sofa. “I’m watching this so that I can fall asleep.”

“Is this Casablanca?”

“Yeah, I can watch it over and over again. Ingrid Bergman is so pretty.”

“I find the ending so lonesome that I couldn’t bear to watch it again,” Oh Myung-Suk replied and looked at the organized living room.

It was an apartment that both of them had settled down in. They had used the day to deep clean the entire place. The 38-pyeong apartment was not small, but instead of hiring someone to clean the place, Oh Myung-Suk still chose to clean the entire place personally for the sake of Chae Yoo-Jin and their unborn child.

“Won’t watching this be bad for the child?”

“Gosh, that’s needless worry. It’s not even a horror movie.”

“How can they learn about farewell even before coming out into the world?”

Uh, mm… That sounds quite plausible.” Chae Yoo-Jin mumbled as she caressed her womb and eventually turned the TV off.

She leaned on Oh Myung-Suk’s shoulder, smiling. She was the happiest woman in the world right now. “I have a feeling that I’m always forgetting something.”

“You must be forgetting to sleep. Let’s go to sleep.” Oh Myung-Suk held Chae Yoo-Jin’s hand and gently pulled her up to her feet. As she was about to head to the bedroom, she clapped her hands out of the blue.

“Ah, I just remembered. Writer Ha’s radio is today.”

“Ah, Writer’s Night?” Oh Myung-Suk quickly turned on the radio. Ha Jae-Gun’s broadcast was important to him as well. He had been so busy cleaning the entire day that he had completely forgotten about Ha Jae-Gun’s radio broadcast.

“Hurry up and get the correct frequency. It’s about to end soon.”

“Wait a bit, it’s coming soon.”

[…The next thing your readers are looking forward to would be your new work. What have you been working on recently?]

[Mm, yes. Firstly, I have been working diligently on the remaining short stories to add to the Market Place collection. I’ll be able to combine all of them into one book after adding three more of those short stories.]

[As a reader, I’m also looking forward to your new work. Although the novel hasn’t been released yet, one of the short stories was changed into a three-part drama, right?]

[Yes, that’s right. I rewrote the completed short story into a scenario for the drama.]

Oh Myung-Suk and Chae Yoo-Jin sat back down on the sofa, listening intently to the radio show. The voices of the host and Ha Jae-Gun alternated throughout the night.

[The drama has received a lot of positive responses. Although it was a one-act play, the viewership ratings sprung up to the double digits. Wait, I’ve got some information here… Yes, it’s 14%. How did you feel at that point in time?]

[I was surprised. I had my previous work, Summer in My 20s, turned into a movie. I think this is the power of the title.]

[Power of the title? What do you mean by that?]

[Everyone around me says the same thing, that I have a bad naming sense for my work. The original title for Market Place was The Market and Its People. It was rejected for being too old-fashioned, and hence, Market Place is the official title now.]

The host burst into laughter. Even Oh Myung-Suk and Chae Yoo-Jin laughed out loud as well. They could even imagine Ha Jae-Gun’s serious look behind the scenes.

[Are you working on something else aside from Market Place?]

[I’m preparing to adapt The Breath, which was published under my pen name Poongchun-Yoo, into other media forms. I’ll be able to share more when plans for The Breath are finalized. Other than that…I have something else I’ve started working on, but it’s still quite ambiguous to share at this stage.]

[Ambiguous?]

[I began thinking about people’s malice recently. It might be the same for everyone. I have met a lot of people throughout my life, and not all of them are friendly. It made me unknowingly reflect on the malice that I’ve felt so far.]

“Have you heard anything about this writing from Writer Ha ?”

“No, not yet,” Oh Myung-Suk replied with a serious look. One of his cheeks twitched, as he never knew that he would one day hear news of Ha Jae-Gun’s new novel through the radio rather than in person or during a call.

However, it was natural for him not to be updated, as he had been busy finding an apartment to stay with Chae Yoo-Jin as well as organizing things with her, so he only had the time to call Ha Jae-Gun a couple of times to ask how he was doing.

Oh Myung-Suk felt apologetic toward Ha Jae-Gun.

[People’s malice… Just hearing about this makes shivers go down my back. Is it going to be a full-length novel? I’m curious about its genre as well.]

[Nothing’s firmed up yet. I am currently gathering all the malice I’ve felt from everyone I’ve met so far and trying to shape the characters first. It’s only after that that I can consider the genre or storyline.]

[Seems like the main character is definitely a villain?]

[You’re indeed sharp.]

