As of record in 2023 the estimated price of Mona Lisa paintings is equivalent to $1 Billion.

1. Salvator Mundi
$450.5 Millioin
Leonardo da Vinci’s painting ‘Salvator Mundi’ was sold for a record-breaking price of $450.3 million at an auction in 2017.
Allegedly, the buyer was a stand-in for the Saudi Arabian crown prince. The current location of the painting is unknown but was rumored to be stored on the crown prince’s yacht or in Switzerland.
The painting portrays Jesus Christ in an anachronistic blue Renaissance dress, holding a transparent crystal orb in his left hand and making the sign of the cross with his right hand.
2. Interchange
$300 Million
Willem de Kooning’s ‘Interchange’, an abstract expressionist oil painting, in 1955(measured 200.7 by 175.3 centimeters). The painting showcases a seated woman represented by a fleshy pink mass at its center.
The artist sold it for $4,000 in 1955, and the David Geffen Foundation later sold it to Kenneth C. Griffin for $300 million in September 2015.
It made the most expensive painting of that time. The Art Institute of Chicago currently has it on loan, and it ranks as the second most expensive painting, after Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi.
3. The Card Players

Paul Cézanne, a French Post-Impressionist painter, created a collection of oil paintings called ‘The Card Players’. He produced them during his last period in the early 1890s.
The Card Players consist of five different paintings that vary in size, number of players, and the environment in which the game is played. Cézanne made sketches and preparatory studies for it.
In 2011, someone from The Royal Family of Qatar bought one of the versions of the paintings for around $250 million, which people considered the highest price ever paid for a painting at that time.
4. When Will You Marry?

The artwork titled “When Will You Marry?” is an oil painting created in 1892 by the French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin.
The Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland held it on loan for about 50 years. Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani bought it from the family of Rudolf Staechelin for an estimated price of around US$210 million (£155 million), which is considered one of the highest amounts ever paid for a piece of artwork. The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen displayed the painting until 28 June 2015.
5. Number 17A
$200 Million
Number 17A is a drip painting that belongs to the genre of abstract expressionism. The renowned American artist Jackson Pollock created it. Hedge fund manager Kenneth C. bought the painting.
Griffin by David Geffen in September 2015 for $200 million. It was a record-breaking price for a work of art. The Art Institute of Chicago subsequently loaned it.
The painting was created by the artist a year after Pollock introduced his famous drip technique, where paint is splattered onto a horizontal surface.
Life magazine featured it in the August 1949 edition, which catapulted Pollock into fame. As of September 2022, it is the 5th most expensive painting ever sold.
6. Water Serpents
$183.5 Million
Gustav Klimt created ‘Water Serpents II’ in 1907. It is an oil painting depicting the sensuality of women’s bodies and same-sex relationships. It is the second in a series following Water Serpents I.
During World War II, the Nazis stole the artwork. Today, it is at the center of a controversy after the record-breaking sale in 2013. It’s worth noting that as of December 2019, the piece is the most expensive work by Klimt ever sold. Additionally, it currently holds the 6th position for the most expensive painting in the world.
7. No.6(violet,green and red)
$186 Million
No. 6 (Violet, Green, and Red) is a masterpiece of abstract expressionism by Mark Rothko in 1951.
The painting features an array of large, smooth blocks of color with soft borders and undefined shapes, a signature style that Rothko pioneered in his works from that era. After 2014, one of the most valuable pieces of art ever sold was the painting.
8. Pendant Portraits of Maerten Soolmen and Oojen Coppit
$180 Million
The paired full-length wedding portraits of ‘Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit’ are a set of remarkable artworks by Rembrandt. Commissioned to commemorate the couple’s marriage in 1634.
The paintings portray the two individuals in grandeur and elegance. The Rothschild family previously owned it, but later acquired jointly by the Louvre Museum and the Rijksmuseum in 2015.
Each museum provided half of the purchase price of €160 million, which set a new record for Rembrandt’s works.
9. Les Femmes d’Alger
$179 Million
Pablo Picasso created a remarkable series called Les Femmes d’Alger, which consists of fifteen paintings and multiple sketches. It was created between 1954 to 1955 and influenced by Eugène Delacroix’s 1834 work the Women of Algiers in their Apartment.
Picasso painted the series as a tribute to his admired artists. The entire Les Femmes d’Alger series was purchased by Victor and Sally Ganz from the Galerie Louise Leiris in Paris for $212,500 in June 1956.
The Ganz couple sold ten paintings from the series to the Saidenberg Gallery, while keeping versions “C,” “H,” “K,” “M,” and “O”. Numerous individual paintings from the collection are now part of distinguished public and private art collections.
10. The Standard Bearer
$198 Million
The Rijksmuseum, with the help of the Dutch state and Vereniging Rembrandt, purchased Rembrandt’s valuable self-portrait painting, The Standard Bearer, for 175 million euros in 2021.
The painting was previously part of Elie de Rothschild’s collection in Paris then after Rembrandt painted it during his move from Leiden to Amsterdam. He creates the paintings early on to demonstrate his ambition of creating a group portrait for the Amsterdam militia.