Oh Myung-Suk held a pen in hand and diligently summarized Ha Jae-Gun’s words so that he could get straight to the point when he met Ha Jae-Gun to talk about the new work. Ha Jae-Gun’s voice continued to flow through the speakers.

[In fact, there are two editors whom I like, and I am learning from them. I need to discuss this with one of them, but he’s been extremely busy lately, so I couldn’t contact him.]

[Why don’t you say something to him using this opportunity.]

[Thank you. Um, our dear Editor-in-Chief, Oh, it’s been a while since we met and had drinks. I miss you. Please accept my pour, and pay for all the drinks.]

Oh Myung-Suk stopped writing and sniggered. Chae Yoo-Jin hugged him from beside him and said, “I can’t meet Writer Ha because of the baby.”

“Yeah. Hmm, people’s malice…That sounds scary.” This chapter is updat𝓮d by nov(e)(l)biin.com

Oh Myung-Suk looked at the clock and gathered the time for the radio show to end. He began drafting an email to be sent to Ha Jae-Gun. Although Oh Myung-Suk had been chased out of the house, he was still the editor-in-chief of OongSung, and Ha Jae-Gun was their most precious writer.

It was about time for him to make a move.

“No, absolutely not.”

“Why not, senior? Just why?”

Hyun Sung-Beom was at the rooftop of the office building of Weekly Trends headquarters. His senior from the same entertainment department Cha Hyung-Jin was with him and was taking out his third stick of cigarette to puff.

“Do you know how much advertisements they paid us at DongMyeong?”

“How does it matter? Should reporters be wary of such things when writing articles?”

“The boss hates it! Don’t you know that our boss is extremely close to CEO Lee Dong-Myeong? Why are you so clueless? Do you want to get blamed for everything?”

“Sure, I’ll take on full responsibility.”

Ah, seriously, Hyun Sung-Beom…!” Cha Hyung-Jin blew out white smoke from his mouth. He sneaked side glances, seemingly having something to say, but eventually, he did not come clean and changed the topic. “Put your hand on your heart.”

“What are you going to say now?” Hyun Sung-Beom asked.

“Just do it, brat.”

With a grim look, Hyun Sung-Beom put his hand on his chest as instructed. “Done. What now?”

“It’s hot, right?”

“Of course, I’m so mad now.”

“Your heart is originally hot, stupid!” Cha Hyung-Jin threw out his cigarette butt and yelled. “I’ve said this countless times, but you’re not the type to become a reporter. Do you think you’re just purely getting a scoop here?”

“What exactly do you want to say, senior?”

“I understand that you’re prepared to take responsibility and face the consequences. But I’m asking why must you reveal this? Is it because of Ha Jae-Gun?”

“…!”

“Seems like I’m right. Otherwise, you would have denied it immediately. You should calm down, brat!”

Hyun Sung-Beom took the cigarette from Cha Hyung-Jin and smoked it out in less than thirty seconds.

“You should smoke something better. And I still haven’t changed my mind.”

“Hey, Hyun Sung-Beom!”

“Just don’t tell the chief first. I’ll get going first.” Hyun Sung-Beom left the rooftop without hesitation.

Hyung-Jin still could not stop his junior and stood there in a daze. He watched as Hyun Sung-Beom left in the distance, and his past self surfaced in his eyes.

The scoop made it into the breaking news at around noon that day. The article written by Reporter Hyun Hyun Sung-Beom quickly dominated the major portal sites and social media.

Chapter 219. Laugh, Why Don’t You (7)

[Exclusive Scoop! Celebrity Chae Bo-Ra caught at a swimming pool of a certain hotel in Fukuoka. She’s with a man! Who is he?]

[Photo 1, A man affectionately holding Chae Bo-Ra’s hands as she does backstrokes.]

[Photo 2, Both of them were holding hands while lying next to each other on the sunbeds.]

[Photo 3, The couple was seen returning to the hotel after their swimming session.]

[The man in his forties caught in photos with Chae Bo-Ra was identified as Mr. Lee, the CEO of a famous drama production company in Korea.]

“Wait, what’s this?” Woo Tae-Bong’s jaws dropped as he read the news article on his phone. He was currently at the filming site of Storm and Gale, with actor Park Do-Joon sitting next to him, taking a rest after a long scene.

“Why are you so surprised?”

“You should read this yourself.” Woo Tae-Bong showed Park Do-Joon his screen.

Park Do-Joon laid his nonchalant gaze on the screen at first, but his eyes soon grew wide in shock at the content he was reading and snatched Woo Tae-Bong’s phone from his hand.

“Bo-Ra…?”

“Her secret was revealed eventually. Hey, Do-Joon. They don’t seem to be in a normal relationship.”

Park Do-Joon scrolled down the article and checked out each photo attached with it in detail. Woo Tae-Bong wasn’t lying; the man and Chae Bo-Ra in the photo were both either holding hands or linking arms together.

There was no way this could be called a business-only relationship.

“Who is this man?”

“It’s not certain, but I think it’s Lee Dong-Myeong.”

“Lee Dong-Myeong? The CEO of Dongmyeong Networks?”

“Yeah, you met the man a few times, right? Can you not feel it even with that mosaic on the photo?”

“Is he her sponsor?”

“Probably.” The surprise on Woo Tae-Bong’s face lingered. “I’m curious how she’ll overcome this crisis. The photos are concrete proof. Bo-Ra is usually quite the sly fox, but with these photos, it’ll be tough for her to wriggle out of this so easily.”

“…This is astounding, really. She’s just twenty-one.” Park Do-Joon clicked his tongue in amazement.

Chae Bo-Ra’s name and the incident had already dominated the real-time search rankings, and the photos had gone viral on social media as well. The majority of the comments were criticizing Chae Bo-Ra more than they were protecting her.

“You’d better be careful from now on, Do-Joon,” Woo Tae-Bong said as he patted Park Do-Joon’s shoulder. “Don’t go near this mess, and don’t provoke her either. You won’t know what she’ll do if you start forcing her into a corner. You get me, right?”

“Don’t worry.” Park Do-Joon returned Woo Tae-Bong his phone and stood up. “What’s there for me to do when she’s eventually going to self-destruct?”

Park Do-Joon’s break had just ended as well, as an announcement rang through the loudspeaker, announcing the resumption of the filming.

Park Do-Joon smirked as he headed back to the scene, curious about what kind of expression Bo-Ra had on her face now.

***

“Yes, sir. I-I am on my way to the airport now….” Sitting in the backseat of the cab was Chae Bo-Ra was as pallid as a ghost. She sounded obedient, different from her usual haughty tone of voice. She felt intimidated by the ongoing situation.

— Are you crazy?

The department head roared into the phone. Things would have been different if the other party were Director Cho Cheol-Won from See&Good. Unfortunately, she had kept her personal relationship with Lee Dong-Myeong from Dongmyeong Networks under wraps from the company.

— Celebrities should use TV shows to raise their own profiles and not through such scandals!

“I’m really sorry…! I… I have nothing…! Sobbb…!” Chae Bo-Ra whimpered and began sobbing. The Japanese driver sneaked glances at Chae Bo-Ra through the rearview mirror.

— When did this start? When did you start seeing Lee Dong-Myeong?

“It hasn’t been long…. Really.”

— You’re really crazy. Stay put at the airport.

The department head hung up the call even before Chae Bo-Ra could reply. She gripped her phone tightly, with her head dropped. She was clenching her jaws so tightly that her teeth were almost on the verge of breaking. It was the first time she had met such a shocking crisis throughout her career as a celebrity.

Hyun Sung-Beom from Weekly Trends…?’ Her teeth chattered in anger at the murderous intent toward the unfamiliar reporter. Her tears of anger flowed incessantly down her cheeks. She had made a mistake lowering her guard, thinking that they were staying at a remote hotel in Fukuoka.

She should have paid more attention to their surroundings, and she should have met him secretly in the hotel rather than outside. Bo-Ra shuddered with regret and leaned her head over and back.

Bzzt!

“Ah!” Chae Bo-Ra dropped her phone from the sudden vibration of her phone. The lit screen showed the name Cho Cheol-Won. Chae Bo-Ra picked up her phone with trembling hands and pressed the answer button after much hesitation.

“Y-yes… Director.”

— Is it true?

“Pardon? W-what…?”

— Don’t act like a fool before me. There’s no way you haven’t seen the news yet. That’s Lee Dong-Myeong, right? You told me you’re off on a healing vacation, but you actually went there to meet Lee Dong-Myeong?

Director Cho’s voice sounded more icy cold than ever. It was the first time Chae Bo-Ra had ever heard such coldness in his voice.

Chae Bo-Ra placed a hand on her seemingly about-to-explode heart and began making excuses for herself. “It’s a misunderstanding, Director. I-it really is a misunderstanding. It’s not the truth.”

— Why don’t you tell me the truth? Be prepared to face the consequences if you can’t make me understand what’s going on.

“I-it was a coincidental meeting. I didn’t know we were staying in the same hotel. I’ve only met him a few times at the office….” Chae Bo-Ra swallowed a few times as her throat grew parched.

“The photo was taken at a weird angle, Director. I’ll admit that I was playful, but I am bad at swimming, so he somehow held my hand at that time.”

— Somehow held your hand? And you guys held hands, too, while lying side by side on the sunbed? Then why did you guys link arms?

“The photo was taken weirdly! My bracelet dropped on the floor when we were on the sunbed, and the photo was taken when our hands overlapped. As… for us linking arms, CEO Lee offered to buy me a gift, saying that it was fate for us to meet outside of Korea…! That photo was taken just when I was pulling apart…!”

— Are you asking me to believe that?

“Please believe me, Director. I feel really wronged and scared. I’ll crumble if you do this to me as well. Please, please… Sobbb…!” Chae Bo-Ra sobbed uncontrollably as her tears flowed. Her trivial acting skills proved to be quite useful in situations like this.

Director Cho resigned and chose to accept her words as the truth and let out a sigh.

— Are… you sure?

A grim question followed.

Bo-Ra stifled her tears and replied, “Yes, Director. You know me.”

Chae Bo-Ra was drawing out her dramatic acting skills that had not been shown in any of her works. Dealing with Lee Dong-Myeong was a problem for later. She had received a lot from Director Cho until now, and if she didn’t want to lose everything, she had to reassure Director Cho first before anything else.

— I seem to have made my judgment too hastily.

After a few moments, Director Cho’s voice became gentle.

— Even so, you’re not a kid anymore, must you behave like that? You’re a celebrity on top of that.

“I’m sorry, Director. I’m deeply reflecting on myself.”

— All right, let’s talk more when we meet. Be careful on your way back, and call me immediately once you’re back at the apartment.

“Yes, Director. I’ll see you soon.”

Chae Bo-Ra’s sobbing stopped as soon as the call ended. She wiped her teary eyes with tissue and regained her composure in just the blink of an eye.

This might be for the better. Talks on the drama from Dongmyeong Network might progress just to cover up this scandal.

She definitely didn’t have any bad thoughts. Twenty-four hours wasn’t enough for her when she was busy occupying her mind with good thoughts. She began to see the outline of the airport in the distance outside the car window.

***

[Chae Bo-Ra’s official statement: The rumors are not true. I will reveal the truth in detail through a press conference soon.]

Chae Bo-Ra’s agency and Dongmyeong Networks immediately made an official statement and published it in an article as soon as Bo-Ra arrived in Korea.

Shortly after her statement was published, the fans who were still on the fence about the issue turned to support Chae Bo-Ra eagerly, who had been steadily building up a positive image through various TV programs.

– Look~ Our angelic Bo-Ra wouldn’t unni won’t do such dirty deeds~ Did the jobless anti-fans get a job today as well?

– Kyaa~ Bo-Ra noona’s swift announcement is great. She’s not guilty of anything, so that’s why she could respond so swiftly. ^^

– Those insidious reporters be taking photos from weird angles just to deceive the public should learn their lesson. Weekly Trends is trash, too.

– It’s wrong as well if someone is too nice…. How can they bear to bother someone who has been having a hard time earlier this year because of assistant writer Won Ji-Yeon? How can Bo-Ra noona meet anyone else if she’s scared of those reporters?

– Yeah;;; Bo-Ra unni might just get anthropophobia if this goes on t.t Cheer up, unni. There are many fans who trust and support you!

“Just one official statement, and the responses are…!” Hyun Sung-Beom’s teeth chattered as he read the comments left on social media.

His senior, Cha Hyung-Jin, downed the last glass of soju and scoffed, “Well, her image on TV is obviously that of an angel to everyone else.”

“But still, Senior. How can the reactions be this way when such photos are shown? How can you accidentally hold hands? And they’re meeting for the first time? Wow, seeing how she’s coming up with excuses makes me think that she can even tie shoelaces with her tongue now.” Hyun Sung-Beom then lamented about how he couldn’t take more photos at the hotel.

Had he taken a photo of them entering a hotel room, Chae Bo-Ra’s excuse might not have worked now.

“Just stop here already.” Cha Hyung-Jin stirred the bottom of his bowl of rice soup and added, “Dongmyeong Networks, ICU, and See&Good all contacted us. The chief isn’t going to pursue this any further, so don’t push it any further as well. Consider yourself real lucky, punk.”

“…”

“He said to lay low for a while, and I even got scolded because of you. Why did you not appear in the office?”

“I’m going to get scolded if I were to go there, so why should I?”

“You’re such a glib talker… You’d better pay for this meal, punk.”

Bzzt!

Hyun Sung-Beom was about to stand up when his phone rang. He checked the name on the caller ID and answered it immediately, “Mr. Tae-Bong?”

— Hello, Reporter Hyun. How have you been?

“Of course, I’m doing well.”

— It must be chaotic at your office.

“Well, not really. I’ve prepared myself to a certain extent as well.”

As he grew closer to Ha Jae-Gun, Hyun Sung-Beom had also gotten to know his close friend Park Do-Joon. Of course, he naturally got into contact with his manager, Woo Tae-Bong.

— I’ve just sent you an email.

Woo Tae-Bong’s serious voice traveled over the line. Standing at the cashier counter, Hyun Sung-Beom wedged his phone between his ear and shoulder and pulled out his wallet while asking, “An email?”

— I’ll leave it to you to decide how you’ll want to use its content. But I hope you won’t ask about its source.

“Mm, I see…. I understand.” Hyun Sung-Beom didn’t probe any further, as he could just make a decision after verifying the contents of the email.

The call soon ended, and Cha Hyung-Jin finally asked, “Who was that?”

“I’ll tell you later.”

“Are you hiding things from me now?”

“I’m afraid that you’ll be put in a tight spot later, that’s why. You don’t have to feel frustrated.” Hyun Sung-Beom excused himself to use the washroom and accessed his email there. Indeed, a new email had entered his inbox with an attachment.

What did he send?

Hyun Sung-Beom opened the email with curiosity. There were roughly ten photos attached to the email, and all ten of them were laid with the autumn scenery as their background.

“…!”

Hyun Sung-Beom’s mouth slowly dropped to the floor as he checked out each photo.

***

“Writer Ha, do you still remember me? It’s been a while.”

“Hello. It’s nice to see you again ever since the gathering at Star Books. How has your writing been going recently?”

The vast wedding hall of Kang Min-Ho and Jang Eun-Young’s wedding was bustling with guests. As it was the wedding of two writers, most invited guests were writers as well, and most of them had gathered around Ha Jae-Gun.

“Is the issue with Haetae Media true? Did you really step up?”

“I felt so relieved. A senior at my office had also signed with them and said that they received their royalties recently as well. They’ve been raving about wanting to treat Writer Ha to a meal.”

“It’s really amazing to see you here, Writer Ha. You’re not just a writer but a celebrity now as well. I Live Alone was really entertaining. Han Yu-Na was so cute…”

“I heard that there’s an after-party today, is it true? Today’s a happy day, so you’re going to stay until the end, right? You’re not allowed to run off early again.”

Ha Jae-Gun smiled shyly and nodded to them. Today was both Kang Min-Ho and Kang Eun-Young’s wedding, and they were the main stars of the day, so the attention they were giving him was quite burdensome.

“I’ll see all of you later after the wedding.” Ha Jae-Gun managed to escape from the group of writers. As he took a breather, he met Yang Hyun-Kyung standing blankly at the sink in the washroom.

“What are you doing standing here?”

Ah, Jae-Gun hyung. The live broadcast of Chae Bo-Ra’s press conference just started. I’m very curious to hear what she has to say.”

“Why are you watching that when you’re at a wedding? Let’s go now. The wedding’s going to start soon.” Ha Jae-Gun grabbed Yang Hyun-Kyung by his shoulders and turned him toward the entrance. He had zero interest in Chae Bo-Ra. Instead of a thoughtless celebrity, he was much more interested in the wedding of the two writers he cherished.

Hmm, I’ll watch the video after that then.” Hyun-Kyung suppressed his curiosity and dropped his phone.

The hand of a reporter shot up just before Yang Hyun-Kyung was about to turn it off.

The camera zoomed in on the reporter’s name tag—Weekly Trends Reporter Hyun.

Chapter 220. Laugh, Why Don’t You (8)

“We’ll have a Q&A segment later. Please listen to Ms. Chae Bo-Ra’s official statement first.” Chae Bo-Ra’s manager said into the microphone.

Chae Bo-Ra’s head was hanging low. She looked glum as she sat next to her manager.

Her facial expression is quite the sight.

Hyun Sung-Beom snickered as he stood amongst the reporters gathered under the stage. Now that he had some concrete evidence on hand, Chae Bo-Ra seemed much more detestable than before.

Bzzt!

It was a call from Cha Hyung-Jin. Hyun Sung-Beom took a while to consider whether to answer but ultimately brought the phone to his ear. Cha Hyung-Jin was the type to call relentlessly until he answered the former’s call.

“Yes, senior.”

— Where are you right now?

“At Chae Bo-Ra’s press conference venue.”

— Why did you go there?! The deal’s done, so come back to the office right now.

“It’s all spilled milk. I should at least see it till the end.”

— What now?! Are you really looking to get fired after just converting into a full-time reporter?!

“I’ll talk to you later. Goodbye.”

 Hey, hey! Hyun Sung-Beom…!

Hyun Sung-Beom turned his phone on silent mode and kept it away in his pocket.

Chae Bo-Ra was about to speak now.

“…First of all, it wasn’t my intention, and I’m extremely sorry for causing such public controversy. I am also deeply reflecting on myself for making the fans, who have been giving me all your love and support, worry so much.”

Chae Bo-Ra paused for a moment and placed a hand over her chest. She shut her eyes tightly, her face looking heartbroken.

“As all my fans and the reporters present here know, I had recently just encountered an unfortunate event. I was shocked after getting defamed for manipulating an assistant writer to delete the manuscript of a certain famous writer.”

What a joke. That’s all you too.’ Hyun Sung-Beom scowled, and he spat quietly inside while his fingers still kept typing diligently on his laptop. He was writing the article that he would be uploading shortly.

On the podium, Chae Bo-Ra dabbed the tears off her face and continued with much difficulty, “I needed some time off to console my exhausted body and mind. That’s why I rejected appearing on shows and was resting at home. My trip to Japan was a sort of healing trip for me as… Sob.”

Chae Bo-Ra could not continue on and let out a sniffled sigh. Her manager handed her a bottle of water and patted her shoulder.

“I have never met CEO Lee Dong-Myeong over work before. There were talks between the agency and Dongmyeong Networks with regards to the drama that I am in talks to be cast in, and that’s it. We don’t contact each other personally at all.”

Her words made Hyun Sung-Beom shake his head, and his mouth went agape in shock. He even wondered how anyone could come up with such a lie and be so confident and natural with it. It was extremely questionable how her outstanding acting skills would fail to appear in her acting projects.

“It was only during my healing trip that I found out CEO Lee was staying in the same hotel as I was. I thought it was a good opportunity to introduce myself, and then we also spent some time together by the pool. Thinking back, I made a mistake. I’m still a celebrity in the end. However, I thought nothing of it since my conscience is clear.” Chae Bo-Ra sobbed as she covered her mouth with both hands.

The reporters remained silent, and the hall turned solemn in turn. The only person who found the entire situation ridiculous was Hyun Sung-Beom.

“Those photos… It’s hard for me to explain them properly, but I can only say that the person who took those photos contained malice. I want to ask the reporter who shared those photos through the article. They must have taken many more photos, but why did they choose to upload those misleading photos?”

The reporters who knew Hyun Sung-Beom turned to look at him. A few reporters who were on Chae Bo-Ra’s side threw accusing gazes at him, but Hyun Sung-Beom didn’t care about them.

He let out a nonchalant yawn, indifferent about how others were looking at him now. His fingers typing away on the keyboard finally tapped on the period key of the keyboard.

– The email is sent. Upload it immediately.

Hyun Sung-Beom dropped a message to the maknae trainee reporter and closed his notebook. He had done everything he could. Now, all that was left was to see the results.

As Chae Bo-Ra finished saying her piece, her manager stepped forward. “We’ll be accepting questions now. However, we’d appreciate it if everyone could avoid any difficult or long questions, as Ms. Chae Bo-Ra is still unstable. I will also be answering any questions that I can answer on her behalf.”

Hands quickly shot up as soon as the manager opened questions to the floor. Hyun Sung-Beom, sitting at the back of the crowd, raised his hands as well. He raised his hand higher than anyone else, but the manager intentionally chose someone else.

“Sports Seonwoong, please go ahead.”

“When will Ms. Chae Bo-Ra officially return to TV shows?”

“Ms. Chae Bo-Ra’s recovery is of utmost importance and the highest priority. We’re trying to adjust her schedule so that she won’t take too long of a break to recover, considering that her fans are waiting for her return as well. Next question?”

The sea of reporters raised their hands once more. Hyun Sung-Beom raised both hands as if shouting mansae[1], but Chae Bo-Ra’s manager did not pick him this time either.

“There are rumors traveling in the broadcast industry that she was rejected at TV shows after getting on Writer Ha Jae-Gun’s bad side. Do you have anything to say about that?”

“We have answered that question a few times in other interviews. We won’t be answering this question. Next question?”

The question and answer segment continued. Hyun Sung-Beom kept raising his hand, but he still didn’t get picked. He wanted to yell and vent out the frustration that was building up, as only a few questions that were posed had touched the main point of the incident.

“We’ll be taking one last question from the floor. Are there any other reporters?”

Thankfully, only one reporter raised their hand in the crowd. And that was none other than Hyun Sung-Beom. Like a predator hunting its prey, Hyun Sung-Beom’s eyes shone.

Chae Bo-Ra’s manager regretted internally, wishing that he had ended the question and answer segment with that last reporter.

“Yes, please speak.”

“I have a question for Ms. Chae Bo-Ra instead of you, Manager.”

Chae Bo-Ra slowly looked up with teary eyes, seeing Hyun Sung-Beom standing tall in her line of sight.

“I am Reporter Hyun Hyun Sung-Beom from Weekly Trends.”

“…?!” The corners of Chae Bo-Ra’s mouth twitched visibly. The reporter posing his question was the very same person who broke the entire incident. What difficult question would he be asking this time? Her manager next to her was feeling relatively nervous as well.

“Before I ask the question, I would like to confirm something. You’re sure that you went to Japan to soothe your mind and body and that your meeting with CEO Lee Dong-Myeong was purely coincidental?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“And that’s also your first time meeting him in Japan?”

Chae Bo-Ra’s manager stepped up with the microphone in hand on behalf of Chae Bo-Ra. “Reporter, what is the point of your question?”

“As I’ve mentioned, I just wanted to verify those facts. Is this really your first time meeting CEO Lee Dong-Myeong in Fukuoka?”

Chae Bo-Ra’s cheeks and her venomous eyes were shaking visibly. However, Hyun Sung-Beom did not step down and confronted her.

“Yes, that’s right.” Chae Bo-Ra then said after as she took a battered breath, “I’m not sure why you’re making me repeat myself. Let me be clear with you. That was the first time I met CEO Lee Dong-Myeong. Are we good, reporter?”

Chae Bo-Ra was biting down on her teeth so tightly they were about to break. If Hyun Sung-Beon was next to her, she might have failed to stop herself from slapping him in the cheeks.

“What’s with all the fuss? Who is he?”

“Hyun Sung-Beom from Weekly Trends. He’s the one who released the most recent scoop.”

The surrounding reporters began murmuring among themselves. Just then, Hyun Sung-Beom picked up his phone and snickered. The breaking news that he had sent to be uploaded earlier filled his phone screen, and photos of the autumn night as their background were included in the article.

Huh? What’s this?”

“What? What’s that?”

The reporters started clamoring among themselves upon seeing the astonishing news.

What, why are they suddenly…?

Chae Bo-Ra squinted her eyes. Beside her, her manager noticed the unusual atmosphere in the room and pulled out his phone. His face immediately darkened.

T-This…?!’ Her manager was so shocked that he couldn’t control his facial expression.

They were photos of Lee Dong-Myeong and Chae Bo-Ra. The hotel was located at the end of a road decorated by yellow autumn foliage. The two people in question were seen in those photos linking arms affectionately after getting out of a car and heading toward the hotel.

Chae Bo-Ra, you…!’ Her manager stared intently at Chae Bo-Ra. However, Chae Bo-Ra was still unaware of the current situation and tilted her head side to side, perplexed.

The cameramen didn’t miss the moment and took the chance to spam their camera shutters.

Hyun Sung-Beom raised his phone and took a step out. “Ah, Ms. Chae Bo-Ra. There are more photos uploaded in the latest breaking news article. The mosaic effect was added, but it does seem to be CEO Lee Dong-Myeong, and the photos also seemed to have been taken last autumn as well.”

“…?!” Chae Bo-Ra realized it just then. Her legs began to tremble uncontrollably, and it was a good thing that the tablecloth was hiding her legs from the reporters. Her manager grabbed her to support her, but she couldn’t help clenching her fists tightly.

“You said it earlier, right? You met him for the first time in Japan. If so, what are those photos? Is he someone who looks extremely similar to CEO Lee but a totally different person? And what did both of you enter the hotel for?”

U-ugh….” A low groan escaped from her lips as the blood drained from her face. Her mind was completely empty; she couldn’t say a single word in her defense.

“Ms. Chae Bo-Ra, why are you so quiet? This press conference is held for you to clear your name from the defamation. Please give us an answer, Ms. Chae Bo-Ra.”

“Y-you…! As Ms. Chae Bo-Ra’s condition isn’t great today, we will be closing the press conference here!” Chae Bo-Ra’s manager gestured to the security guards behind him and quickly helped Chae Bo-Ra to the entrance.

Chae Bo-Ra’s eyes were unfocused as the guards dragged her away, and the sea of reporters swarmed the entourage with their cameras in hand.

I did it…!’ Hyun Sung-Beom clenched his fist tightly. Chae Bo-Ra’s ship was now sinking, and there was no way she could save herself from this scandal.

Bzzt!

“Yes, senior.”

— Where did you get those photos?

“Sorry, I can’t tell you that.”

— Come back to the office first. Let’s talk over dinner.

Cha Hyung-Jin hung up the phone first. Hyun Sung-Beom kept his phone away, wondering why Cha Hyung-Jin did not kick up a fuss. Cha Hyung-Jin sounded strangely calm rather than furious.

Anyway, I have no regrets.

Hyun Sung-Beom stretched his body as he stepped out of the now-empty press conference hall. He had written the article he wanted and had even got it posted. He had no regrets, even if he got fired after this.

***

– She’s so scary and dirty;;; Which means her helping the needy back then was all an act;;; This betrayal;;;;

– How could she do something like that with a man around her father’s age…. I still can’t believe it after everything was revealed.

– She can’t deny[2] it at all kekekekeke. Look at how flustered and pale Chae Bo-Ra and her manager turned at the breaking news. I burst out laughing while watching the livestream kekekekeke.

– This is just pure malice. I still believe in you, unni.

– Please, enough with the shielding already;;;; Are you a high-level anti?

– They say once you’ve seen one, you’d seen them all, and I really think that Chae Bo-Ra is the culprit of Ha Jae-Gun’s incident.

– Yeah, and it’s above 99% that she’s the culprit. Humans never change, they say.

The comments were all about Chae Bo-Ra. The public’s opinion of Chae Bo-Ra had plummeted to the abyss in just a day. The CEO of ICU Entertainment was pleading with the advertisers in front of a screen.

“No, director. I wasn’t aware of this as well. I’m the CEO of ICU Entertainment. Had I known about this, I wouldn’t have been watching all this time. What? Claim for damages? Director, please calm down and let’s talk calmly over dinner… Hello? Director? Hello? Ah, fuck!”

Slam!

He slammed the phone on the table. The department head retreated a few steps out of fear with hands.

“That darn—I was foolish for even caring for a girl like her just because she’s pretty…! Darn it, who can I blame?!” He bit a stick of cigarette and lit it. As he took a deep breath, the smoke he let out filled the office. His shoulders quivered as he smoked.

“It’s over now.”

He rubbed the cigarette on the ashtray and said, “I can stop Cho Cheol-Won from See&Good on my end, but that’s the best I can do. Not only Dongah Osaka, but even YoongJin Products also sent word that they’d be claiming for damages as well.”

“Which means…” He bit a second stick of cigarette in his mouth. He then let out a puff of white smoke as he stared into space. Eventually, he regained some of his composure and said, “It’s time to abandon that pawn.”

The department head closed his eyes and nodded.

He knew the CEO would say that.

“Let’s focus on Han Yu-Na and HyeprSoda, and try contacting Writer Ha Jae-Gun and AppleT’s Lee Chae-Rin.”

“Are you talking about the collaboration single album? I understand.” The department head was about to turn around when he cautiously asked, “Then… what shall we do about Chae Bo-Ra?”

“What else can we do with a pawn we’ve decided to abandon? Just leave her be.”

“Yes, sir.”

The department head removed Chae Bo-Ra from his speed dial list as he left the CEO’s office. Chae Bo-Ra’s contact details were replaced with Han Yu-Na’s contact details. The Internet was in chaos, but the corridor before him was extremely silent.

— I definitely told you to leave the apartment right away, didn’t I?

“Director…! Please, just give me a few more weeks’ time… Where else can I go now? I need to pack my stuff too—”

A firm voice from the other side of the line cut off Chae Bo-Ra’s desperate pleas.

— I have no thoughts of being considerate toward a dirty and crude woman. Leave my apartment immediately, and don’t ever think of taking my car with you. Leave it in the car park; just remove yourself from my apartment!

“Director, Director Cho…! Please…!”

Beep!

The phone call was cut off unilaterally by Cho Cheol-Won. Chae Bo-Ra buried her face in her hands. “What did I do wrong?! I was also doing my best, and things just turned out this way! This is unfair! Everyone else is trying to survive just like me, so why am I being picked on for trying to survive?!”

Chae Bo-Ra’s malicious voice pervaded the house.

Just then, she heard noises coming from the door of the house behind her. Someone was keying in the password to the door behind her. Were they from her agency?

Chae Bo-Ra’s face was contorted like a used tissue as she turned around to face the door.
